I wonder how they will convert squares to hexes, it's reasonable to assume the map wont be exactly the same. but I guess you can import and mod it back into shape.

@Draco That's what I would imagine. It probably won't be exactly the same, but it will be close enough for those of us who don't care just a whole ton, and the ones that do care can go back into the editor and tweak it until they get it how they want it again.

@Draco

id say it would deduce which squares could be "sacrificed" and made into portions of two hexagons, or they could just increase the size of maps and make every current square a hexagon and fill in the empty spaces with more heaxagons until the map is filled, or better yet program a test case in civ 4 that analyzes distance in moves between all majors squares and then automatically build the civ 5 mapped based on civ 4 data and try to get as close to number of moves as possible.

@Draco It probably just takes all the squares, and shifts every other layer a half-square to the right. Well, that's probably not the exact way it is done, but a good way of thinking how it is done.

@Ghede Or better yet, Just takes the entire board, and instead of aligning the spaces to a square grid, it aligns it to a hex grid. All that would involve is skewing the board a bit to the left/right. As long as each row lines up so that every square ends in the middle of a square in the rows above and below, all you have to do is change the shape, and BAM hex grid. With world wrap and rotatable camera, you'd barely be able to tell the difference.

Total War or Civ team needs to get a license to make an offical Lord of the Rings game and make it look as great as it deserves. Even have it through all the ages of Middle Earth to encounter the battles from throughout the Middle Earth lore.

@mrmobius

Total War I can see, but not Civ. I would just build Hobbit towns on the border of Mordor and culturally convert them into extinction.

Its hard to imagine that they will automagically covert the logic of a civ4 map with custom placed land, mountains, water and resources in a way that doesnt frequently break the map for civ5. They will be essentially completely new maps, which may have to be fixed.

But still fun.

Looking forward to the mac version.

@Korova Pamplona

The plus side is that the original map makers wont need to completely remake the great maps from scratch. Even though land features that were placed as part of the strategy might change a bit, it'll be a lot easier to just fix the details than having to re-do the map.
