Assassin's Creed creative director Patrice Desilets leaves Ubisoft
31
Patrice Désilets, who is credited as creative director on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, both Assassin's Creed titles and a handful of other Ubisoft Montreal projects, has left the company for a "creative break from the industry," Ubisoft confirmed yesterday. The publisher explained to Game Informer that Désilets' role as creative lead on Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is "essentially done," and that he's no longer involved with the completion of the game.
The factors which contributed to Désilets' departure are still largely unknown. We'll try to find answers when we get some facetime with Ubisoft later this week at E3.

Apple has now ruined the term 'facetime' for me. I can't help but think of the iPhone 4.

This is such BS. He had such a big voice for the Assassin's Creed franchise, and he created some bloody fantastic games. This really has me worried for AC III, but yeah, as long as we still have Jade Raymond, we should be alright. She had a huge part in the AC franchise. But what realy worries me is that she'll be too busy with I Am Alive and Beyond Good and Evil 2.

They just released ACII last November, and they've been releasing DLC ever since. Now they're going to release a whole new game near the holidays. Less than a year to create a new game in the franchise is a short time, and it brings AC in line with the release schedule of the Call of Duty franchise if they keep it up.

I wonder if the decision to start churning new AC games out at breakneck speed had anything to do with his departure. Not that I can complain or anything; I loves me some AC.

Not to get too deep into tech nerdery but I think they did it because they intended it to be an open standard and 'iChat' simply sounded too Apple-esque. So they played off QuickTime and made FaceTime.
Regardless, it's become a stupid ass marketing buzzword which now whenever I see 'facetime' as a phrase will remind me of the iPhone. I guess in that sense it does it's job.
Anyway, I hope AC3 doesn't suffer for this news, but as a student of Art I can understand feeling burnt out creatively and sometimes you just need to take a break and find new things that excite you. It can be hard to appreciate how much dedication people put into creating worlds like this that feel truly authentic.

And that's the end of Assassin's Creed as good game franchise. To quote the renowned philosopher J.C. Denton: "What a shame."

Releasing DLC ever since? You make it sound like it's a bad thing. The last time Ubisoft released DLC for Assassin's Creed II was four months ago and with the coming of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, I doubt Ubisoft will release more DLC. Assassin's Creed II was great and the DLC was a welcoming addition to an already very lengthy game that was worth every penny of its price. I think Ubisoft knows what they're doing because the Assassin's Creed universe can potentially be huge and expansive and they have a unique, continuous story to tell (unlike the Call of Duty series), so I think it's one of the rare video game series that can warrant for a release every year as long as the same great quality that was found in ACII will be passed down to future AC titles.

The DLC is likely just some left over content. As far as I know there are only two DLC packs and each of them are only an hour of gameplay give or take. The AC team can pump out a full game in a year easily, have you seen how massive the staff is? I still don't consider any of that to be breakneck speed.

Just cause one man leaves [even if it's someone like a creative director] doesn't mean the series will bomb...unless it pulls a AC1 on us. THEN we're screwed.

Man deserves some downtime, hopefully he took it for the right reasons. Taking a "break from the industry" usually says more about creative burnout than any specific issues at one company.
Successful or not, the thought of working on the same franchise for a decade must be a tiring prospect.
