Can you still sit on a couch and play games using Kinect?

@floating coffins - A lot of outlets are reporting that Kinect isn't capable of it yet. The tech is there, but the API's aren't.

Whether this is true or not; I have no idea.

My intuition is that the difficulty in sitting down while using Kinect depends on how the device itself is used. I'm guessing you can use the IR 3D ranging, the optical camera, or both in a given software implementation. If you're sitting down your knees and legs will be at a different Z plane than your torso and arms, and the body proportions will be all wrong because the upper leg is perpendicular to the IR camera and thus obscured from it (although it could be construed from the Z difference between knees and torso). This wouldn't be an issue if using just the optical camera since it doesn't really depend on Z-depth.

But this is just my guess from similar technology presentations I've seen.

@floating coffins In the demo showing off Kinect from the first night before the Microsoft E3 briefing (later shown on MTV), they showed an entire family sitting on the couch while playing a driving game.

Another question... how does it handle amputees and people with deformations?

"It looks for any shapes that appear to be a human body (a head, torso, and two legs and arms), and then starts calculating things like how those arms and legs are moving, where they can move (your arms probably can't fold backwards at the elbow, for example), and where they'll be in a few microseconds."
If some one doesn't have a standard human shape, to what extent will Kinect recognize them? Also, in theory, Kinect could be programmed to distinguish other distinct objects or even pets.

Does that mean amputees won't be recognised? :

After seeing all the demos of people playing the Kinect games standing up, I want to know if you can play some of them sitting down. Obviously you can't with the ones that require the lower half of your body, but what about games like Joy Ride?

@Mouthsmasher I would IMAGINE that you could, that's a good point. This thing has a lot more potential than what was shown at E3 - I think it's all up to the developers and what they see in this.

For instance - what happened to scanning objects in, or using the controller in conjunction with movement? I'd like to know if there are any top secret projects behind the scenes, or if MS is waiting for more developers to jump on that feel dedicated enough to code a game around these other mechanics.

well, with the racing games didn't show them using their feet or legs for anything, so I'm sure it just tracks your arm movements. So I don't see why you couldn't sit down and play them.

Ya I really think the gaming industry has more creative talent than what was shown at e3. NONE of microsofts games convinced me, but I still believe kinect has buckets of potential. I can't to see what devs come up with in the next few years.

@Mouthsmasher; Yeah, there HAS to be some great ideas out there for Kinect. Despite the fact that most Wii games end up as shovelware, there are still some golden gems out there. Kinect's story can't end up any worse.

@Mike DPad

yeah ive been wondering that too
as a programmer, when i started, i was really excited to see what i could do with even controller vibration. and then avatars came in and that was cool, but ive used xna for a lot of random little things for my computer science class.

i was wondering, the voice recognition done in end war, is that actually currently available for xna, except i guess endwar used their own audio library too.

it'll be really cool to see if microsoft extends the kinect api to indie developers, if not for games, at least for proof of concept things with NUI. especially if they include a preset library of voice recognition commands or common guestures.

@Hynad That is with the chip the developed. Microsoft did away with the processor in the camera and is instead using the 360 to process it, which would allow for more than two. Provided the programmer making a game codes for it.

@Hynad Remember the family with their limbs flailing about before E3? All of them were captured on screen and in-game. It's a very good thing then that MS found a way beyond that natural limit.

@Hynad I saw your last reply from the link in my email, it showed your reply right below my comment, but not when going to the article itself. Interesting. Anyway, you're right about the 2 players in the limbs flailing video :-\ I guess I was going off the "Kinect Adventures supports 4 players" type of thing... maybe that just means it can recognize 4 players but only 2 can jump in at a time? *shrug*

Wow this really limits the kind of games you can do in 4-player. The more people you want on-screen, the more processing power required of the Xbox. That could be quite bad news for awesome high-tech games. :(

@Hynad Exactly .. All of the demos only showed 2 people playing.. Removing the chip made it _worse_ not better..

All of the calculations are offloaded to the 360 cpu rather than a specific chip in the camera, so all of that has to be processed by the 360 and it would also have to do the game processing, which would make the whole thing a lot worse not better.

Saying that though, the way primetech have worded it indicates that this wouldnt work without the chip, so kinect probably has their chip..

How does Dance Central work with the two backup dancers if it can only process two people at once? I thought Natal/Kinect was supposed to be for up to four players?

If it only fully supports two players, I think I'm through embracing Kinect.

@Dance Love Pop

Yeah, I looked up the Parade video, and it does only have two people on the screen. I was surprised, I was sure I saw the kids on it...

The Dance Central game doesn't render the dancers based on Kinect info, as far as I know. The images on screen are for you to mirror, so maybe that's easier for it.

I don't know about Cirque because I haven't seen the video. Is that shown anywhere? Not that I really doubt they would advertise 4 players and only be able to do 2, but it would be nice to be sure.

@Robborboy Just shows you how brilliant Microsoft are at advertising seriously they could sell sand to arabs..

The "Show" with cirque du soliel was completely staged.. None of it was real, they want to imprint an image of family "FUN" into your brain, so they hire a group of famous acrobats to do the job, whatever else it implies is also there to make you rush out and buy the thing..

Yet, all the live demos (not the staged ones) were only using 2 players.

I would like to have actual proof that the camera can really work with more than 2 persons.

Here's what I found in a few seconds. Dated June 15, 2010. ^_-

Personally, I miss the old commenting system and never had an issue with it. I also liked how people massively upranked had more than just 3 hearts but their entire comment had a colored background behind it.

Dance Central only works with one person at a time. More people can dance along for fun but the game is only watching one. And the on screen dancers are not following the player's movement. They do the moves perfectly and you're scored on how well you match them. But if say you did the wrong move, the onscreen dancers would still do the right one but the game would let you know you screwed up.

I think I'll wait for the generation after this. It's definitely a great tech, and it will be phenomenal in 5 years. As for now, it's just a cheap gadget (not price wise) to get attention from people.
