The 3rd Birthday trailer quantum leaps into action
34
We know our dream of playing a video game adaptation of the greatest television show ever will probably never be realized. Still, judging by this trailer for the spiritual successor to the Parasite Eve series, The 3rd Birthday might just be the closest we'll ever get to Quantum Leap: The Game.
Watch as returning protagonist Aya Brea frequently executes her newest power: The ability to psychically leap between allies' bodies, giving her access to their special abilities and weapons. Now, if she had a holographic companion and said "Oh boy" every time she used this power, and was also Scott Bakula, then we'd be all set.

Looks cool but I think Pedobear will be disappointed when he finds out this game isn't about a 3-year old.

The point is one is Parasite Eve on PSP and the other is a completely different body stealing game on a home console. There's not guarantee that the body switching mechanic will even be all that similar beyond the concept... heck we could throw the new Driver into that batch as well, Guess we're seeing the birth of a whole new genre.

Wow, that looks really cool. I've never played the first two Parasite Eve games, I'm hoping they make it to PSone Classics.
Love the "IM DYIN' GTFO" mechanic.

Ah, didn't know that. That's a shame, I'd love to get them digitally.

And so Doctor Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home.

Loved the gameplay in the first game. The only thing that has felt similar to it (that I've played) is Fallout 3's VATS.

I still can't believe this is the sequel to Parasite Eve. Hell, I'm kind of shocked they're making a sequel at all. I mean to replay them someday - even the second one, which, yes, I enjoyed despite its Resident Evil gameplay (no limited save bullshit, hooray).
Anyway, yeah, the fact that this is being developed by a third party student actually gives me a bit of faith. I don't trust Square-Enix with any of their old properties anymore. The current company never would have vetted Chrono Cross.

The first PE had a somewhat unique battle system. The battlefield was a fixed perspective, action was continuous, but you had a kind of timer bar that needed to fill up before you could take action. Everything paused while you selected what you were going to do. The second PE was much more in line with the old Resident Evil system, though I seem to recall it paused as you were aiming "spells" (Neo-Mitochondrial powers, but it amounts to magic).
So yeah, this appears to be a faster-paced take on combat than either of those games.

I would actually be surprised and inspired to see another Parasite Eve based game... if the second one wasn't so unfathomably lame.
Square and square alone has caused me to develop the habit of praying that good games will never have sequels made.
