This actually kind of reminds me of Six Flags.

No, hold on, don't go yet.

Mr Six's Dance Party, typically 6PM at most parks. Basically you have a fifteen or twenty minute list of snippets of popular dance songs, and a cast member dancing it up and inviting audience members to come play along.

Can't dance? No judgment, this is a theme park, have fun and part of having fun is participating. However, I do think that as stated above this has a good chance of increasing people's confidence. For geeks (most of us), that's a really important thing.

I wonder if that lady ever uttered the phrase "you can dance if you want to" to the folks watching the demo then laughed when she thought about the song.

@Hexa : And yet it will be the talk of the town once it's released. Kinect has the wow factor working for it so expect to see Kinect and this dancing game EVERYWHERE!!!

It'll pop up on Jimmy Fallon (again), Good Morning America, the Today Show, The View, upcoming movies, just everywhere. But I think what's sad is that the hard core market will suffer because all the big publishers will stop making hard core games and try to jump into the trillion dollar motion control bandwagon.

I think we should cherish Black Ops, Ghost Recon, Killzone 3, Gears 3 because come next E3 we'll see more motion based control games and something tells me that Kinect will be the runaway hit leaving Sony and Nintendo in its wake.

And it pains me to say this because I've been knocking Kinect since day one and feel that Move is a lot better. But, the inevitable reality is that Kinect will probably have just enough "hey, that's cool" features to make it an instant hit.

Kevin Butler may be right about hard core games on Kinect but it won't matter when everyone's fawning all over Dance Central.

@Hexa

This is not meant to start a flame war, it's a legitimate question.

Why about this game couldn't be done on the PS3 using an PSeye? Maybe I'm missing something? It just seems like it's using body tracking, the same thing the PSeye can do? I don't really see anything beyond that basic body tracking.

@Pre: Kinect can, in theory, track motion more accurately than a standard camera because it gets infra-red depth data or something - dramatically simplifies the image processing. For example, say your hand is a similar colour to your shirt, it should be a lot easier to pick out specific hand motions because it doesn't have to distinguish from the background colour the same way.

Also in theory, it should probably be possible to do something similar without the depth data. Just harder work for the processor, and the risk that it'll be less reliable.

(So basically - 'Move' should be more reliable than Kinect because it has those big easy-to-spot light-up thingies, but Kinect should be more reliable than PS Eye when trying to track full body movement.)

The game looks pretty good - this is for sure much better control than Wiimote for dancing, though I'm not really sure it will get the same kind of 'flow' that you can get from a DDR arrow-pad. (You know, like how if you're good at DDR, you can play some song you never played before, on a hard level, and smoothly play through it reading the arrows as they come up - no need for memorisation. It's a great feeling.) The little pose pictures are fine, but compared to four coloured arrows, they're a lot harder to read in a hurry.

One other disadvantage over DDR is that you can't improvise; in DDR you can do what you like as long as you hit the arrows, so on a moderate level, you know, if you feel like clapping you can, or if you want to do a spin you can, or whatever.

Overall though it definitely looks pretty awesome. (And probably better than Konami's offering, which seemed like to get beyond easy level you'd have to memorise the moves for sure.)

I don't think I'll be getting 360 + Kinect for this one game (yeah there are other 360 games I could probably get, but obviously nothing that's made me buy one thus far, and I don't have that much space) but if I already had a 360 and it was only the accessory and game, I'd certainly be picking it up.

i could definitely see myself playing this, but i don't want to dance to crap. i got no problem against dance music, but i don't want to dance to the song in this video, or lady gaga, or whatever.

a mix of some DLC with house, some hip-hop......hell, just release the whole soundtrack to beat street and put in a mode where you do a breakdancing routine against your friends. i'd throw down for that.

@(Unverified) But I don't want to dance to crap, either and that's what hip-hop is to me.

My point is, I'm sure Harmonix will have some music from every genre. No need to show your youth by actively hating on a kind of music (which I just did too, I admit it). Hip-hop will probably be represented in the game.

In previous Hatmonix games, by the way, I've always ended up liking songs I'd never choose to listen to on my own. That's half the fun of those games.

how does me saying that i don't want to dance to TWO songs translate to actively hating on an entire type of music? in fact i even said "i have no problem again dance music." did you even read my comment? and showing my youth? i asked for DLC from a movie made in 1984 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086946/). i sure am a youngin'!!

No, shooting from the hip. Mad man? Maybe but what part gives you that impression?

If it's about hard core games going away I think I make a rather valid point. What used to be an exclusive novelty only for Nintendo, motion control is now a chief component of all three major consoles. Sony's approaching this rather gingerly but Microsoft's betting you'll use Kinect so much they invented a new dashboard for it. If that doesn't scream "go away hard core gamers" I don't know what does.

Even with a choice it divides the console in half to cater to a specific audience. In a way that's pretty ingenious but it could also mean developers shoving Kinect-ivity into their games to get you away from the "old" interface and into the new motion-control-friendly interface. Don't be surprised if you start seeing ads show up on this dashboard too. Surprise, surprise but Microsoft's intention is to make money and the Kinect dashboard is a perfect a vehicle for revenue generating ads.

And like everything else made by Microsoft all 360 owners will name their first born after it and call it the second coming of videogames.

Thanks but no thanks.

Probably the *only* thing so far that justifies Kinect's existence as a platform. Rather then doing a bullshit, custom fitting of games that worked perfectly fine on a controller, they found a game you *couldn't* do on a controller and used Kinect to do it. Whether it's good or not is irrelevant. They put it to use in a way no one else is, so I give them a shit load of credit.

Dude, the one and only time I played Just Dance, I was sitting in a chair and mimicked the motions with one arm and got like 75% completion. So no, Just Dance, is not a good dance simulator because you can cheat like hell or conversely you could be really dancing your ass off and still "miss" due to the wonkiness of the wii sensors. How are you going to cheat your way through Dance Central? The simple fact that it can track your whole body is a game changer in the dance game genre.

Yea, because Just Dance is a great simulation of dancing and a phenomenal game, not a cheap cash in to appeal to the casual crowd who has no concept of what a quality video game is, and since it was such a great simulation the creation of Dance Central is redundant and unnecessary, much like every other Kinect game out there.

Ass hole...

I like DDR because it's a video game, because it isn't pretending to be a dance simulator. I have come to the realization that, for this and other reasons, I am not the target audience for this game, and will not comment on it further, beyond this one expression of distaste.

That does segue into another idea I just thought of how to say: I find it...obnoxious that the culture of music appreciation (particularly modern music, both Rock and Electronic) is so wrapped up in "party culture," for the most part. I love music. Like, a lot, and consider myself a relatively discerning listener; I hate parties/clubs/concerts though, much preferring to listen to it by myself at my computer or in my car.

Again, it's not that I think there's anything inherently wrong with appreciating music in some kind of party environment, or with other people in general. I don't appreciate it that way, because listening is a very personal experience for me, an outlet for the emotions I feel it inappropriate to express when others are present. I just sometimes feel like I'm alone in that =/

Maybe it's odd, feeling alone in reference to a solitary activity - slightly contradictory, maybe. But it does feel like it would be less lonely if I knew other people felt the same.

Anyway, just some thoughts swirling around in my head. If you read, thanks for your time.

I'm no dancer at all, but this game has been getting such good word that I am definitely intrigued. Plus, it's from Harmonix, who have proven themselves (to me at least) to be the masters of music games. If the Kinect isn't ridiculously pricey, I'd consider it for this game alone (plus the cool gesture controls for the 360 interface).
