That's African-American magic... we must be sensitive to our darker-skinned brethren.

I'm glad companies like Microsoft are going through proper channels this time around for new products *glares at Activision, Sony, Mad Katz and Red Octane*

Wow, I always just assumed it was IR time of flight. From the description, it sounds like it's actually an IR structured light setup: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Structured_light

I can't wait to get one of these and see how they did it. It seems the third lens is not just a simple IR led, but some kind of IR projector.

@nrp

Yeah that's why the thing is so big, it has a projector jammed in there. They've been using "coded light" for a long time in academia, computer vision research and stuff, but there hasn't been anything with this kind of performance before.

"Unfortunately, company reps weren't able to comment on specifics of the licensing deal"

you're right, offloading the processing to the x360 and only identifying 2 people does make it seem like it can't do as much as some people would want. if you look at this from a business perspective though, it makes perfect sense. they extend the life of their current console by 5 years and introduce a new gaming mechanic that gets people hooked. eventually, consumers will say, i wish we could have all 4 people in our family dancing in dance central and the game recognize it.

next xbox console announced 2015 - chip can identify 8 people in view, can identify more joints and subtle movements more accurately, and even identify finger joints and movements to do specific actions in games.

That's where I see this going.

First thing I can think of... imagine picking a lock while actually using your hands in splinter cell! or imagine picking up and throwing a coke can in that game to distract guards, while you pull a magazine out of your belt and reload your gun!

this isn't as accurate now as the ps3 people want, but kinect is just the small bait. wait til the next console generation and the improvements on kinect. microsoft will be undisputed king of immersive gaming.

btw, i'm not a huge microsoft fan, although i do own a x360, I'm just imagining the future possibilities of this technology, probably the same way the developers of this technology felt 2-3 years ago when envisioning kinect.

Israeli tech companies have been producing some amazing things over the last decade or so..

From the sounds of it though, this will be in loads of devices within a few years probably even built directly into tvs to control the tv with your hands..

There are times you cant find the tv remote and want to quickly flick through channels. Actually this could become a good selling point for new tvs.

just a quick look at Microsoft's Xbox website http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/z/zumbafitness/
1-4 players... even co-op and look at the online stats...

@Cueil But is that 4 players at one time or teams of 2 taking turns? All the screenshots only show one or two people being watched by Kinect.

I would have liked to hear how it will recognize facial expressions, like Molyneux insists it can.

Under the 'Multiplayer Fun' section, it only says two player support, so I think it's probably only taking turns...

I'm just really happy for the interface part to be honest. I remember watching gamer and thinking " wow this looks pretty awesome". And now its already here ha. Just going to be able to move through the dashboard with your hands. Pretty pumped for that aspect.
