Quick fact: I've been a gamer since 1996 and have never played Madden.

Is this strange?

Looks like I might have to buy my first copy of Madden ever. I played many of them but with the stick controlling the spins and stuff it would seem that the controls are much more simple and not all over the place.

Wait, I thought Joystiq didn't have people that played sports games? Yet this article sounded like it came from someone who was actually a Madden regular.

Glad to hear the gameplay hasn't changed to much. After years of craptitude on the next gen systems they finally re-did it and got it almost perfect in 010.

For the game flow system thingy, is that optional? I'd really prefer to just pick my own plays. Being able to sort them (1st and 10 plays, short yardage plays, 2-minute drill plays, etc) as I see fit would be much more helpful in speeding up the play selection process than some AI generated list would.

I actually am the guy on staff who buys Madden every year. It's just as surprising to my coworkers as it is to you, believe me. :D

Haha I wish I could answer your questions but that's not my department >.>

All I can tell you is that yes, Madden NFL 11 will be worth the price of admission.

@Vcize Unless I am missing the point of your question, I think I can point you to documentation that may help. I believe you can customize a game plan, and use those plays to narrow down the play list.

Dave, any word on if we can skip the whole game flow thing and just call our plays normally?

There's nothing wrong with playing Madden, its just the idea that EA doesn't really change much year to year, and people rush out to buy it in droves is what's wrong to me. If you have friends that also play madden, its an extremely competitive game that you can play for hours on end.

I had been a loyal Madden player since 1995, I owned 00, 03, 05, and 07. After I got 2010, I decided I'd just rest on that for a few years until they institute another major change.

@216 You got lucky, 2010 was the major change. 2009 was horrible, 2010 may be the best Madden I've played.

@Shadow Hog: People have different tastes, and as surprising to you as it may be, Madden is a deep and competitive game. Throw out the nonsense like micro-blitzing and rocket passes, and it's very fluid and skill based.

I am meh'd with Madden this year because of the lack of updates to Franchise mode / Online franchise. It gives me pretty much no reason to buy the game. Madden '10 was a great step forward in the series, and it sounds like Madden '11 will be tweaking that formula, while introducing a couple new changes (ultimately, changes that feel a little superficial to me), but with the development team committed to focusing on Franchise, SUperStar, and Online Franchise for Madden '12 (so said the dev blog from this past week), I'll hold off on Madden '11 this year.

Really looking forward to NCAA Football '11 this year, though, and will buy it in July.

Whatever. No qualms with this write-up really, but every year the game is marginally at best improved and reviewers say "it's not just a slapped together version of last year with small tweaks like the year before."
Yet they said the same thing about that year before version when it was new...

After the rush of playing with updated teams and stats wear off, it'll be the same old Madden.

I'm excited for this year's Madden and I can't wait to play the actual game. I already have plans on getting a couple of games in Aug (Mafia, K&L2) and if Maddens turns out to be good, then I'll get it too.

"The feel of the game was very familiar. The controller layout was largely the same and nothing much has changed from a presentation standpoint, save for some minor control updates"

Big shock there! :V

@vcize So the comment system is still screwy... apparently. Yeah, I was on the fence about the whole game flow thing, but the fact that I can narrow down the plays to those that I would run in that situation is immensely helpful. I can never remember where anything is in the heat of the moment. You play on PS3 or 360?

The immediate problem I noticed (having been to Gillette Stadium a few times) is the angle of the sun. The open end of the stadium faces North-Northwest. At no time during the year or day would the sun be pouring in from there. Just saying.

Most of the people that say Madden doesn't change from year to year are people who don't play it. I buy it religously pretty much every year and the only iteration I was letdown with was the first time it went on next gen consoles (the first 360 version was awful) and the one that introduced the vision cones for QB's (could have been the same one I don't remember). Last years Madden was amazing. They just need to get rid of the exploits that plague the game every year. Last year it was the WR screen spammed to death and when you took your DE outside they would audilble to an outside handoff. It likes any online games I guess where people prefer to exploit instead of playing simulation style football. However, last years Madden was the best football game I've ever played. Still want to play backbreaker but I can't play a football game that isn't NFL teams.
