Preview: GoldenEye 007 (multiplayer)
57
Let's clear one thing up: This GoldenEye Wii game is not your GoldenEye N64 game all prettied up. This is an original game based on the same Bond ... movie (though featuring the Daniel Craig Bond). That's not to say that the new GoldenEye 007 doesn't borrow -- what it legally can -- from Rare's classic console FPS, but be careful about expecting a modern port of the 1997 game known simply and lovingly as "Bond." (That project is still not happening.)
At Nintendo's E3 booth, I played a quick round of two-player split-screen multiplayer of this new GoldenEye, and it left a positive impression. I could have sworn my opponent and I had faced off in a classic Bond map (the Archives, I thought), but Activision insists this is an "original" level, in so much as it is not a recreation of one of Rare's maps from the N64 game. Of course, Rare's maps were based on sets from the movie, and Activision has the rights to have maps designed from these same sets. So, expect to get a sense of déjà vu when playing the new Goldeneye.
My first "aha, this is a new game" moment happened when I pressed up against a railing and was prompted to "vault" over it onto the floor below. Wait -- you can jump now? Not quite.
The new GoldenEye uses a context-sensitive "action" button, which doubles as a sprint ability when there's no environmental object to interact with. While there's no "free jumping," developer Eurocom has added special abilities. In the demo (which was set up with Classic Controller Pros), I controlled Oddjob, the Bond villain henchman with a lethal, bladed-brim bowler hat; my special move being a one-hit-kills hatshot. (My opponent, as Jaws, could toss a handful of grenades as his one, not-nearly-as-cool trick.)
It was a quick match, and in the end my hat proved deadlier than the 'nades. How to sum up such a brief demo? Simply: I want to play more. The new GoldenEye 007 is a fast-paced, technically-sound shooter that could bring back the glory days of split-screen Bond -- if only I can lure my old friends over to play. (The game will also have 8-player online multiplayer with XP progression and unlockables.) If you're bummed that this game isn't a true Bond port, don't be -- unless you buy it thinking it is.

When ever I see the word "preview" in the title, I always believe that there would be a video, but there never is. Why?!?

Maybe it's called a 'pre-view' because you don't get to view it yet? :)

people will still be tricked by the name and wonder why this isn't the same game.
but I believe if they are using the original as a close template it should be really good

Based on this preview, it sounds like the devs should've taken a different direction with this game, and by different direction, I mean they should have given a bigger nod to the original GoldenEye. To me, it sounds like they're using this as just a brand, and this should be giving that nostalgic feeling to the gamers that played it years ago. But who knows, I could be completely wrong. Time will tell...

@Shadowbender - They couldn't use the original game more than they did; It's caught up in a lot of legal red tape (see the article linked in the story). They could be sued if any part of their game was lifted directly from the old game.
Having said all of that, my excitement for the game just went next to zero. It's not the Goldeneye movie that made Goldeneye the game great, nor is it the characters, or any of those trappings; It was the gameplay, which was revolutionary at the time (extremely dated by our standards today). I thought that this game was going to be an HD port of the old game with some additions, and hearing that it's not that at all has made me indifferent about the game. If it turns out to be great, that is excellent. If it doesn't, I won't be hurt.

So pretty much they turned it into MW with bond models?

I'm very optimistic. They are reimagining the original story without any of the extra levels Rare made up. So its still based on the same storyline. They've announced support for Wii Classic Controllers and Gamecube Controllers for those who prefer dual-analog, ditching friend codes and adding in an XP/Unlockables system, they are pretty much doing everything right so far, it remains to be seen if the final execution will be what it should be.

Where did it say they were ditching Friend Codes? The article just says it has 8P online with exp/unlocks.

@DarXider - It was really the first multiplayer FPS on a console that didn't completely suck. It also had excellent multiplayer levels, and a large array of weaponry at your disposal, which made the replayability very high.
Me and my friends played the Egyptian level over and over with either just Golden Guns, just Rocket Launchers, or just Moonraker lasers. One of us was always Baron Samedi (sp), and someone else was Oddjob (justly named as "the douche" thereafter). Many fun times were had.
Goldeneye was also the very last game my father (who had gamed with me since Mario Brothers 3) was able to play. He's tried other things since (Halo, COD, etc) but he just can't do it. Ahhh memories (of lazering him in the face from across a map).

I would like it, but.. .5 Multiplayer maps? Really? A little lazy there, eh, Activision? Oh wait... DLC.
And Oddjob... Ugh, bitter memories.

Umm, I doubt there will be any DLC for this game, it so hard to implement DLC on the Wii that virtually nobody does it. The system Nintendo setup just doesn't support it. The only game I have heard of that did it was Square-Enix's My Life as a King. The Conduit couldn't even be patched for the rampant modding that went on in it, nor were there any downloadable maps.
If this game only has 5 maps, then expect that is where it may stay through the duration of it's lifecycle. I was never interested in the game, I loved GoldenEye back on the N64. But with Activision remaking it, no thanks. It will lose it's soul that made GoldenEye what it was back in the day.

This is very weird that Activision is doing this... Considering it was Rare that made the first game, that Nintendo published... Where did Activision come in? I was hoping that since Rare is now with Microsoft, the original would get a release on XBLA, or at least the new version would be on Xbox. D:

a heaping lots of nostalgia. but to be fair it on a platform that is more lacking on the FPS side than the xbox or the PS3.
what i hope is that the mission objective format is kept with difficulty curve increasing what you have to do. time trails of course for cheat codes. and lastly my favorite. context sensitive shooting reaction. meaning i shoot his hand he starts cradling it. best part of the old golden eye was shoot one hand shoot other hand shoot hat off his head and then go for the mercy headshot

The same thing that keeps you going to bed with your girlfriend instead of cheating on her with the hot new girl at work that wants to do the dirty with you - Affection for it. I can go back and play the original EverQuest and feel the MMO crave - but even "Better" newer prettier games can't keep me entertained past the first session. You just build a relationship with something and nothing pops your cherry the same.

So then isn't that a good thing that this isn't the same old Goldeneye? I don't think I want to pay full price for a game that's An HD port of an old, outdated game.

@teteroto Christ. While I admit those graphics could be significantly better, even for the Wii (Resident Evil 4 on GameCube still looks prettier than a significant number of Wii games), to say it looks worse than the N64 makes it clear you've not actually played an N64 game anytime recently. I mean, compare that third screenshot to the original level - http://few4th.files.wordpress.com/2007/10/goldeneye.jpg

I never played the first. Nevertheless, I'm confounded by the preemptive love and adoration people are heaping upon it. From what I understand, it was a product of its time: the gameplay and the multiplayer were revolutionary-esque at the time, but when compared to today's games, they are ancient. What I'm trying to say is that, from an outsider's perspective, the new game is GoldenEye in name only; it will have lost that which had made the original special, which in turn can attributed to nostalgia.
tl;dr The excitement for this game is artificial.

It's like being excited for an alien shooter FPS named Halo that's only got the same characters as the original game, but everything else is different.
It could be a great game, but it's not Halo and it's not Goldeneye 007 for the N64.
I don't think most people realize that yet. I didn't even realize it until I read this preview. The way it was announced (and, more importantly, the way it was leaked) I thought it was going to be a remake at first.

I'll agree that it's GoldenEye In Name Only. They keep saying this GE is different from the N64 one, but you KNOW they wouldn't have made this new GE game if the N64 one hadn't been one of the most loved shooters of all time. They're obviously trying to milk our love of GE without actually clearing the redtape to get the rights to the original game.

i'm very excited for this title - it gives me a reason to sell my N64, and keep my Wii.
but i'm a little afraid of encountering the same feeling of nostalgia mixed with antiquated gameplay. we saw this with Metal Gear: The Twin Snakes for the GameCube - great game, but compared to MGS: Snake Eater for PS2 which came out shortly after, it simply wouldn't get the same shelf-life.

All of my interest in this has gone now that it's clarified to not actually be a remake. My Nintendo 64 still works perfectly, and GoldenEye is still a staple whenever friends are over ... heck, I even purchased rechargeable AAA batteries for the sole purpose of powering four rumble packs for life. The original isn't going anywhere anytime soon for me, shame on them for this cash-in.
