Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown arcade machine is Twitter-enabled
35
Sega recently announced a surprising feature for the Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown arcade installations which will soon populate Japanese arcades. According to Versus City's translation of the announcement, players will be able to link their VF.net profiles to their Twitter accounts, which will allow the Final Showdown machines to automatically Tweet their accomplishments. Players will also be able to search for their recent adversaries on VF.net, and begin following their linked Twitter account.
The game's director, Daiichi Katagiri, gave a few examples of updates which the machine will generate, including "DK's Lau has put together a 10 game win streak at Club Sega Shinjuku #VF5FS" and "DK's Lau has earned the "Dragon Wing" item from a Basic Capsule (Rare) #VF5FS." We think this feature could really turn the American arcade industry around, though we're not crazy about the idea of broadcasting messages such as "I just sprained my ankle and humiliated myself in public again #DDRSuperNova2."

You know something has become a complete and utter fad when this starts happening.
Now watch when Twitter fails, and that functionality ceases to exist.
And you actually think the people interested in Twitter would be encouraged to go to what few arcades exist for this? Something tells me the machines would cost more than they were worth for the arcade operator.

You think the internet connection and additional hardware to support Twitter is free? Not every arcade game is networked.
In a business where a new machine can cost $10,000, I don't think the additional communication hardware will do anything to cheapen that price. Unless it's like some machines, and is running on a standard pc with customized software for the arcade.

Twitter stopped being a fad YEARS ago.
People said it would flop a long time ago... it never did.
People got tired of Facebook and moved on, many people have stayed.
People are starting to get tired of Twitter, people are moving on, but many still have stayed.
Besides, Twitter doesn't have any direct opposition... it's one of the only social networking system where they whole point is to leave a tiny tiny tiny tiny little post of saying what you're doing at the moment. I doubt anything will force people to move on from that other than forgetting they had the account.
What's more annoying than social network fads like MySpace and Twitter? People who try to attack its existance as if it does anything.

Defensive, I see. Must be a heavy Twitter user.
Twitter is pointless. Most people think other people actually care about what they have to say. I don't care if you just took a dump, or watched a movie. It has it's uses. like some developers using it to keep fans/customers informed about updates, and websites/website editors sending out updates. But mostly, it used by delusional people who think anyone outside of their little circle of friends think people give a crap about what they have to say. Just like people give a shit about their amount of friends on Facebook, despite whether they actually know the people or not, people are tied up in their amount of followers. Try walking around in public going up to random people, and telling them what you are doing. See how much that gets you. See how well that's receieved.
Yes, it's a fad. Your adoption and admiration of it does not change that. When celebrities are picking it up as the "new, cool thing", you know it's a fad. You even called it a fad in your third sentence.
As someone who has seen many online fads come and go, believe me, this one will go, and will be a note in online history akin to GeoCities. People will look back, see how everyone had an account, and wonder what the hell were they thinking? You may think just because it didn't die overnight, it will last, but GeoCities hung on life support for years. MySpace is dying, and one day so will Facebook. None of those services will ever become a permanent fixture of the internet due to their company's inherit greediness, competition, and eventual "lack of coolness" which will be percieved. The next new thing will come out, the old one will die off, and it will continue.

After seeing that a thousand times by a thousand people to a thousand different topics, it loses all meaning.
So, it doesn't work. Try learning new trolling material, instead of using something that was old three years ago.

Why do you care about it so much?
I dislike Twitter. I wont use it unless it's required for a job (some jobs do require you to actively use Twitter) but I don't go out of my way to insult people who use Twitter. Screw it. Let them have their fun. If someone wants to tell the world they just bought shoes, let them. It's not harming you, or ruining your fun, in anyway.

I made a comment about this adding to the cost of the hardware, and not working once the service goes down,
Self-righetous Twitter user tells me "Twitter is here to stay, not a fad, ect.", then tries to insult me. I lay into him. I am not an "angry guy". But see it for what it is, a temporary service that won't even be around in a few years. Twitter guy up there reminds me of the kids who expect Facebook to be around in 20 years, and don't get that just because they use it and it's popular now it isn't permanent.

It's true Twitter wont be permanent, especially since they can't make a profit at all. But the added hardware cost is little as sega builds their arcade boards with network stuff since their DC boards.

I honestly can't believe you're debating about something so trivial. Twitter is a tool, ultimately it domes down to how you use it. I use it to get my point on current topics across in a short message. If there's someone that uses it to post extremely mundane things, fine, let them (I'm guilty of it every now and then). Doesn't mean I have to follow them, and I'm sure that some people are into that kind of thing. There are some really good people to follow, like I always get a laugh out of the Joystiq blogger's accounts, I follow Roger Ebert because he always posts links to some good articles, I follow game devs to get quick info on new games coming out and so on.
Sure, it will probably die out, but right now millions of people are using it in their own way. I don't see how it is affecting you at all.

Yeah, I definitely wasn't trolling, you are just being borderline insane with how passionate you are about this. And in my book, trolling =/= calling someone out on something.
Trolling sounds like:
"1992 called, they want their arcades back"

Am I the only one who gets where you're coming from? Networking is still apart of the cost because the place that houses this game and wants to use the Twitter feature will definitely need to be setup on a network...which costs money. Now, if they already have a network setup, fine, but the cabinet will also cost extra to have modem capabilities inside.
None the less, this most likely will be "only in Japan" because the American arcade is certainly dead and I don't know of anywhere else but Japan where arcade gaming is still highly popular.
And on the Twitter side of things, I'm with you, and for those who attacked you because you were defending yourself against those who came at your opinion of Twitter, understand he it's HIS opinion and don't dissect and use parts of it to attack him with. Look at the overall of what he's saying. He did state that Twitter has SOME merit but overall, it's just a bunch of self important people that need a whole lot of attention on such a thing as Twitter.

TraceurRyuk, debating, no. Showing my displeasure with an inane service where someone jumped on me and insulted me for disliking it, yes.
Unverified, douch canoe? Lame insult.
AndrewPending, see, we can have a dislike for something, and not be "insane" simply because you like it. I hate Infinity Ward, you may like them. Does that make me "insane" for not liking them? Simply because you do?
TreyIM2, thank you. At least someone else sees what I am talking about.

As one of the, oh, I dunno....5 or so American Joystiq readers that actually cares about VF, really the ONLY news I want to hear about it is either 1: news of an American console release of Final Showdown or 2: a Japanese PS3/PSN release (only because PS3 games are generally region-free, making importing more feasible).
Everything else is just a painful reminder of what I won't be playing in the near-future. Sighhhh.....

Short term, yes. Long term, no.
Integrating this kind of stuff into your product is just asking for trouble when it eventually goes down. But I guess in this instance, being an arcade game that will likely only see Japanese arcades, it probably isn't a concern for them.
