@(Unverified) It makes perfect sense, really. Considering Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and other forgotten Disney characters populating the land, it's understandable that Mickey might be reverted to the prankster he was in the 1920s silent cartoons.

I like this preview, and I understand what you're saying. BUT, you're basically saying nothing...essentially: "it COULD be great...or it COULD suck...it's KINDA innovative...but KINDA not..."

He's saying what he's seeing now isn't spectacular, but it hints at a greater potential. Not exactly the same as saying nothing.

I'm a bit disappointed they opted not to go with voice actors. I mean it really isn't a make or break decision but it does cause the game to loose a few points.

Looks over all like its going to be an awesome game.

I would say that Spector and company set the expectations too high by releasing the concept art too early. The concept art was jaw dropping, light the imagination on fire stuff. Re-invent everything you think you know about a Disney game. The screenshots coming out of E3 are none of those things.

Yes, it's concept art and the game never looks the same. But when that's how a game gets introduced to people, you've set them up to be disappointed in your eventual final work.

I'd take his word over yours. No need to be nasty about it.

Maybe it looks bad in motion (though in Nintendo's case, motion has looked way better than screenshots), but I think the game looks nice. I could not have cared less about this game until what I read/saw at the conference yesterday. I'm getting strong Okami vibes from this one. Digging the art style and the meta use of drawing/erasing as combat. This seems like a much more clever use of Disney property than Kingdon Hearts.

Kingdon Hearts where you play as Don King would make a great JRPG though.

The Wii's graphics may not live up to the game's potential, but the developer doesn't really have a choice because that's where the potential audience is. Epic Mickey could look gorgeous on the 360 or PS3, but hard-core gamers would dismiss it for being "kiddy" and the game would collect dust on store shelves.

@erh Judging from the reaction Epic Mickey got from "hardcore gamers" when it was revealed, I don't think it would do too badly on the 360 or PS3.

In fact, I'd go as far as saying that we'll definitely see a Move version of this eventually.

Hence why I wrote "...and I understand what you're saying."

The "greater potential" that u speak of was squandered by making it a Wii exclusive game. The darker motif of the game would've drawn in more hard-core gamers on Xbox 360 and PS3 and being a Mickey game would've drawn in more younger/casual gamers. Not turning this into a fanboy conversation, but seriously...graphics-wise, the Wii is an Epic-Fail.

Yeah, this new comment system is as busted as the old one. The replies to replies, which are supposed to work, in reality do not work at all. They always get thrown to the bottom of the comments.

@ Ezio:
You can never judge the reaction of blog posters for how well a game will do.

Case in point: No More Heroes. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions quickly dropped off the top 30 weekly Japanese software charts.

It's debut week (April 12-18):
http://kotaku.com/5523209/mario-still-tops-japans-game-charts-travis-touchdown-never-had-a-chance
16k on the PS3 version, and 15k on the 360 version. Overall, that was a pretty slow week in Japan, so it manages to break the top 10 for both releases.

It's second week (April 19-25):
http://kotaku.com/5527402/japan-loves-nier
The PS3 version drops to #29, and the 360 version is out of the top 30. Neither version is listed the third week.

Combined, Heroes' Paradise may have sold about 40k units total. The Wii version sold about 40k in Japan, and about 480k worldwide.

NMH is what could be considered a "core" game, a "mature" game, but is niche in design. It wouldn't have had massive success anywhere, but the Wii version still managed to be Suda51's best-selling original title (Grasshopper Manufacture has also done licensed work, like the PS2 Samurai Champloo game).
Even so, many "hardcore gamerz" claimed the HD port would greatly outsell the Wii version. Whereas both versions have only managed to sell about as well as the original, before disappearing entirely from record.

Epic Mickey would do as well (or worse) on PS3/360 than it would on Wii.

The concept art depicted a shocking take on Disney with stuff like the machine/cartoon hybrids and other things that I didn't think Disney would let people do with their characters, and it was awesome.

In the E3 demo I saw nothing of the sort and while the gameplay seemed ok I was thoroughly disappointed that the concept was pretty much abandoned.

Robot Goofy's still in taking into account the robot Donald from the Gameinformer stuff last fall. Plus the machine mashups will probably be seen in more of the action/dungeon levels, considering the Hades faced thing in the Small World level in Gameinformer, plus Teacup crabs and whatever the machine is going to turn Hook into.

The Wii is actually capable of producing better looking games than all of the previous gen consoles. Unfortunately, you can only see evidence of that in a couple of titles.

I really do wish this game was coming to xbox or ps3...its just not enough to make me buy a Wii.

Goldeneye, on the other hand........

The Wii isn't the limiting factor here. The developers just need to add in some graphical tweaks, so it looks more like a cartoon and less like a typical platformer.

Think about how Okami had that paintery effect throughout. I get the feeling that this game should have something similar or at least some variation of cellshading.

Exactly. Okami and the new Zelda are all examples of games with great art filters. Epic Mickey should be looking there.

BRING THIS TO THE PS3 . I have a wii, I promise I do, but I just really think that this mechanic could work very well with the playstation move. please, Playstation gamers are generally more willing to try out games that seem strange and unordinary like this (for instance Flower). Oh well. I'll just pick it up for wii when it comes out :P

The paint idea made me think a lot of Okami and makes me want to see Okamiden more. Where is it at E3?

Either way, knowing there'll probably be no more Mario platformers on Wii, this looks promising. Liking the retro 2D section they showed at Nintendo Keynote as well.

It's better than the Gamecube which was the most powerful last gen, so it is very dissapointing to see most wii games incapable of at least surpassing Twilight Princess or Pikmin 2 when the power is obviously there.

I'm not one of those gamers who whines about graphics... I watched Epic Mickey demoed at the DIS booth today and the previewer is correct: the low-resolution screenshots effectively hide the fact that antialiasing is not enabled, resulting in highly pixelated graphics.

Personally, I wasn't particularly excited by the gameplay. If you've played games like the Gex series, you've played this before. I did enjoy though the demoer's comment that you can solve conflicts with nonviolent means (e.g., summoning a TV set that turns enemies into couch potatoes.)

I think you just touched on the aspect of the Wii that dissapoints me most. Don't get me wrong, I love my Wii (not an innuendo), but I really get tired of the half-baked efforts that most developers put out for it. In fact, I think that this is where the Wii gets its reputation for being an underwhelming console. During the Gamecube days, third parties may have not put out as great of games as Nintendo did, but the graphical quality of most of these games approached the graphical quality of Nintendo's games. Now, it feels like many third party developers don't even begin to utilize the Wii's capabilities. Anyway, this rant wasn't really directed at Epic Mickey. I actually have high hopes for that game.
