PS3 firmware 3.40 update adds enhanced Facebook integration, video editing 'soon'

PS3 firmware update 3.40 is on the way "soon," according to Sony, but since it adds the framework for PlayStation Plus, which launches tomorrow, we think it's safe to expect the update to arrive today or early tomorrow.

In addition to support for the new subscription service, firmware 3.40 adds a few new features to the XMB. The photo gallery is now enhanced with sharing capabilities, allowing users to upload to Facebook and Picasa, browse and comment on photos, and share photos with PSN friends. And strangely enough, you'll now be able to edit video on the PS3 through the new "Video Editor and Uploader" function. Those videos can then be put on Facebook or YouTube directly from the PS3.

In addition to these new media sharing options, users can now rate PlayStation Store purchases with up to five stars (which was a totally original idea when a certain website started doing it), and have access to more power-saving settings, including a default automatic-turnoff time of two hours.

The most interesting new PS3 user experience upgrade is actually totally separate from the PS3. Sony is introducing a PSN application for Facebook, allowing users to display their PSN profiles directly into their Facebook accounts, view friends' profiles, and send PSN friend requests through Facebook. Yes, you'll be able to use one social networking service to invite your friends to connect with you on another.

I'm not sure I like this "auto-matic turn off" or I'm not understanding it. If it just turns off my console while I'm playing in 2 hours then I dislike it. If it turns off the console when idling (say I passed out) or it turns it off off when it's shut-down then it sounds nice.

Most likely if the console is idle for over 2 hrs it will turn off.

It's already in the options if you have a look lol
It only turns off if you haven't touched your PS3 for that length of time, I've got mine set to 1 hour.

I never touched the power saver options, to be honest.

@den69 It's a pain in the neck though. It doesn't register downloads as playstation activity.

Yeah, I went out and bought a special plug that automatically cuts power after exactly 2 hours of being on. It really improves things. Midway through some Red Dead Redemption and BLAM! "No HDMI input signal"

It's really awesome. You never really know when it's going to strike. The only thing better could be if it was random.

Just turn off the power save and tell the PS3 to turn off when all downloads are finished and installed (upper left on XMB).

I'm sick of the cross game voice chat requests. I do not want to talk to my friends that are playing something else. I barely want to talk to them if I'm playing something with them, except to come rez me or take out the sniper over on the left or something

I could of done with cross game chat earlier (isn't it happening with PSN+ members?).. instead I had to send a text off handed while taking cover in War for Cybertron

Hey, stop knocking the PSN. Rating store purchases...that started with Epinions.com and other online websites pre-2000, so that doesn't make the Live store that much more original either.

@kentuckyfried I think they were being self-deprecating about their own implementation of the five star system, more so than they were being critical of PSN. =P

I think this is an impressive update. A lot of cool and intersting features. I can't wait to see what else Sony has in store for the end of the year update wise.

@MLC I can't wait until the PS3 will come with a mozilla or webkit browser instead of that crappy one which needs extended support for services which should work anyway...

Ooh! I used it! I was running PSubuntu! I used it for a linux class, and as my primary computing platform for a while when my power supply died!

You can turn this setting on already, this firmware just turns it on for you.

Check the Power Saving options on your PS3.

Pretty much, yes.

What's different here is being able to upload screengrabs from Uncharted 2, Modnation Racers, etc straight from your ps3. And I have lots of Just Cause 2 videos that I would like to edit and cut straight to Facebook. Usually I would put them on my computer and edit them, but this will be cool for small stuff.
