To be perfectly honest, it's not the 3D that interests me, it's the awesome lineup they already have.

Until now I haven't really been interested in the current generation of handheld gaming consoles, the 3DS might change that.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the catalog progresses.

Except the 3DS is part of the next-generation of handheld systems.

Then again, the 3DS will have backwards compatibility...

Why is the 3DS considered next-gen? Because of the inclusion of 3D or something else?

Also, besides specs, it plays entirely new cartridges (meaning you can't play the new games on your old DS, meaning this isn't a redesign). It's like the jump between GBC and GBA... entirely different handhelds despite similar names.

This 3D stuff is starting to remind me of Jon Stewart's character in Half Baked.

"Have you ever played Paddle Ball? Have you ever played Paddle Ball in 3D?!"

And The Enhancement Gamer is born.

i don't know, these previews stilld ont do much for me.

but at least you know every EGgames or bestbuy/futureshop will have a few demos of this for people to try out, then we will get to see what 3d is like for ourselves, no better way.

I'm in the same boat. People say the 3D is great, but without actually being able to see it I'm having difficulty in getting excited about it. As it stands, the only think I'm excited about when it comes to the 3DS is the analog nub. Playing games that weren't simply 2D on the DS was a real pain.

I don't think either of us made the argument that it doesn't represent a new generation. I not knocking it, really. The graphics looks great, but I need to experience the 3D first-hand because these previews, through no fault of Joystiq's, are not giving me the same rush that you guys are getting. I just need to see it for myself.

Because even without 3D it's a massive leap in power! Otherwise the SNES is the same as the NES, the PS2 is the same as the PS1, and the GBA is the same as the original Gameboy. But even then 3D alone should qualify it as a whole new generation, as it transforms the experience, just as the Wii does.

How in any way is this not a new generation? Has there ever been a new system before that so clearly represented a genrational leap over its predecessor?

Because it's much more powerful. Like going from a N64 to Gamecube.

Well it isn't using the same internals as the DSi and DS Lite (Which do except for different shells and screen sizes) and has the 3D feature, it's completely new.

Sony should release a PSP with this. But then again, that'd weaken their stance on selling bravia 3D TVs with their Sony 3D glasses

I've read impressions that state the graphical fidelity of 3DS matches and in some cases exceeds that of the Wii. I wish there was a way to experience the 3 D effect without physically holding the device. With Sony pioneering 3D on home consoles and Nintendo doing it on handhelds I think it's safe to assume this technology is going to stay with us for the forseeable future. My concern for the 3 DS is price of entry. It'd be a tough sell to have a handheld priced higher than the same manufactures home console offering. Hard to imagine this device costing less than $300. I'd also like to know if it uses head tracking from the camera in addition to the 3D effect.

I still think they should have went with a new design and name. The branding and design screams revision but the tech and upgraded hardware screams next generation. Which is it?

I also want to know if there will be 3ds exclusive titles that won't work on a regular DS. That could get confusing if the games are in thevsame boxes and in the same aisle. I'm going to buy a 3 DS regardless of price but to be perfectly honest I'm more interested in 3D in my livingroom than on the go. Sony has been the biggest financier of 3D implementation and it's most staunch supporter so it's a bit of a shame for Reggie to be bagging on 3D in homes and a lack of content. If it were possible to have a full sized 3D display without glasses at a reasonable price and high level of operability it'd be to market. Just because it's possible on a small level doesn't mean it can be extruded out larger.

"My concern for the 3 DS is price of entry. It'd be a tough sell to have a handheld priced higher than the same manufactures home console offering."

Will people get over this? We're talking about a handheld dropping next spring with top tier tech and hardware up against a home console 4 years old with (basically) 9 year old hardware. Wii2 will also be coming in 2011, mere moths after 3DS.

"I still think they should have went with a new design and name. The branding and design screams revision"

Reggie and others have stated numerous times at E3 that the design shown off is prototype and going to change.

Cody,

Thanks for the input because you know way more about it than I do. As I stated, I don't have a problem with the price if it is expensive (I type this on my iPadi got for my birthday from my fiancé) because i have a soft spot for bleeding edge tech. But, Joe q public may have an issue when they cab get a ps3, wii, 360 or a net book for cheaper than a 3ds. If what your saying about the design is true the they need to make a new look and give it a new name so people will know its a new system bit just a dsi or dsi xl type revision.

I don't mean to put you down for this or anything, but the iPad is far from "bleeding edge" tech. It's a nice design and all, but the iPhone 4 is more powerful than it, the HTC Evo is more powerful. It's just pretty hardware, not new.

Not quite true, the DSi has double the clock speed and quadruple the RAM of the DS Lite. But yes, architecturally, they're the same.

I wouldn't mind paying 100 DSI points for this game at all!! Great IDEA! but the problem I have with Nintendo's Online Stores is... well the Wii and DS use 2 different set of points. So I have this odd amount of points on each system. It annoys the living crap outta me. I really wish they were from the same pool of points connected to my login info. I don't like having to buy 2 sets of points to buy 2 games on 2 different systems but 1 set of points would have been more the enough for both games... well I guess thats the idea... Nintendo, after all, is a business first and foremost. lol.

Why is everyone only focusing on the 3D?
I mean a hand held with graphics rivaling the ps2 or better with a 70+ launch lineup of some of the best game series' ever, I'm already sold on that :).
To be honest 3D might be something I might not even use. (Bcuz i get motion sick sometimes).

Because just going out and buying a PSP today would give you great graphics and a selection of 70+ good games...

but maybe also because even though 3D is mainly used as a bit of a gimmick right now, it feels a little bit like we are experiencing the future. For me it's not even about the games with the 3DS and stuff like Kinect on the 360 - it's the fact that if they are successful they will start to move into everyday life. Really feels like Minority Report/Iron Man/6th Day interfaces are going to become real.

People are focusing on 3D because their interested in it and because it's the selling point of the console. Hence the name 3DS.
