Update 2: Major Nelson confirms it: Project Natal is now officially called Kinect.
Update: Oops! It looks like USA Today jumped the gun on the announcement and has since pulled the piece from its site. Stay tuned for Microsoft's official unveiling later.
We've got either good or bad news depending on how you felt about the rumored name change for Microsoft's motion-sensing Project Natal. The new brand "Kinect" has just been confirmed by USA Today. The story, which includes no pricing or timing info, seems to have been slated to run tomorrow, though we imagine it might have been rushed out when the name started circulating after appearing in an Italian ad.
There's even a list of games!
[Huge thanks to Jake for the heads up.]

Who cares about the name when they still haven't shown anything but casual games?

I like the name Kinect better than Natal for sure.
kinetic motion fits the description of the product quite well. Sony already took Move so that one was gone.

Kinect is a stupid name, it sounds like someone with a bad english accent trying to say "connect".
For the record, 4 years on and I still think the name Revolution is 10 times better than Wii.

Hmm, don't really know how to work that into a joke, so I'll just leave that there.

"Kinect" is the name, huh? Well, I guess it matches the Microsoft enabled phone "Kin". Interesting.

I thought Microsoft's "World Premier" Natal event was supposed to be tonight? Other sites say it's on Tuesday.
And why in the hell would USA Today leak this information?

Really Microsoft, Kinect? Really? Come on, I know you are wanting to show off the KIN, but this just doesn't work, at all. Even Natal is a better name, though not by much!
I mean come on Microsoft! Even Sony's Move name is better, not great, but at least it makes sense & actually applies to the concept.
No one is "Kinect"ing with this, there's no controller! What is this, are you going to do away with the Dashboard in favor of the KIN OS next? Is this your grand strategy, try to merge your gaming and mobile platforms into one? You have already started with the Zune Marketplace, are you going to try to make all the devices work with each other, have them all use that KIN timeline application you advertise somehow?
I hope the Kinect works, and works well, but you really needed to put some more thought into the name. I usually don't care about names, but this has so many scary things it can lead to that I have to be bothered by it!

Clever play on words, but I feel like I'd have a hard time using the name in passing conversation (I just know I'll be calling it "connect").
At this point whenever I see the peripheral, I see it as Natal. Might as well have stuck with that.

I heard it first, so I didnt know its spelled with a clever reference to kinetics. It sounded like a name of a public transportation system, as in "You can take Kingston's Kinect tram to the stadium to catch the game."
