At last, 2K Games has unleashed the debut trailer for 2K Marin's upcoming FPS relaunch of the XCOM franchise. Though the suburban, 1950s aesthetic smacks familiar of the underwater metropolis of BioShock, the extraterrestrial enemies you'll be tasked with eradicating look like no aliens you've ever had to fight off before. Okay, maybe if you're Spider-Man, you'll find yourself on familiar ground. Everyone else is screwed.
Check out the trailer after the jump, and imagine how unpleasant it must be to have one of these gelatinous, violent blobs force feed themselves to you. That cannot be delicious. Or sanitary.

Love the original (Enemy Unkown) and I have high hopes for this project. I am surprised by the setting, though. The alien threat manifested itself in the1990's according to the series as I know it. It seems strange to pull it all the way back to the fifties, but hey, it's their story to tell. The investigation angle is certainly interesting. I hope that they maintain the R&D and manufacturing component.
This is all wishful thinking on my part... I only have a PS3 (and Wii for full disclosure) but I hope this turns out great.

No, they actually looked like aliens (several different kinds).

looks well-made, but I don't see the appeal in fighting blobs

It looks like it could be a great game. I enjoyed that trailer. It's just not XCOM. I don't see the need of bringing back the name when you are changing everything that made XCOM great.

Take the X-COM name off of it and I might be interested. Terrible way to try and garner buyers by slandering one of the greatest turn based strategy games of all time's name.
So sick of all of these remakes/reboots/rehashes of great old IP's into FPS. WTF does that trailer have anything to do with X-COM? Black oil? What is this a terrible X-Files rip off?

@holo7
Your last line makes me wish they'd actually make an X-Files game with the Silent Hill/RE camera perspective and atmosphere.
Was wondering when someone would make an FPS in the Bioshock mold with greys and not some of the wacked out renditions that we've seen lately in games.
I haven't got any experience w/ the X-Com series so I can't get mad if this isn't faithful to it but we WILL be fighting something other than blobs won't we?

You would hope the blob enemys are just like first level only enemies because that could get boring pretty quick if thats the main enemy through out the game.

Seeing that the originals came out so long ago and aren't considered one of the bigger genres in this generation of machines, I can understand the thinking in rebooting the series. But even JJ Abrams managed to keep the enterprise in his flick...
I'm hoping this is a test the waters prelude to what they have instore for future releases. Or DLC to speed up releases.
First the venom alien simbiotes, next the sectoids and snakemen, big ass cyberdiscs and reapers, cameos from the crysallids and floaters , followed by mutons and ethereals. Of course, the people fighting are going to need upgrading as well. From suburbia Joe to government spooks to military and real xcom operatives. Or just get Will Smith's movie characters to do everything(I am legend, ID4,MIB)

I'm super excited for this. Like, this looks amazing.
I definitely understand why there's an air of disappointment for the X-Com fans, though. It probably isn't as simple as I'm making it seem, but it seems to me that they could have changed the name to anything else, and all of the negativity could have been avoided, 'cause, like I say, damn, this looks good. Has there even been any comment on how this ties into the universe? I haven't played the games -- did the first even have those weird black dudes?

I am a big fan of the XCOM series and I am glad they are bringing it back but I do not agree with the enemy character they are choosing on this trailer. The original xcom had all types of aliens including the greys, the snake aliens, the crystalids...(that is the one that would turn people into the living dead), and all other types. This enemy looks stupid. I know they can come up with something better than that. This is a slap in the face to all xcom fans. Come on black oil creatures...please....

So...you, um...so you're basically walking around shooting at black blobs of ink in the late 1950's. Okay, and this is supposed to be fun?
The visual style and atmosphere look amazing but I just don't see how emptying shells into blobs of black ink is supposed to translate to a good time.
I would bring up Ico as another game that dealt with black blobs but there's just no comparison. Ico was about strategy while this looks like Left 4 Dead with tar.

All of this "It looks like a bad XCOM game" stuff reminds me a ton of the early Fallout 3 backlash. This game looks fantastic. You've got DOSBox and your Enemy Unknown floppies. Go have fun with those and stop complaining about how your beloved franchise is tarnished forever and how you can totally tell from this 2 minute trailer that it's going to be EXACTLY like Bioshock. Thanks.

@DavidDDD This is nothing like the update done to Fallout. Fallout 3 was a 3D RPG with a ton of carryover from the Fallout franchise. It took the guise of a first person shooter, but if you actually tried to play it like a FPS you were missing out on the idea.
From this trailer, there is absolutely no link to the previous games. The shooting all looks spastic and imprecise. and the idea of playing a single unit isn't appealing. The setting is also just about the worst thing I could think of.

I'm not sure how 2K managed to screw this up so badly.
They have a property that many put on their greatest games of all time list, and rather than build on that they decide to make what looks like a very generic, very mediocre first person shooter? The only link this has to X-Com is that aliens are involved.
Make the original X-Com in beautiful 3D and you've got an instant hit.
I can tell you already that this game is going to be a failure, both financially and critically.

Who knows maybe 2k will be smart and listen to its customers or maybe they will tell us to f*&@ ourselves.

You completley missed the point of the Fallout 3 comparison. I was talking about the whole "overly protective fanbase with super-glued-on rose colored glasses" thing, not comparing the respective faithfulness of the two games. Also, if you can tell how precise the shooting is from a context-less 2 minute trailer, then you, sir, are a magician. Most people need to PLAY games to figure that shit out; not you, bro.

Take notes 2k.... imagine if you would have followed the original game x com UFO defense by microprose and just added new characters to the existing ones and then increase the technological graphics on the game including all the maps and terrain, weapons etc... That would have been an automatic hit. But instead you decide to go with the trend of FPS shooters. The reason X com was successful in the beginning was because it was different. I have been waiting since 1996 for a new game to follow x com UFO defense but nothing has emerged like it besides the other games of x com which are not as great. I really hope you listen to many of these comments that many of us have to say because in the end we are the ones that buy your games.

2k listen to this... Another great idea would be to release this game but release one as a collectors edition with the original x com UFO defense in HD with graphic enhancements and some other goodies pertaining to the history of x com. I would definitely pay 100 dollars for this collectors edition. What does everyone think about this idea?

Shooting black blobs will get boring very quickly. It seems like an excuse to be lazy about enemy design, unless they make some interesting blob-mutated people.

I'm making a note here, Epic Fail
I had been holding out some hope for the new X-com even after I heard it was going to be an FPS.
But that just looks gawd awful, I realize there is probably a lot of work they need to do...... but as far as I'm concerned unless this game comes with a 15lb solid gold bar ..... I'm not going near it with a 10ft pole. That is unless it goes one sale at Steam for like $2

This is X-COM by name only.
Different time period; Different aliens; Different gameplay. They should've given this game a different name to go along with everything else that is different about it.
Still looks interesting though. I'm just disappointed it's not the X-COM I know and love.
