PS3 firmware 3.40 update adds enhanced Facebook integration, video editing 'soon'

PS3 firmware update 3.40 is on the way "soon," according to Sony, but since it adds the framework for PlayStation Plus, which launches tomorrow, we think it's safe to expect the update to arrive today or early tomorrow.

In addition to support for the new subscription service, firmware 3.40 adds a few new features to the XMB. The photo gallery is now enhanced with sharing capabilities, allowing users to upload to Facebook and Picasa, browse and comment on photos, and share photos with PSN friends. And strangely enough, you'll now be able to edit video on the PS3 through the new "Video Editor and Uploader" function. Those videos can then be put on Facebook or YouTube directly from the PS3.

In addition to these new media sharing options, users can now rate PlayStation Store purchases with up to five stars (which was a totally original idea when a certain website started doing it), and have access to more power-saving settings, including a default automatic-turnoff time of two hours.

The most interesting new PS3 user experience upgrade is actually totally separate from the PS3. Sony is introducing a PSN application for Facebook, allowing users to display their PSN profiles directly into their Facebook accounts, view friends' profiles, and send PSN friend requests through Facebook. Yes, you'll be able to use one social networking service to invite your friends to connect with you on another.

I wish cross game chat would be free to people who bought the $600 or $500 versions of the PS3 at launch. Of course... being one of those people.. I am quite biased.

Us early adopters should be rewarded for our willingness to destroy our wallets in exchange for 1-2 years of nearly no quality games!

AND i'm a bit annoyed that I don't have a Wi-fi modem in my PS3, which prevents me from using Ad Hoc Party, and playing Peace Walker co-op.

At least you got backwards compatibility for like what 95% of PS2 games?

Yea backwards compat is my only solace. But even with upscaling, PS2 games don't look very good on an HDTV.

Fat Princess DLC is available, but I'm not seeing it in the game. It was a very small download so I'm assuming the actual content is in the patch. Whenever that's going to be (hopefully soon)

Fat Princess Fat Roles DLC confirmed in the store. Discounted price for PSN+ $3.99. Very small download. I'm assuming the actual content will be in the pending patch, not out yet. Confirmed DLS is not in the game yet, but can be purchased in the store (wife's not happy with that)

PSN store has a new tab on the left hand side called Playstation Plus.

PSN+ stuff has a little yellow plus next to it. Discounted prices are slashed out and a new price is just below it.

Video editing is an extra download. Small though, like 1-2 minutes.

No sign of the Facebook integration yet.

I'm not understaing how the PlayStation App works. I mean I already gave it access but I don´t know where the app it suppose to show in my profile.

Please enlighten me.

Oh never mind I just figured out I had to manually add the application as a tab :)

On Facebook, goto Profile. On your Profile is Wall, Info, Photos, etc, click the + on the far right. PlayStation should be one of those.

Or goto Account -> Application Settings -> PlayStation Application -> Edit Settings -> Add Tab

I exactly did that man. I added the app in a tab, but it only displays the Trophies tab, it does not display the friends tab.

Any idea?

No clue. There was a friends tab when I first set it up, but not when it's showing in the tab. Perhaps someone else can find it. I'm also watching http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Updates/bd-p/ps3updates for anything new.

Yeap but if you try to access it directly via the tab it only shows the Trophy screen.

Ah! The application link is not loading for me anymore probably there a few bugs left to be fixed.

Yeah, the friends part isn't showing when the app is in a tab, but if you go to the app page then it shows up. Goto your App settings again and 'Bookmark' it. Now it'll show up on your 'Home' page when you click on 'More' on the left hand side. Makes it easier to get to that way.

I'm reading on the forums that the Facebook/Picasa stuff is when you update the Photo Gallery. Wife is playing Fat Princess (sans the patch and the DLC, though purchased, isn't in there yet), so I can't verify.

With PSN Plus you get:

-Free Zombies PSP Mini game (can be played on PS3 as well)

-50% off on the new Fat Princess Expansion Pack, Mortal Kombat II, Rampage, and a bunch of other stuff.

Not too bad so far for $50 (which nets you 15 months). I forget what the other package pricing is.
Can't wait to see the early demos and betas to roll in.

Downloading Fat Princess Patch NOW!!!!!

I just hope that this update doesnt give any more problems that all previous updates that sony have done have. There is nearly always some problem down the line. Before anyone starts moaning, It has got some good features, like the video editor which looks promising and i am glad that you can finally rate recent purchases from the playstation store, however i feel it would be far more beneficial if sony did a big update to patch the whole internet browser, so that it can display web pages and play videos properly and not freeze nearly every time i go on the net. I also think they could include an update to patch the servers so they run more smoothly without game breaking lag. I cant be the only one that thinks this.

At least this update does not remove anymore features of the system otherwise it would be stupid.

Anyway whens the big 3D update suppose to come ? because as far as i know 3.30 didnt seem to do anything that prepped the system for 3D, it seemed that you had to pay for previos games you may already own to reep the benefits. And the only game that got patched for 3D was Super Stardust HD.

Wow, the video editing thing is brilliant. I can edit my HD camcorder footage (something my computer is too old to do) and then upload directly to facebook.

For me, this is the best update yet.

Meh at more facebook integration facebook.com is more then enough facebook out there lets keep if off our consoles and other websites.

When i do the update does any games not work ????
