Kid Icarus Uprising trailer unfortunately isn't in 3D
39
Here's the unfair thing about the Kid Icarus Uprising trailer that we've posted after the break -- we got to see it running on a 3DS (in 3D) just yesterday, so we're pretty bored with all these silly two dimensional videos running on our computers. Sure, the game looks purty and features some pretty massive environments (especially considering it's a portable game), but it's not exactly running in brain-melting 3D. Oh, and if the model for Pit looks familiar, that's probably because it's nearly identical to his appearance in 2008's Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In case you were wondering, that's a good thing, folks.

This game looks like a sin and punishment type of game. Could be great!

Yeah, I thought it was for Wii, too, but I was wondering about the increased aliasing compared to other Wii games when watching the trailer... Then I realized it was for 3DS, and I was surprised by the graphics (even though Iwata had just been talking about the 3DS, haha).

I'm actually more impressed by the graphical power of the 3DS:
From Joystiq:
"Next up: A Resident Evil Revelations demo featuring old pals Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine and, of course, a zombie. Like MGS, this was a scripted demo, though you could pan around using the analog nub, and the face buttons to zoom in and out. Visuals looked more Resident Evil 5 than Resident Evil 4 – the characters and textures looked really sharp on the small screen."
According to Kotaku that demo was all in-game cinematics! WTF man...Nintendo really has a winner on it's hands.

@aristokrat So in the original you could be turned into an eggplant? I wasn't allowed to have video games when I was little...

To bad all 3D is going to be lost in advertising. No one will be able to see this stuff in 3D unless theres actually demo units displaying every single 3DS game that will ever come out, at all retailers.
just kinda sucks you cant just "youtube" videos anymore and know: "Sweet! So THIS is what the game will look like!?"

It's like night and day. Also, this is from the Naked Sample demo:

Even in the tech-demo phase, the 3DS is just as, if not not more, powerful than the PSP.

Are you serious? Take another look at some screenshots from FF4 DS and say that again.
I'm pretty sure it's at least slightly better than the best PSP games ("the best", for all intents and purposes, being God of War: Chains of Olympus and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker), but that's a little bit harder to say.

Man, when that video showed up in my YouTube subscriptions, I was so excited to get to see the 3DS in 3D. Boy, was I disappointed.

i saw that video yesterday and using a pair of 3D glasses that i snagged from some 3D movie i saw a few months ago, i tried every possible playback mode- but none of them worked? do you need different glasses, or to adjust the refresh rate? i like the idea of 3D youtube- i just wish i knew how to make it work.

Would it hurt Nintendo to apply anti-aliasing to anything??!?!?!? C'mon Nintendo its really simple.

@Darkside8103 It actually isn't really simple. AA is one of the biggest performance kills out there. Not that I wouldn't really love to see it happen, but it's not quite as easy as that. Though with newly in development hardware...would have been nice to put that much extra juice in.

Oh snap, now my reply just seems ineffectual and redundant.

The screen's native resolution is actually 800x480, which really isn't too terrible, especially considering the size. The vertical resolution is effectively halved when in 3D mode (and the horizontal is too, to create an image for each eye), which is why Nintendo is saying the screen is 800x240.
And yes, as you said, the game is naturally antialiased with the 3D effect, but to what extent, we don't know quite yet (since we have yet to experience the screen in person).

@lunarlasso; Yes. There's a slider control to the right of the 3D screen that controls the 3D effect or turns it off entirely.

That video is pretty low quality :/
It looks much better in this trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7detDcmMKY

The voice over and soundtrack all lend itself to feeling like a cheesy mid 90's anime. As long as that's what they are shooting for, then I'm cool with it. Otherwise get some decent VO staff fer chirssake.
