Epic Games' Jerry O'Flaherty, art director for the original Gears of War title and once-reported director of the upcoming Thundercats film reboot, recently put together a unique pitch for a film tentatively titled Samurai. Well, okay, the film itself doesn't look too terribly unique (it's like 300, but with more wakizashi), but the fact that almost all of its backgrounds and special effects were created using the Unreal Engine sets it apart from most modern cinematic projects.
O'Flaherty explains in the pitch's description that it was created "with the intent of sharing all of the environment assets ... between the movie and the game." Seeing as how the pitch was shot with zero budget in two days, this simple proof of concept (posted after the jump) could lead to an even greater influx of cost-efficient video game-to-short film adaptations. Hey, don't give us that look! Those can be pretty good on occasion.

I hate texture popping so much. I might be one of the few to think this, but I feel that they should just spend the extra 2 seconds to load all the textures first. There's nothing more distracting than texture popping and with the amount of loading that already needs to go on, the addition of 2 seconds would go unnoticed. On paper it looks bad with the concept of 2 seconds can add up with the amount of gaming we all do, but in practice, no one is really going to notice and for me at least, the experience of gaming would be much more enjoyable.

I think those visuals would get annoying after 90 minutes.
Also, you missed a short film, Joystiq.

Heh, complete with NIN. Very "inspired" by the 300 Trailers, but as a proof of concept (as mentioned), kinda cool. Though if the project gets off the ground, I'd advise some more time working on the light in the green screen shots =P

Less gaijin white people, more actual true to history japanese samurai. I'm still bitter about The Last Samurai being a soulless white male. Nothing against caucasians, but it's annoying when they dominate roles and historical significance in films and other media.

I wouldn't mind an Unreal movie. Whole series is about shooting stuff, it could transition well.

it's a proof of concept, to the naysayers belly-aching about the white people in it. They did it with practically no budget and it's basically a glorified storyboard. The same thing was done with 300, just to get the gist of what the movie would look like, not a finished product by any means. Get a life people, or at least wait til your nuts drop before you start opening your ignorant mouths.
