At last, 2K Games has unleashed the debut trailer for 2K Marin's upcoming FPS relaunch of the XCOM franchise. Though the suburban, 1950s aesthetic smacks familiar of the underwater metropolis of BioShock, the extraterrestrial enemies you'll be tasked with eradicating look like no aliens you've ever had to fight off before. Okay, maybe if you're Spider-Man, you'll find yourself on familiar ground. Everyone else is screwed.
Check out the trailer after the jump, and imagine how unpleasant it must be to have one of these gelatinous, violent blobs force feed themselves to you. That cannot be delicious. Or sanitary.

I'm not impressed yet, I'd rather something more like the original which was pretty damn good.

Looks interesting.
I like the investigative touch, while I'm a bit skeptical on the enemy. Most likely people will be getting taken over by the ink and turned into enemies.
This > FO: NV from what I've seen anyway. Dunno why that's relevant, but it is godammit.

i didn't like the idea until i read the hands-on at IGN. i think the spirit of the original is still here, and i like the idea. it seems like its the skeleton of X-Com wraped up in the 60's with the videogamestandards of 2011.
We have a base, we have research and we have random missions with scripted progression. it's going to be different, but it's going to be neat.....

This being my first exposure the game, I'm actually pretty excited from this.

Gunplay reminds me of Bioshock, if they can pull off a story of similar caliber this has some great potential.
Also, the art style of the agents looks like it's leaning slightly towards TF2 cartoony, which doesn't seem appropriate for a game like this.

I think the art style is fantastic for a game like this. Just look at the vibrant culture of the 50s. There's all of these cartoon icons taking the world by storm, and while I didn't live in the time of the 50s, I'm sure the artistry impacted people's lifestyles in many ways. So why not base a game's art style on the cartoony culture they had back in the day? The game sure does look beautiful because of it.

I absolutely love this. I love the setting, the art style, the visuals, sound effects...it's all so good. This new game itself obviously takes a lot of inspiration from BioShock, I mean, just glance at the first-person views, but for me, that's a good thing! So far, this looks like a Day 1 purchase.

Not sure why this is an X-com game. It doesn't seem similar at all. Then again, I only played the first two, and not Apocalypse (but who played that one anyway?). When you take a somewhat well-known, older franchise, and relaunch it, my guess is that you're trying to play the nostalgia card to gamers familiar with the old series.
I don't know if it that works too well when the game doesn't resemble the old series at all. This really seems like it might be better as Bioshock 3. Nothing about the title Bioshock says you have to stay in an underwater city... Heck, watching that trailer, I saw more bio-shocking going on than I ever saw in Bioshock.
It could just be their choice of clips in the trailer. Maybe they'll release another one that shows the actual, you know, international agency that fights the aliens...the X-Com Unit.. And not just some local dudes with shotguns.

@sigma8 when was the last X com released? If anyone had any good ideas for a new RTS or if any developers thought it would sell they would have made a next gen X com by now. Maybe complain about that rather than 2k trying to update the game. Who knows, maybe there will be a sequel RTS. A game made this long after the original should be just accepted to not be like the original. Its the same reason people were hating on Fallout 3, when it was a really good game.

Don't know if you should be getting a notification but aren't about this reply...I just replied to myself and changed the @, since it's kinda broke.
The last well-regarded X-Com game came out in 1995. I don't know what you're trying to say exactly. Are you saying they couldn't come up with their own ideas so they used the X-Com franchise? Because I think the problem here is they DID in fact come up with a totally new ideas. This has nothing in common with X-Com. Except, generally speaking, aliens. They might as well have called it a Dead Space game.

So..it's Bioshock 3?
Animations are identical, engine is identical... it's just not underwater.
Not saying there's anything WRONG with that, just.. why would you use so many identical assets when making a game that's not even in the same series?
When the guy was holding the firebomb thing late in the trailer, i was expecting to see chain links tattooed on his wrist.

Not really. RDR and GTA4 both fall under the Rockstar umbrella while X-Com and Bioshock were originally different genres made by different companies.

I get the feeling if this came out 10 years ago it would have a X-Files branding instead of X-COM.

i think we will see a lot of different aliens in future trailers and i think this could be as good as the fallout-reboot.
i don't like the dark-blob enemies, but i'm shure there will be grays and a lot of great signature-creaturs from UFO: enemy unknown.

The original is a turn based squad combat game with research, manufacturing, and resource allocation. So no, not much in common here it seems. It's still too early to judge though. The series did have a shooter sequel, X-Com Enforcer that was terrible IMO as well as several sequels that stuck to the original formula.
The original is still one of my all time favs. You can pick it up for $5 on Steam i believe.

Not even close.
The original games were all top-down (birds-eye view) turn based strategy games. Basically you had an overworld map of Earth that you could build bases on and do research/build/upgrade things from those bases. Your various bases would then track aliens across the planet and when one was sighted you could send a ship to follow/attack them.
Once the ship had either been shot down, or had started an attack on a human colony or city, you could then start a mission. During a mission you would select each member of your team one at a time and move them around the map in search of the aliens. If you spotted one you could then choose to fire or use an equipped item. Items were all accuracy based and required a certain amount of energy to use.
The real fun though was just exploring random cities hoping you didn't get your read end blown off every time an alien popped into view (which happened A LOT). It was extremely tough to survive, but also extremely fun.

Most of the aliens were variations on standard designs.

Some of them got pretty wild looking though:
