Bungie considered a 'Halo 4' before proceeding with Reach
39
Before Bungie started work on creating a game based on the planet-glassing excitement that is the fall of Reach, discussions at the studio momentarily went in the direction of a Master Chief resurrection tale -- a direct continuation of the Halo trilogy's story as "Halo 4." Bungie community man Brian Jarrard told the MTV Multiplayer blog as much in a recent interview, saying, "Even before the idea to build a game based around Reach came about, a lot of other concepts were explored, up to and including a proper 'Halo 4,' where Master Chief was going to wake up from cryo-sleep and we were going to tell that story."
So he is in cryo-sleep and not dead?! ... Ahem, please excuse us. Jarrard continues, adding that while Reach is a prequel to the first Halo title, it's not meant just for hardcore fans of the trilogy. "We don't want to open up a whole bunch of doors that we're not going to close. By the end of this, it's all going to come to a nice, neat finish, and if people want to then go play the Halo trilogy, I think they'll have a better understanding of what's going on, but it's not required at all." He also confirms that the Chief is nowhere to be found in Reach (though, canonically speaking, the Chief is on the planet during the game's timeline), which just about breaks our fragile space heart into a million pieces.

Yeah seriously with Master Chief in Cryo it leaves the story wide open. They could either have MC land on a covenant home world with the newer Spartans or Bungie can make a completely new threat or a hybrid of both...
Either way it goes we'll have a Halo 4

I wish for nothing more than a Halo 4. I really wish they wouldn't stop with reach. Like you said the story is left open for finishing, and they can't possibly end the saga of Master Chief with him sleeping on a broken ship drifting towards an unknown planet. Gimme a break Bungie...

there is DEFINITELY a story to be told for Master Chief after Halo 3. if a game is never made for it, i would at least want a novel.

For being so "watered down", Halo is still a shitload of fun. Something that a lot of FPS games these days aren't...

+1, I consistently have more fun with Halo than any other online shooter I've played and based on my beta playtime Reach is set to continue that trend.

they are extremely fun games. the most fun to be honest. but to be totally honest halo 3 kinda plateaued. dont get me wrong i loved it ate it up. but when it came to story and game innovation it didnt bring much more to the table compared to what reach seems to be bringing. we have space battles for god sakes. reach has expanded on so many thing and you would think they wouldn't be able to as much as they are doing because of the timeline issue. i hope they take off and make a whole new thing and help me forget that i have no idea what master chief is doing.

Actually, Master Chief was NOT on Reach during the events of this game.
He was in outer space above the planet with 2 other spartans, while the rest of the Spartan II's went down to the surface.
It wasnt until a month after Halo 1, that Master Cheif actually set down on the surface of Reach.
So much incorrect Halo canon out there :P /endnerd

I'd like him to appear during the space combat sections, or to have you defending the station that he fights the elites on.

My thoughts exactly, I figured Master Chief wouldn't be featured because the action was planet-side, but now that I see that there are space segments I think they should have given him a cameo.

@SuiXide Reach wasn't totally glassed as the Covenant were looking for the artefact and only glassed the poles. Dr Halsey and some of the Spartan 2s were holding out in a very very very deep bunker that was previously a mine. Still don't remember there ever being mention of Spartan 3s on Reach.

like carbonize said: the covenant really only glassed certain segments of the planet. They didn't hit the area where most of the Spartan IIs defense took place. This area also held an ancient forerunner artefact that could stop ships from entering slipspace.
After the events of Halo, Chief returned to Reach (took a while to travel back through enemy territory) to try and find any of his friends who may have survived the battle. And sure enough he found maybe 7-10 spartans alive (not sure on exact number).

There may not have been any mention of Spartan III's, but you must remember, the project is a very well kept secret. Dr. Halsey didn't even start to discover what might be going on till First Strike, and even then she didn't have that big of a clue outside of the fact that Ackerson was involved with something.
That and the fact that prior to the release of Halo: Ghosts of Onyx, the Halo universe, or at least the amount of the universe that was shown, didn't expand much passed the Master Chief. Ghosts of Onyx helped paint a better picture of what was going on in the entirety of the universe.

I'll ruin the spoiler Master Chief Wakes up on a strange planet called Pandora with the inhabiting race named the Navi. At first Cheift doesn't see eye to eye with the people that is until a few Elites and Spartans come to farm out that precious metal called unobtainium.
Master Chief fights them off but, not for long really. Master Cheif will have to fight the Covenant Armada and his own in Halo 4: Fight for Pandora, selling out royally 2012. 3D Required and connect compatible....
Finish the fight.... AGAIN!!!

You're right, there was no mention of any Spartan IIIs being on Reach.
In face, Nylund pretty much wrote it in that Spartan IIIs were only used in like two major operations, and all except like TWO of them ever survived any missions. He basically wrote them in with no leway that there could be more S-IIIs that were used on other missions... ala Halo: Reach videogame.
And not to mention the armour they used was SPI armour... unlike what the videogame has.
Bungie really messed with the canon when they made this game. But hey I can let it slide because the beta was so awesome.

I like Nylund's stuff for the most part, but that is what bothers me. His earliest stuff was written in such a way that it didn't really allow the franchise to grow without just ignoring some key aspects of it. Stuff like not seeing Hunters and Elites until the late 2540's, not seeing Brutes until 2552, and how barely any Spartans went MIA or were killed until Reach. I'm glad Bungie isn't limiting themselves to a very restrictive canon.

As much as I agree with their intent, I wish they'd still had just made Halo 4 instead, 343 studios is obviously going to make one anyway, and Id rather Bungie be the ones doing it.

I also wish they did Halo 4, only because I can only withstand so much milking between true sequels before it starts to bug me. Bought and loved Halo Wars and Halo ODST after Halo 3... how many more spinoffs before MC comes out of retirement?

@TheDarkWayne Yeah, and except for Halo Wars, all the spinoffs are Bungie made. Now with 343 there'll be even more spins between now and 4
