Diablo 2 summons its tenth anniversary
36
Grab your golems, pick up your Paladins and drag out your Druids, because Diablo 2 is now officially ten years old. Originally released on June 29, 2000 the game is still being played today on Blizzard's Battle.net. What's more, Blizzard is still updating Diablo 2, with the most recent patch having been launched in March.
Let's just hope it's not another ten years before Diablo 3 shows up.

Blizzard lost my respect a long time ago. They don't release games "when they're ready" they release games whenever they can take time away from a Warcraft expansion. They will alienate me further once the game is finally released, no doubts about that.

I don't know, it always seems like Blizzard polishes their games to be the best that they can be. Their games always have lasting appeal far beyond the time that they are released. My one friend is still a Warcraft 3 junkie and I just got Diablo II a few months ago since it's been years since I last played it and it's still just as good as I remember. The online communities for Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo are all still alive and huge. It takes a lot of polish and a really great game to do that.

I came to the Diablo II game late, not until 2005, but I fell in love with the game and became pretty engulfed in it for a while, I basically working second shift at the time so it was easy to play while the wifey was at work. I friggin' love it but probably won't have the time for Diablo III whenever it eventually comes out, for shame.

I know this game sold millions of copies, received critical acclaim, and that it still has a pretty active community, but I still feel it's underrated. I've devoted more time, skipped more days of school, and lost more girlfriends to this game than any other.

@ben reebok ha ha ha, i know eh? there's a few games that remain on my hard drive since the say they were released, diablo 2 is one of those games (fallout 1/2, starcraft, half life 1/2, age of empires 2, and UT2004 rounding out the list).
there's something about Diablo 2 that just feels right... the music, the sounds, the non stop loot, the skills... it's crack i tell ya.

You'd probably enjoy Titan Quest. As someone who has all 7 classes in D2 about level 85, and i love the game DEARLY, i actually think Titan Quest, with it's expansion, is better. You have 7 classes to choose from of course, but at level 8 you add a 2nd class on. The game is brilliant, looks gorgeous, it's longer than D2, has similar item qualities like sets and uniques, you can even trade items between characters. It's a fantastic game, i've sunk well over 400 hours into it, and only recently stopped playing it as much.

@Foetoid I do think Titan Quest is great, but I still prefer Diablo 2.
Titan Quest has a great class system and great scope.
I like Diablo 2's itemization better, it seems less cryptic to me. I also really see the value in the level randomization.
In the end, D2 wins out for me. The nostalgia factor might help.

@Heston The Cow Level was just pure genius! I like how blizzard turned a game myth from its first game and actually implemented it into its sequel, without it feeling all shoehorned in. Great eater egg. Even though I got into the game late and did not have the same surprise as the early adopters did, I bet the same level of excitement would of been equal to my first encounter with

I've also spent the most time on this game than any other. It's the game that I always went back to and spend stupid amounts of time playing, after inevitably getting tired of every other game. It was great because they would add so much new content that there was always something to go for, and new character builds to try.
When DIII comes out, I fully expect to be unable to stop myself from removing myself from society and playing for months, at the very least. I've never played WoW before, but if Blizzard's success with it gives them the financial support to make DIII the very best sequel it can be, I have no problems with it.

10 years, wow. It's hard to believe but I remember getting this game the day it came out. I was so hyped to play it, but then Battlenet didn't even work for the first 3 weeks (barely). But even in its broken state, the game was a masterpiece from the get-go.

I dunno if you're British, but GAME sells it as a double(original and expansion) for £10 in their best sellers series, if not you could always try Ebay.
