You didn't demand that he gets Megaman Legends 3 made. Every Inafune interview must have at least one MML3 question.

I also appreciate that he decided to keep the save system in. There are some games that are better for autosaving, but the save system in Dead Rising is part of the atmosphere.

You have 3 days and limited time to accomplish the goals set forth in the game. You can cycle your character and restart with enhanced skills if you like. I know today games are competing for your time, and if you don't have time to dedicate to Dead Rising you probly shouldn't try and play it.

Wow, at least to me this interview say a ton about east/west differences. They were trying to make Frank "unattractive"? I thought that they achieved the opposite.

By the time I got a 360, the many criticisms of Dead Rising led me away from the game. I'm very surprised to see Inafune so proudly stubborn about not changing things for the sequel. Now I'm thinking of skipping this one as well, because I hate when fun in games is constantly roadblocked by responsibility.

@MLS You're missing out on a great game. Once you get used to the save system and the fact that it's timed you grow to love it.

@MLS Good. I'm glad they're not pandering to your casual crowd.

Dead Rising is one of my favorite games. I actually managed to beat it on my first play, but it took many, many attempts to take out the first couple bosses and learn the game. Everything in this interview is good news for real gamers who like a challenge.

Oh please. Judging by your login name, it's likely that I've been playing video games longer than you've even been alive. I've bought and finished Mega Man 9/10, and all of the Bit.Trip games. So spare me the elitist rhetoric and labeling just because I don't like what I've read about some game you enjoy.

@MLS To be honest I dont think this interview did much at all to HELP sell the game. Not that I'm upset at the thought that western characters might not be considered "beautiful" (lets face it we all know even japan's oldest and ugliest characters have a disturbing amount of beauty compared to ours). It's more like he's saying if you liked the first game you'll like the second because we havent really done much to change it. It's just more of the same.

I loved Dead Rising... I loved the structure that required I do things in a certain order to have a chance of succeeding. I liked the stress of it all, the need to plan out where the best save point was at, and the act of saving was a very measured thing. This made the game feel much more like a horror title and less of an Action one.

That being said I would have loved after beating the game to have a "Faffing around" mode... The unlimited mode that existed didn't fit this because of the health decreasing thing... and not able to save thing.

Keep your proper game structure and force people to beat the game to get it... but give us a playground once that's done. Normal saves, normal health, normal respawns... Heck have all maniacs available the entire time...

To me it's the biggest flaw in an otherwise brilliant game, give us the playground after the serious story and it's the best game ever.

Agreed.
Dead Rising is what made me buy an Xbox, and I loved it. However there was no way to go right back in and just find ways to kill zombies.

I loved the first game, but it was a shock to discover that one missed appointment closes off the story, even though you can still survive the remaining 72 hrs. Once over that initial shock, I have to admit I think I replayed that game more than any other this generation, just for that one reason. I can deal with that and the same save system again since they are adding more than one save file.

Dead Rising is either a 'love it' or 'hate it' game, and this one looks to follow the same format. I was sold on the first one when I fried a zombies face off with a frying pan in the demo

"We wanted to make a more rough, tough, gritty character for the Western market..."

someone at Square should be taking notes.

@carg0 Square tried with Neir and everyone HATED the western designed character. The problem with all this East/West rivalry is that no one understands that a decent looking character is a decent character no matter where you are. There's no reason to make a character "uglier" for a certain market as long as you dont "over beautify" regularly in the other.

I'm not any more likely to buy a character rippling with muscle than I am a character that isnt as long as the character is well designed and the game is fun!

I honestly think part of the appeal of DR 1 was figuring out just what to do. I felt rewarded even when I failed because I never lost XP and just kept getting stronger and killing the zombies is just as fun today as it was then.

I've never understood that sentiment that it was "impossible to win" the first runthrough of Dead Rising. I didn't hear anything like this back in 2006, but lately I've heard newcomers talking about having to "grind" levels and such.

Did anyone really have that much of a problem killing zombies at all the first time around? I beat it without any problem in my first go, even got the real ending... No one I knew had any trouble, either. In fact, I'm one of those people who rather liked the old save system. Really, how often do you die in Dead Rising? Not very if you actually kept food with you.

It really wasn't that hard of a game, certainly not one you had to grind in at all.

@Colonel Falafel

I think you are probably the one person who beat the game on their first try without restarting. The game simply wasn't designed to be beaten that way - although it wasn't designed not to be beaten that way either.

See, I thought this, but then I asked every friend I know who played it. The consensus? The only really hard part is the last fight, and even then a double lariat cheaply wins it...

Dammit I just want to know if you can unlock Frank, or what about the co-op? Is Player 2 Frank? I want Frank in some form!

Last I heard, in co-op, Player 2 will just be a clone of Player 1, with no narrative acknowledgment.

"We haven't necessarily custom tailored [Dead Rising 2] to be an easier experience for those who haven't played the series before. It is what it is, that's one of the core mechanics of Dead Rising. You're going to have to learn it while playing like you would any other core mechanic in any other game the first time you play it."

I'm sorry, but statements like this make me lose faith in the Japanese approach to gameplay mechanics, at least from an American perspective.

It's seems harsh to essentially say, "You don't like it? Get used to it!" If you find your user base complaining about something, it's your job to fix it.

And I have trouble buying that the majority of players really liked the save system of the first game. Everyone I knew tolerated it at best.

@Funkoid It's not an eastern specific mentality, it's a lazy mentality. Depending on how much you liked the first game it's simply "if it anit broke, dont fix it." They took the first game and made it again.

Loved the first game. It's one of the few early 360 games I still own. But it had its share of problems. Saving, Having to play through multiple times, Having to look online for help, OTIIIIIIIIISSSS! I'm glad to hear they are fixing some of them, but disappointed they are not trying to change it up more. What made this game fun was the over the top gameplay, humor, and just killing zombies everywhere with everything. It seems like the rigid save system and mission structure that is timing you is in direct contrast to those ideals. Oh well, I'll still play the heck out of it!! Next time don't be afraid to change things up a little! As long as theres lots of zombies, humor, and weapons it will always be Dead Rising to me.

I really enjoyed the first Dead Rising. The difficulty, weapons, bosses, tone, and saving was all perfect. Otis was kind of annoying, but I eventually learned to ignore him. I don't really have any complaints about the first one, and I hope the second one will be just as good.
