@Fminus Negativity To The Rescue

Yeah, paying sucks. But, I'll happily trade my almost never used $70 a month cable bill for a $10.00 Hulu subscription if it works well. Hell, I'm paying $15 a month just for the DVR so I can watch when I want to. Still, I'm still mad that they disabled Hulu on my system to begin with.

Ya $10 is funny. Netflix is $9 and isnt full of network rejects like 95% of Hulu's library, plus you get every movie out there. And its already on the 360 and PS3.

What exactly is Hulu trying to accomplish? Why would people pay more for much worse? And really? 2011 for the 360 version? How in the hell did they manage to screw that one up so badly?

Just give us the free version of Hulu on consoles, "Hulu+" is bullshit.

A potentially better solution (the one my brother keeps trying to push me on) is getting an HD antenna and a media server (for DVR functionality) and never needing to pay for cable again, since the only thing I really still need cable for is live sports since most everything else is online. With ESPN coming to Xbox, I just might bite soon. The idea is that with what I pay for cable TV in a year I could get all this other stuff.

put yourself in my situation

I don't watch a ton of TV. If none of my shows are on, then I'm not going to watch TV. With this service, I'll have access to all the shows I like to watch and won't have to deal with huge amounts of commercials in between. This will be like having an HD DVR and it won't be nearly as expensive as cable or satellite. If this turns out to work well I might cancel my cable alltogether

Yes.

I think I will just keep the Non Plus version of PlayOn as a solution.

Works fine with the 360, Wii, etc.

I heard that this was the case. what exactly does a HD antenna get me?
And why does the HD antenna not support sports channels? (I'm not a big sports fan but I wouldn't mind catching the occasional warriors game even if my home team sucks).

@kentuckyfried
All network channels are OTA (over the air) HD, and are actually broadcast at 1080p instead of cable's 1080i max. There are various types of HD antennas, which can give you better reception based on your location vis-a-vis the signals (some are even motorized). There are even some channels that are OTA-only, as they don't have the rights for national distribution or something. So you'd lose the cable-only channels, like Comedy Central or Cartoon Network, but you'd get ABC, FOX, etc for free.

I mentioned sports because I'd considered going internet only for my viewing consumption, but I'd miss all the sports I watch, meaning I needed some kind of access to live TV feeds.

Until recently, going OTA meant I'd lose ESPN as well, but hopefully ESPN3 integration into XBL will defray that problem (still probably would miss out on Monday Night Football, but they haven't clarified the details exactly). Now I just need a way to get VS without cable, and I'd be totally set.

To complete the setup, I'd need some kind of DVR, so I'd either buy a Mac Mini and configure it, or just take the easy way out and go with TiVo (though I'm not sure if that requires an on-going fee, in which case I'd probably skip it). Ultimately, I'm sure I could do this for a price rivaling the ~$900 I pay a year (~$80 x 12 months) for cable, and I'd also have a setup I could keep, and would start saving money in the second year.

@s ls Its not a replacement for hulu, its an extra... This is actually a nice deal seeing how much we pay for cable, and I've used their site for a long time so I wouldn't mind subscribing to get all my shows and at the same time support Hulu.

i thought it was a pretty good deal, until i saw that house wasn't included in the full season thing. yeah, if i go with anything, it'll be netflix. cause of that. i'm not that much of a movie watcher but that's good too. and i just realized that netflix has scrubs too... and not the shitty new scrubs that hulu has, but the classic not intern scrubs.

@aristokrat:

You can do DVR recording on Media Center on Win 7 or Vista. I have done an antenna set up like that and it was awesome. I set it to record shows that I liked (most came on 1am - 3am, re-runs and such I like). I recorded the whole season of Sarah Connor Chronicles in HD. Twas awesome.

It's complicated though and you have to deal with messing with crap and I found I eventually just put the antenna back on the TV. :P

@chromekreeper So you never watch live events like Sports? And if it's like netflix, then there'll be times when the video is herky jerky due to bandwidth limitations or just down. Hulu's hardly a replacement for Cable at this point, IMHO.

I think the biggest appeal is for things like iPhone/iPAD/Notebook PCs that cannot get a decent TV signal natively. That's the only time I've ever bothered to try to use it.

@Centaur there are certain shows on netflix that do exactly that. i dont have many examples, but i do remember when the last season of heroes was going on, i could watch the new episode on netflix the next day, and they would be added on a weekly basis.

True - but Heros is the only example I am aware of as well,which means the "next day episodes" & currently running seasons are still extremely limited. They're just different services really & Hulu seems like a decent addition for those that want more currently running shows.

Netflix still feels like a better value. From the looks of this all it is are shows that are free to watch on TV already no cable required either. Not to mention most websites Fox and NBC anyway have their own players on their websites where you can watch all shows from the current season. I don't see the value in this at all.
