Totally. Apple's cool but I really think the 3DS is going to pull back that 5% of the handheld market Apple reportedly took from Nintendo from 2008-2009...well, if reports are to be believed (which may be true - sounds about right). The 3DS was an ENORMOUS announcement at this year's E3!

A propos tilt - look at the header picture and note how tilting the Ipad to the left makes the car turn right.

@C1ph3rDivyne I doubt they will take it back. The 3DS is cool.... for a little while. I don't want to play games in 3D, I don't want to carry an extra device, and I don't want to have to worry about losing/breaking physical media. Apple has the market share it has because it has the devices in people's hands. Even someone that downloads a free game from the AppStore gets lumped into that percentage with no additional purchase. I had a DS, and after the first few weeks, didn't touch it. I don't have room or the desire to carry around an extra device. Thats why I got a smart phone in the first place, because I didn't want to carry an iPod, a handheld gaming system, a phone, a PDA and a digital camera.

There's a 3D slider, you can turn it off.

"I don't want to carry an extra device"
Don't buy an Ipad.

"I don't want to have to worry about losing/breaking physical media"
It's going to have internal memory, and Nintendo cartridges are more durable than your standard memory card.

@C1ph3rDivyne Maybe, but with the iPhone 4 and all its new features, along with the coming Itouch 4, Apple may be able to keep its hold on the market. While the 3DS looks awesome, the itouch can do so much more things than a 3DS (albeit worse at gaming) So, while the 3DS will certainly own the ipad/touch/phone as a mini gaming console, it may not own the mobile market due to lack of more than gaming prowess

PvZ HD, although I wouldn't purchase it if you have the desktop version, it is pretty good.

Old Steve probably paid a lot(whether it be money or exclusive rights to the iPhone 4 before release). Its more evident in Engadget though. I remember the day when they had WWDC for the iPhone 4, every comment that criticized Apple, whether rational or not, were instantly deleted. Seriously. I know he's paying them some way some how.

@s ls I'm the same way. Whenever anybody says anything good about a product, especially a product I personally don't like (such as the 360), I totally assume they were paid by the company to advertise it. If the person says anything negative about a product, especially one I like (such as the PS3), I totally assume they were paid by the competition to say that negative thing. I'm a genius, as you can tell.

I understand it supports Flash and what not, but I honestly don't see there being enough tablet-centric support for Android for it to succeed as well as an entertainment slate. The iPad is going to have a zillion apps and games designed specifically for it, whereas Android will have apps written for various sizes; some will look good on 5" and some will look good on 10" but none will work well on all tablets.

@ItsameMatt03 Have fun with that. I bought an iPad because it sounded like the right tablet for me and I'm glad to see Joystiq covering it in some capacity.

Android's a perfectly capable OS and there's no reason why there couldn't be an even better tablet computer running Android, so I don't see why you need to post a comment like that here in a post specifically about iPad games.

Android tablets would unlikely overtake the iPad in gaming. This is because Android is being marketed in the productive sectors. This is why Android is enjoying double the adoption rate of the iPhone and the same will happen with tablets.

Android is a powerful OS designed around getting work done. The iPad and iPhone are about closed, guided entertainment experiences. The two are just targeted at different markets.

I was going to buy an iPad, but got a netbook for $250 less than the cheapest iPad. I don't have an iTouch or iPhone (Droid Inc all the way).

Did I make a bad decision? Is the iPad a useful enough device to replace a full blown PC?

It all but has for me. In fact, I'm using it right now. I've hardly touched my computer since owning my iPad. I didn't expect that to be the case, either. There are fewer and fewer reasons for me to reach for my laptop these days.

If I had the choice between a netbook or an iPad, I'd pick the iPad, only because I don't expect to do anything more with a netbook. You can get about the same amount of stuff done on each, and there just might be more entertainment to be had from an iPad. However, I wouldn't pay $500 for one, so if price is your thing, than you made the right choice!

@Ellimem It'll never replace a full-on desktop, or even a competent laptop (Mac, Windows, or otherwise). But my iPad has become my absolute favorite way to read the news, check up on gaming blogs, browse Twitter and Facebook, look at photos, and it's an absolutely fantastic way to write. I manage a couple of blogs and I try to freelance articles when I can, so rather than replace my 4-year-old MacBook I decided to get a 16GB iPad. After a month of use, I'm still really happy with it. Just don't have unreasonable expectations about what it can (or can't) do and you're probably going to get your money's worth.

@Ellimem All that really matters is that you are able to do what you want to do with your device. You didn't make a mistake if you're happy with your netbook.

Personally, I'm loving my iPad, I don't use my laptop around the house, but when it's time to do illustrator/photoshop/aftereffects/finalcutpro stuff away from my home machine I will obviously need my laptop.

Can't say you made a bad decision unless you wanted what the iPad does and not what a netbook does. Netbook are far better for getting work done (try getting OpenOffice running on the iPad), but have an inferior GPU in most models, making it unfriendly for gaming. Also, netbook can run streaming movies from most sites like Hulu or Netflix while the iPad can't.

The iPad is a game centrist system, if that's not what you wanted, you did good.

An Acer Aspire can run Crysis (mixed medium/high and 800x600, but still!).

@Ellimem I ended up going with iPad over a netbook this year. Its a tremendous travel computer if you don't need to do serious work on it. My business travel is mostly for conferences so having something light, that lasts all day on the battery, instant come out of standby, great for browsing websites & using Twitter. Apps are fun & games are getting better every week. It's a really interesting device. At this point, I'm probably leaving my DS/PSP at home for a while & just gaming and working from the iPad.

Caveat: I do work email and such from a Blackberry. For me, the iPad/Blackberry combo is pretty killer for my biz travel needs.

It's just a target shooting game but it shows potential. You move the iPhone around and the gyro + accelerometer basically uses your display as the aimer. It's not like Doom Resurrection where it uses the accelerometer to act as a joystick. It's almost like the iPhone display is you looking down the sight. I still only have a 3GS so I can't try it but it looks neat, and I hope a "real" shooter implements something like this.
