Final Fantasy 14 launches Sept. 30 on PC, March 2011 on PS3
57
Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XIV will be launched on Windows PCs worldwide on September 30 -- well, provided you've obtained the game, installed it and then clicked on the launch shortcut. This step comes after you've made a choice between two different versions of the anticipated MMORPG: a standard edition, which will retail for $49.99, and a $74.99 Collector's Edition.
The latter edition will enable early access to the game on September 22nd ("subject to initial server capacity," Square Enix warns) and will include a making-of DVD, a Final Fantasy XIV-branded security token, an art book, special cover art by Yoshitaka Amano, a "fully-personalized Right of Passage Certificate" and a stat-boosting Onion Helm item for pre-orders (Standard Edition pre-orders get ze "Garlond Goggles," they do nothing in real life). Both versions offer 30 days of gameplay upon purchase, with one playable character and one non-playable character playing the undignified role of item retainer. Should you choose to continue exploring the world of Eorzea, Eorfee will be $12.99 per month.
Oh, and just a reminder that PS3 is one of several consoles that won't be able to play Final Fantasy XIV in 2010 -- since Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV will only arrive on Sony's system in "early" March 2011. Pricing for that version will be announced at a later time.

Last year at E3 Jack Tretton said, "PlayStation 3 will be the only console you'll be able to play Final Fantasy XIV on, in 2010". Now that it has been delayed till 2011, will XBox 360 owners have to wait till 2012 (unless they play it on PC instead)?

Actually, I believe the talks have ended, and since LIVE isn't open enough as compared to PSN and PC, there won't be a 360 version.

Is it sad that I am more excited for the artbook than the game? Well... I do love Amano's work... FF to Vampire Hunter D... Mmmm...
lol Maybe I should get this.

I wish the PS3 version was out sooner. But, this will give me a chance to figure out if I even want the game.

No, no I was not.
But I kept my hype for the game low, and got what I expected, a decent, but fun FF game. It's no VI/IX, but it's solid and very fun. I guess people were expecting too much out of it.

@ZexionArmando Considering how long FF13 took to be released, I'd say relatively high expectations shouldn't have been entirely out of the question.

I agree. Too many people bashed it for being different, but it was nowhere near a bad game. I loved the gameplay, the characters were solid and it was an interesting take on the RPG series... I liked the new turn it took... a turn based action RPG.
Of course, its not better than the best in the series, namely FFXII, FFIX or FFVI, but its certainly better than most games out there.

I wasn't disappointed, but it just didn't live up to my expectations.
Wait...
What I mean that is that while it had flaws and wasn't as good as I've come to expect from a Final Fantasy game, I still enjoyed it and played it for ~120 hours.
That said, from what we've heard of FF Versus XIII (world map! airships!), that should be the game FFXIII should've been. (I hope)

@elperron2 i like FFXIII it's not perfect but it's not bad ether. In my opinion it's a best J-RPG in this gen . (yes i think it's better than ToV)

@Elranzer I was half right. Sony had been in talks with Square about the ps3 version possibly having a free-to-play model like they're trying with other MMOs. It was just a comment made from a Square employee at E3 09 so probably was nothing to take seriously.

I can't even run the benchmark yet. Slowly, but surely.

I'd rather pay $13 for the number of hours of joy that game will give me than buy a different game every month for $30-60 (okay, so I'll probably do that too, but you get the idea).
And people aren't paying just because of the name or because they are the fools you have convinced yourself they are - they are paying to play a game that will (hopefully) keep them entertained for months or years and showing support for future updates and content.

@(Unverified) MMOs in general are made purposely to keep players playing for a long time, either by making the level up system slow as hell, or by giving you virtual "prizes" for stuff that ultimatelly doesn't matter. Multiplayer or not, I'm not gonna pay subscription for a game that I already paid for. If they want to charge subscription, then make the game download only, so people would download it for free and THEN start charging them.

I'm disappointed in the lack of a soundtrack with the special edition, though. I love Nobuo Uematsu and consider him one of the very basic reasons why I enjoy video games to begin with, so I was very much hoping for a music CD to go along with FFXIV.
Oh well, it's not a deal breaker. I will happily get this day one.

Agreed. But you know how these FF games are. The real soundtrack will be 4 discs long or something.

@RickGhastly Thats the only problem was development time, but the hype was pretty rampant, both from Square and it's fans. But still, while very poorly written and executed, it was decent and the combat is honestly the best the franchise has ever had.

As an alpha test I just cannot believe this Sep. 30th release date. Really? Less than three months and the game isn't even in beta? This is gonna be one hell of an UGLY launch.

seriously why so long for the PS3 version?
wonder if i can do the same thing i did with XI. Get it on the PC and play it until the PS3 version comes out and then just get the PS3 version and use my info/chara already in the system.
I still cant believe there's a 6 month gap between the PC launch and the PS3 launch. XI on PC was only like 1 month (maybe 2 cant remember) ahead of the PS2 version.

My philosophy is that unless you're Blizzard, you don't have the right to charge more than $10 a month for an MMO, but fair enough. Good news for Sony that they got this locked down on PS3 for the time being. Kinda sad Microsoft cant get their shit together in the MMO space. Within a year Sony is gonna have four major MMOs on the PS3 in DC Universe, FF 14, The Agency, and Free Realms.

Well they sure as hell have enough people paying for it. I mean, I don't think it's worth it, at all, but 11+ million people do. To each his own I guess. My point was more that no one comes close to them in the MMO space as far as installed base in concerned, so I don't think $13 a month for FF 14 is justified.

Even though I have no desire to pick this game up, I can say about time Square Enix got the graphics and specifications done right for PC, hopefully at least. Look at the first Final Fantasy Online game, the game was ported off of the PlayStation 2 (Japan's PlayStation 2) console's hardware specifications and graphics; yet one would need mid to high pc to play it. Hopefully they have done testing with the current rig set ups out there, before turning it down for the Playstation 3 .
