Cool idea but no. I don't find this game interesting at all. Why they're making another one is besides me.

Game looks good, but that possession idea is terrible.
It reminds me of the terminator 3 car chase.

I think it could make for a pretty exciting game, being able to jump around you'd never have a dull moment. But about that story behind it, yea, sounds kind of lame. I also don't think that it really fits the feel of the classic Driver games anyway.

The only real problem I see with the Shift concept is that at some point all the chases will devolve into "how many on coming cars can I crash into the target."

@Clint Eastwood

What a coincidence. "Shifting" into people's cars with my crowbar while I'm in San Francisco is my forte.

HE'S IN A COMA.

But this is a good idea. (The jumping, not the spoiling of the storyline.)

@Tre That's the deal breaker right there. The thing that creates the entire gameplay experience... IS ALL A DAMN DREAM.

Despite actually improving the driving over previous games in the series, they have, in one poorly worded sentence, reduced the game to a BARGAIN BIN TITLE before it even hit the shelves!

Throw in the fact that you can't dream in a coma.

Was anyone else here way more impressed with the size of the map than this goofy shifting ability?

graphics look a little dated, the shift idea is weird, but it could be cool. But man that's a big map.

Wow! The city is huge! I like how the city is thriving and alive around you with police chases going on.

And calm down people. This shift idea is neat and should be a lot of fun. They had to find a way to set themselves aside from all the other sandbox games and this sounds like a fun and unique way of achieving that goal. Games are supposed to be fun, not just make sense.

Maybe I read you wrong, but the point I was making is; The dude is in a coma, the only possible ending for the game is:

"woah, that was a crazy dream I had, and you were there, and you were there..."

Neurological inconsistency aside, the story is rendered meaningless by basically telling us how it's all going to end.

I don't get the story line at all. So he is in a coma right, so he isn't out at all doing any of these things, it's a dream? Then whats the point.

Shift feature? I can only see this making the game to easy, every time I'm in a chase and I spin out my car, I don't have to do all the work of catching up again, I just switch.

I like the original Driver on the PS1, I was a bad guy and happy.

@Mentality whats the difference if he is in a coma or if its real life, its still just video game... its all about how the game actually plays, the concept of him being in a coma doesnt make the game play less relevant.

It means dude wakes up at the end of the game and nothing you did has any effect on the over all story line. none of the crooks you busted are actually busted. It's the complete opposite of accomplishment!

Ever see that Nick Cage movie "Next"? watch that pile of shit and then you'll understand.

@Mentality my point was its the same crap at the end of every game.. everything u accomplished is part of the game, when he wakes up the game is over.

just because ur in a coma doesnt mean the game is pointless. it just means the game takes place in your mind, ur accomplishments are still just as valid if the game took place outside ur mind.

Because, earlier in the game he was in an accident that put him into a coma? Well then what is the purpose of everything that you are doing in the game if it to no real incentive because it's not real anyway?

It detracts from anything that you was supposed to be working towards before it happens, and although yes, you have all these new features and "powers" (which makes me wonder how we are expected to belive Turner doesn't realise it's not real because he is now like a super hero who can shift from vehicle to vehicle.) it makes the game false from what it has ever been in the past, becasuse it goes from gritty action cop game, to fantasy.

They should really rename this Driver: Car Whisperer.

Seriously, what a joke they've made out of this franchise....

I wish I could edit my previous post, the grammer is poor, but it makes sense anyhow, you know what I mean.

Don't get me wrong here btw, it does look "interesting" but if they where ever going to reclaim this franchise, they have really messed it up and took away any credability. Because it's just no longer believable. Although I went off this game after Driv3r, that was just poor.

@PolishMountainMan Yea, what's with all the Driver hate? Yea, the series went downhill after the first one, and Driv3r was nicley over hyped .

I know the Driver series was supposed to be all about realism, and the "body jumping cause it's all in his head" sort of ruins that, but that mechanic pretty much fixes the single gameplay issue thats plagued the entire "mission-based-driving-game" genre since it's inception: You make one mistake and you are SCREWED and have to start the entire mission over. Checkpoints helped alleviate that a bit, but still, you have to do the entire checkpoint flawlessly, or hope the developers put in enough checkpoints for you. One other mechanic recently is the rewind found in Grid and Dirt 2 which helps correct mistakes too.

I'm really looking forward to this, because at least they are trying to do something new with the game. I know being a ghost and becoming someone else isnt new (Geist, Prototype, Stubbs the Zombie), but I think this can save the series. (Plus the Deloran?! YES)

If you want realism, go get GT5.

Shift is a cool idea, but doesn't it seem like it'll make the game too easy?

Also, does this get the award for the most uses of "classic" in a three-minute video? It's like they're begging us to forget about the last few...
