I wish I had something useful to say, but...this looks sick. By any chance, anyone here ever play Windom? Haha, that stuff was hilarious.

Most players and reviewers who tried Front Mission 4 were too incompetent to do the basic arithmetic required to optimize their Wanzer setups or apply the most rudimentary tactical strategies, what makes the developers think it will be any different here?

@mjemirzian2

People didn't hate FM4 because of its complexity, they hated it because it was bad. All of my friends are used to games with very complex mathematical systems, and none of them liked FM4.

In my case, it was because it took freaking forever for the game to add meaningful tactical choices into the mix.

Anyway, the crud they're showing in the video doesn't look that much better than freaking Cosmic Break. And Cosmic Break is F2P.

@(Unverified) FM4 had plenty of tactics and strategy to figure out.If you thought it was too simple or easy you could always try a player defined challenge.

Remember when Wanzers were just another piece of hardware on the battlefield, walking tanks that were no less vulnerable than an IFV? Double Helix just blows it into the realm of Knightmare Frames and Mobile Suits.

As much as I torture myself reading/watching articles like this, I still wish that Square had kept to basics with the FM franchise. That if they had to "evolve" it, they had kept with something more STG related. Not turn it into a shooter.

@Godmars Agreed.
I kinda wished this would play out more like Ghost Recon than HALO..how disappointed I was.

@Godmars Agreed. Something doesn't feel right about this video. Those wanzers were all a little too "zippy". And I know the floaty one is supposed to be floaty, but it just leaves a bad taste in my wanzer hole.

I agree. I would have been much happier with an update on the Chrome Hounds formula.
Giant robots deserve to be big and stompy. They need to carry a believable weight to them. It's for this reason I could never get into Armored Core. I don't want my robots fluttering about like some fairy with a machine gun.

Argh. I had forgotten about this. I wish companies would stop remaking tactical TBS games as other things.

Judging from the features in the Dev diary, what would make this game more innovative compared to other customizable mech games like armored core?

@lazurus

Absolutely nothing. The only innovation, besides the "Bullet-time" bull, is the sheer amount of crap they've been talkin out their arses about. Its almost as bad as Molyneux! (Thank god nothing has surpassed him in arse-speakery, the world would end).

@lazurus All I can think of is have it pseudo "realtime." Keep it turn based as far as making decisions, but have them playout in a realtime turn. make Wanzer pilots adaptive AI that learn skills.

Godmars, what you described (sans AI partners) is Valkyria Chronicle's battle system. And honestly, that would be interesting to see adapted to Front Mission.

Well since this is not a strategy game it better at least be a competent action game...... a mix between Armored Core and Mech Warrior.

What's with this 'Hollywood' approach? I'm so goddamned sick of everything needing to be sleak and new. I want a weathered, slow-moving, brass knuckle and shotgun wielding DEATH MACHINE to mow down fifty other Wanzers with brute force and disregard for personal safety. As does anyone else who has ever enjoyed a Front Mission game.

What's with all of the sprinting and prissy gliding nonsense? Give me a lumbering Wanzer over these aerodynamic pussies any day.

Prissy gliding nonsense? That's the least of the game's issues, Bullet Time is the real one.

Gliding would be fine if there was some momentum applied to it.

So what people are wanting then is a Chromehounds 2....slow, lumbering, heavy mechs set in a "real world" physics system (no boosting/flying), with lots of calculations to determine just the right balance of firepower, stability, speed, armor, etc. within a massively customizable construct.

If only developers would stop making crappy Gundam knock-off games, and develop and improve upon one of the best and most tactical squad games that came out with the 360.

Giant robot game fans are so desperate for content they'll eat just about anything up. You know you've made a grave error when you start pissing even them off.

1st-to-3rd perspective change aside; what looks so terrible or disappointing about this game?

@carmaction
So, the mechs are supposed to feel heavy? I'm pretty sure the four-legged mechs move as slowly as you want. It looks like part of the game design was to give the player choice in wanzer class. Hence the customization bit. If you want yours lumbering and heavy, you can make it that way. If you want an agile, "aerodynamic pussy" the option is there too. (but then, who doesn't want the latter?)

The 'bullet time' bit, I couldn't agree with you more. It's silly and makes up for slow reaction times. That is, if it's implemented throughout both single and multi-player modes. If it's just single player then who cares?
