Looks like that head start that Microsoft had with the 360 really worked pretty well. Kinda wish the DS, PSP and GBA were in there too. Oh, and the NES and SNES just for giggles

LOLLLLLLL so true.

also, "Of course, the PS2 has had a spectacularly long lifespan after that, with Sony announcing 7.2 million units sold just last year."

....To Sony's detriment more so than Nintendo's for sure.

The craziest part is, 50 years from now people will be talking about Wii before they bring up NES. That's how insanely popular and successful it has become.

I doubt Wii will top PS2 overall sales. Nintendo will kill it off as soon as they're next system launches like they always do.

I agree. With HD becoming a standard, I don't think the Wii will outsell the PS2.

In my opionion, I'd be surpised if the Wii actually sold 100 mill by the next cycles of consoles. Time will tell, I guess.

HD was a standard when Wii released, but that didn't stop it.

Though i'll agree in that i don't think it'll breach 100 million.

Let get one thing straight though, with inflation the wii is practically half the price the PS2 was. people were screaming for price drops almost as much as they were for the PS3. The wii has NEVER been disliked for it's price and being half the price of either of it's competitors almost guaranteed more sales from the get go. Add to that the sales from people who just want to hack it for free games or homebrew and it's ease compared to the PS2 (which required a lot more hardware hacking due to Sony's numerous hardware revisions) and it's understandable that it look like it might out do the PS2, in the long run though it just doesnt have the legs.

I think the best part about this story is that Nintendo had a separate conference just for analysts to show them all the graphs and figures that they want to know, keeping the press conference as the media spectacle that they have become.

Great to see them end their streak in style.

I would disagree. 2012 at the absolute latest, likely holidays 2011. Nintendo's going to want to try what they're doing with 3DS now with their next console, that is to say to get so much momentum that they'll co-opt their opponents before they even have a chance to move.

The wii probably sells just as well in over all numbers. Not even close for the percentage of titles per system but shear numbers probably make the wii just as profitable as the other 2. or more since its cheaper to develop for.

This only shows that should have balance with your system.. powerful console and quality games.. not just with the hardware or just with the games.

With Wii, you get both, just at their game lineup... they are both quality games even if it is not high on graphics and effects. What is important is that the gamer will have a engaging experience with the game and connect to the character with the use of the console. :)

That's probably what MS is trying to do with their intro of Kinect.

Nintendo got their wish they created the gaming console that attracts non-gamers and makes them play games. However besides their main line up of first party games the library of games for the system has very little focus.

"So Final Fantasy and Castlevania were kiddie games? That's news to me. Resident Evil 4 was a kiddie game? You don't know what you're talking about. "

So NINTENDO made those games?
You don't know what you're talking about.

While not aiming directly at children, Nintendo themselves has always aimed at families. Family-friendly games. Games that were awesome to everyone back then, now considered "uncool" and "kiddy" to the "grown-up" youth. ...odd considering that parents still enjoy those games.

Nintendo's consoles have always maintained a sense of family-friendliness. 3rd party companies are encouraged to put whatever the heck they wanted in there, but were far more encouraged by the more """hardcore""" demographics in the other consoles. Heck, during the NintendoVSSega years, Sega was considered more "hardcore" -- though we never really used those words.
I mean heck, when I had a SNES and a Genesis, guess what were my two top-played solo games on both consoles? For the Genesis, it was Vectorman... for SNES, it was... Mario Paint.
Yeah, pretty much spells it out for you.

For Playstation, the top games I played were RPGs like Suikoden II, for N64 it was family friendly games like Mario Kart, for Sega Dreamcast it was mostly fighting games like Power Stone.
For the PS2, the top games I played were RPGs again, for Gamecube they were games like Animal Crossing and Pikmin, for Xbox FPS games like Halo.
Now with this generation, the Wii is my most played console solo and with company --- and I'm still playing "family appropriate games" like Harvest Moon and Mario games... the PS3 is always occupied by online games such as Demon's Souls, and the 360 is always turned back on for sandbox games like Red Dead Redemption.

Way I see it, way you should see it, Nintendo's always encouraged family friendly games. ...and yes, if you want to get technical: Final Fantasy is sorta' kiddy... in the "I'm so mature because I think I'm serious"-way. ...my favorite FF was V, btw.

I have a fat PS2 and a PS3 with Backwards compatibility and I still feel like I should get a slim not that they're so cheap just as a back up, because I have more than 250 PS2 games and I'd like to makes sure I can finish them all.

@Santa: So, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles, Madworld, House of the Dead: Overkill, etc are kiddie games?

There are third-party Wii games aimed at adults (sort of) just as there were third-party GC games aimed at adults (sort of). The majority of Nintendo's major first-party titles are all-ages, though - Wii and GC.

Is there anyone thinks Mario Galaxy 2 is not worth playing because it doesn't have an M rating? That's why people buy Nintendo systems - Nintendo make awesome games that are suitable for kids and adults alike. It's the natural system for movie-licensed shovelware for kids too (which was maybe more PS2's area last generation) but newsflash, you don't have to buy those for Wii, just as you didn't have to buy them for PS2.

My guess as to Wii 2 release date is that they probably won't rush it - as this chart shows, Wii is still selling well, and because both other competitors are also aiming for a longer hardware generation, Nintendo probably have the breathing space to do the same. They probably will have something ready to launch at the end of 2011, but if Wii sales haven't been decimated by Kinect or something, they'll hold it back. Would be my guess.

buying a new PS2slim for backup to play games is a great idea (im thinking of doing the SAME THING)

What's crazy is that even with that many Wiis on the market their games still don't sell well unless the word "Mario" is in them. Even successful Nintendo games don't outsell 360 and PS3 games by the margin you would expect given its vastly larger install base.

Despite what Reggie says, Wii owners don't buy games.

That was the case with PS2 as well. PS2 games weren't outselling the leading Xbox and GameCube games proportional to the userbase size. Hell, nothing on PS2 sold as well proportionately as either Smash Bros Melee or Halo 2

larger userbases mean more userbase diversity, which will lead to lower proportional sales, but proportions mean little to the bottom line.

But what are the numbers worldwide!?

The US is only a part of the picture. For example, since launch the PS3 is outselling the 360 worldwide but not in the US. (based on data from VGChartz).

Not sure the wii is as clearly out front of the PS2 worldwide. Hey it may even be a better picture for them.

Why did Khan get downvoted? Outside of NES to SNES transition, every Nintendo console launches 5 years apart from the last one. E3 2011 it will be officially unveiled (with leaks leading upto naturally) and Holiday 2011 will be Wii2's release.

Gaming was less popular last generation? Really?
Maybe the younger kids finally grew up and thought they "discovered fire" thinking that they are more hardcore than the last (less mature).
But seriously...
Look at any game store's shelves. Back then I saw tons more RPGs and adventure games than party-games. Nowadays, it's mostly just FPS and Party games that swallow the shelves.

...and in my rather biased opinion: RPGs are more "hardcore" than FPS games.. considering that you waste hours of your life just trying to level up to beat the next boss and trying to find hidden things around the world that honestly won't affect the overall outcome of the game... while in an FPS, you just train your hand and eye coordination to be better than the rest...... RPGs are more hardcore in the way that you're giving more of your life away to a stupid game.

Communities might not have been as "diverse" nowadays when it comes to gaming, but it was far more concentrated... it's just that fanboyism is shining brightest this generation, from what I've seen. ...back then practically everyone considered the PS2 the winner in game choices, but still liked the other two consoles for what they had. Less fighting over who was the best (though the incoming Xbox fanboys were a tad annoying). We might not have been bickering as much, but that doesn't mean gaming meant any less to us.

And even if you mean popular as in "more people are playing games now" that still wouldn't make the stats any less impressive:
You're still comparing the Wii to the 360, who had a head start.

By your standards, if the popularity of gaming is the success to a console such as the Wii in how it beat the PS2 - then the only obvious course of action is to compare the Wii to a current generation console that's supposedly raking in the more obviously gamer-minded players: the 360. The Wii still wins. It's an impressive chart no matter what.

Nintendo's the only one in a position to release a new console.

Currently, there's not much Sony or Microsoft could offer to make us buy a PlayStation4 or Xbox 720. I mean, slightly more high-res HD? 3D and motion controls are already being added to their current systems.

Nintendo, however, has two components they can add to their next console that gamers are really asking for: HD and online. Nintendo adds those, and Nintendo's next system will sell like hotcakes.

Way to miss the point. Where did I say Nintendo made those games? Who cares, anyway? How does your little rant have anything at all to do with what I said? The last Nintendo console had Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, Zelda Wind Waker and Zelda Twilight Princess. This generation has... remakes of those titles with Wiimote controls added. Your tangential argument has literally nothing to do with my simple observation.

But by all means, feel free to make up another strawman if it makes you happy.
