Mario Tennis is a pretty important game for two reasons: 1.) it's made by Camelot -- you know, the same guys doing Golden Sun: Dark Dawn -- and 2.) it's one of the best semi-modern Tennis games starring Mario and crew. No, we're not counting Mario's Tennis on the Virtual Boy because, man, we still get headaches thanks to that game -- why would you even suggest that one?
So head past the break and check out the latest episode of VC in Brief below. We promise it won't induce migraines. At least, we hope it won't.
Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer VC in Brief as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks like that.
As probably the most rabid and epic N64 fanboy ever (when the N64 was out) it pains me to say i've never played this. It just wasn't on my radar with games like Forsaken, Shadowman, Zelda, Lylat Wars, Goldeneye, PD, Conkers, Banjo, Paper Mario, Mario Kart, and way too many more to list. Finished 60 games for that system, favourite console of all time, and never played Mario Tennis lol!
Oh yeah, I used to spend my summer playing this to death. I would get so pissed off when I was donkey kong jr and my partner in doubles donkey kong would F%#k up all the time. Just downloaded the rom on my laptop and I'm having a ball lol.
As great as Mario Golf is on the N64, it's even better on the GBC. That game was crazy addicting, with its rpg elements and tight gameplay. I nearly died when I realized I had lost that game somewhere and would never find it :(
Is the voice not matching the video for everyone else or is it just me? He said, "that made me look dumb" about 5 seconds before he whiffed the overhead smash. Anyone else?
I think this also holds the record for being the first and only game in which the presence of Baby Mario is not only bearable, but actually desirable. That baby has HOPS!
Europe had it last week, and I've been having fun with it so far. I avoided the Mario sports games when they came out originally (my age meant I hadn't any interest I guess at that time) but even for a N64 game, this holds up pretty well graphics wise, and gameplay is fun (tennis can't change that much surely over the generations?).
VC in Brief is back! I have fond memories of playing this 4-player when it came out. I already have wii-play control mario tennis so I think I'll pass for now...
