It's guranteed to SUCK, IMHO. They should have just made an amazing tactical strategy game, that's the reason the IP has meaning, the story is as generic as they come but when transitioning genres that's all that is retained.

@Spunky Monkey 190906 Don't know about anyone else, but I'm pretty pissed I can't play the original X-COM right now! I guess I'll have to wait until I get home from work. Hope the urge to play is still with me then.

This preview is filled to the brim with good news. I'm definitely excited for this game now that I know they're bringing back some of the elements that made the originals great.

Good. I loved the original XCOM and I think its gameplay holds up to this day. I guess I would have liked a bit more of Fallout 3's mechanics to make its way into this game, so far as a real-time/turn-based hybrid goes, but this preview at least sounds promising.

Finally a FPS that's not some macho military game. I'm still unsure about the blob enemies though...

I don't mind them taking a completely different approach to the game, as long as it maintains the same atmosphere of the original and is fun to play.

Sounds like this might be a welcome surprise despite being a FPS.

The game must do the following to bring in the fans of the originals and new players:

- Deep research as seen in the first 2 games
- Manufacturing of what you've researched
- base construction
- ability to how you are impacting the invasion, one of my favorite parts of the original X-Com was how different countries would perceive you based on effectiveness in their territory, and how that would affect your monthly revenue

Basically they need to update everything about the game, and the only thing I would find acceptable to change wholesale would be the combat mechanic. Back in the day the only effective way to have the player vs. alien battles play out was turn based. It made sense in the context of the game, and, machines back then wouldn't have been able to handle much more competently. So, I guess I'm saying I can deal with the shift to FPS combat, but, if they leave anything else behind I'll be pissed.

@Sh1fty

The combat engine for valkyria chronicles would have made for an excellent X-com game. It combines the best of real time 3rd person running and gunning with classic turn based tactical combat.

This game is a missed opportunity for greatness.

This is a big relief, I played all of them. Even that crappy FPS from the 90s where you're some sort of XCOM cyborg hunting aliens and the one where you're tooling around in a space fighter. It sounds like they are really aiming to keep the feel and tension just going with an updated style of game play.

I can even imagine this as a trilogy. Start in the 50s, update to "modern" era with contemporary technology for part 2, and the future in part 3. The base building would be missed but if you can do upgrades and stuff ( as implied by some of what was seen in this walk through) I think it should be okay.

Now that does not sound that bad anymore. If they can remove all the leftovers from BioShock we saw in the trailer... Who knows? It might really be a real X-Com shooter.

Wow, an underground base and they named an object "Elerium!" That makes it an XCom game for sure! F 2K for trying to capitalize on our nostalgia.

You know, I think this game looks great. But this, like that new Fron Mission game, tread on sacred ground; it doesn't bother me at all that this is a FPS, or that Front Mission will be an action game, but I totally understand why it would turn old fans off quick. I have one word to describe just how I understand this mindset:

Shadowrun.

I don't know how the game will play. I'm certainly a fan of the originals. I'll be cautiously optimistic.

But to me, the vibe I'm getting off the screenshots reminds me of an old Amiga game, "It Came from the Desert." It's the whole 50s thing, I guess. ICFTD was a great parody of "Them!" and other monster flicks from the era. I'd like to get a bit of that sort of kick while I'm playing this.

If you watch some of the trailers, it certainly does look like it adheres quite well to the original game. However, I hope they don't keep it so that you have to walk to the various locations in your base. I find that just makes it tedious.

I'm more than willing to give this thing a chance, but perhaps calling it something other than X-Com will relieve some of the pressure that it's facing and give the dev team more time to have fun with the game itself rather than waste their efforts trying to placate fans of the original series. You can't remake X-Com successfully. The best you can hope for is giving us something that's similar to X-Com and captures as much of the spirit as possible.

Now THIS sounds more like it.. I'm still leery, but my several of my fears have been banished. Why did you make such a weird trailer, 2K?
