This Xbox Live Gold Family Plan thing is sounding better all the time. Slated to arrive this November, the plan already allows gamers to snag four Xbox Live Gold memberships for $99 (half the usual price), and now Kotaku has learned that current members will able to roll their single accounts into the Family Plan later this year. According to Microsoft's Jerret West, current Live members will receive credit towards the Family Plan based on the value of the remaining time on their current subscriptions. Should that value exceed the $99 price, the extra will simply extend the subscription beyond one year.
In other words, you might be getting some Xbox Live Gold time "on the house," depending on how much time you have left on your current pool of subscriptions. Forget this "Family Plan" business, kids. This here is the Dorm Plan.

Not bad. I just really hope there isn't a catch. Based on MS. Microsoft's past, there always seems to be. But hey, it's looking good so far. I have a large family myself, and we all like to game, this seems like a fantastic plan.

I'm so tired of this argument already...
If someone is willing to pay for online gaming, then TO THEM, it is a superior choice. No person would willingly give away money for something they felt was not worth the money. Perhaps you, as an outside viewer, may not be able to rationalize the decision, but that's not due to their ignorance, it's due to YOUR ignorance in understanding their justification. Sure PC, PS3, and Wii online are all free... except of course when you factor in the price of buying a PC, PS3, or Wii to play that free online gaming. OP already said he has a 360 so that money is spent... there's no indication that he has a gaming capable PC, PS3 or Wii and with that perspective, $50 doesn't seem all that expensive... not to mention re-buying the games he want's to play that he already owns on his 360. So in short, STFU. People will pay for whatever they want to pay for and if you don't like it, don't go paying for it.

@Tab
3 years of Family Plan = $300
New PS3 = $300 (with free online play)

@Tab A competent gamer wouldn't have bought a system that is known to break down all the time, not to mention nickel and dime you every chance it gets.

@Morisato13 As the famous P.T. Barnum once said " There's a sucker born every minute", yeah "Live" users prove it may be more than that.

We can assume you sold your gas guzzler and bought a diesel engine and installed a conversion kit to use vegetable oil for fuel, right? Why would you pay for gas to drive your car when you can get free vegetable oil from most restaurants?
I own a 360 and a PS3 and I still prefer my 360 for online gaming. To me, paying for Xbox Live is better for me as a gamer than what PSN offers me. That's the way I feel while you're opinion is different. We're like two different people.

multi boxing! Now all I have to do is mod my controller to be able to sync to 4 different 360s, party up, join a game, and sync up my characters by walking up against the corner of a room. 4 times the firepower!

I was thinking something that would really let them explore different facets of their personality, stretch the bounds of what they may be comfortable with. You know, like:
smokesmadbluntz
smokesmadbluntz420
smokesmadbluntz420er
smokesmadbluntz420est
It'll really show the kind of mood he's in at this moment.

Has there been any word about the Family Plan accounts being tied to the same Xbox 360? If we could use the four 'Tags on different Xboxes, that would be great.

This would be perfect for me. With me covering the tab for myself and two kids I'd actually be saving money year-over-year. And my wife has a silver account and she could go gold no charge.
Great deal. Looking forward to it.

@ShadowMonkey987 And how many games have you played for free on "Live"? I'm willing to bet ZERO, but I could be wrong since "Live" is such a great service.

@ShadowMonkey987 to the guy who replied to me (he hasn't shown up or has deleted his post :D)
He said something about no free game's on xbox live
hmmm
Hexic HD wasn't free (Sarcasm)
Undertow wasn't free (it was given out to all member's due to a fault in xbox live a couple of year's ago)
Carcassone wasn't free (again it was given free to gold member's)
Doritoe's Dash of destruction wasn't free
Yaris although how bad it was wasn't free
Aegis Wing wasn't free
some of these were taken down from the marketplace (yaris)
but they were all free at some point (aegis and doritoes still are)
and guess what they weren't taken off us when we cancelled our subscription
owned purely owned
plus xbox live's deal of the week is really better than PSN+'s deal of the month XD
20% off a lbp planet costume pack most people have the GOTY edition :P

Xbox Live should have been a family plan from the beginning. Why should each individual account have to pay for Live if they all operate on the same Xbox?
I understand the concept of being able to migrate a live account to a new system, but that is why there is a primary account and sub accounts.
I can't really place a lot of judgment on this until Microsoft releases full details though. There's bound to be a catch somewhere.

Your whole post doesn't make sense. First off, of course you have to pay for each copy of Windows- they're installed on different machines. It's not like MS charges extra for each USER of a single machine to upgrade their OS.
Secondly, your idea of paying $50 per year per console wouldn't work either. LIVE gamertags are meant to be mobile- you can put your gt on a thumbdrive and take it to a friend's house or to another console in your own home. If that gt MUST be tied to the console it was created on, you really limit your options as to when and where and who you can play with.
