Nyko's Raven controllers for the PlayStation 3 look good and feel, well, the company uses the term "silky," but we honestly can't think of better description than "plastic velvet." Don't feel weird about rubbing it against your cheek to really experience the odd softness -- we did. The Raven will come in a regular PS3 configuration and an "alternate" version (pictured) -- which is an Xbox 360-style configuration. Both versions are designed with concave triggers and an actual d-pad.
The controllers are priced at $35 and will be available later this summer. They connect wirelessly using a USB dongle. And now comes the real treat: check out the promotional video for the Raven after the break.

See how the nubs bend inward at the bottom? That part gets kinda uncomfortable. I still liked the version I tried better than the standard PS3 controller, though. I needs my left analog stick at the top.

I know people will not agree, but my favorite controller to this day was the Gamecube... the way the shoulder buttons would click when pressed down far enough, the grips on the sides...however the second yellow analog was a bit of a downer.

I do agree. The D-pad and the C analog were a little off, but it's been by far the most comfortable controller I've ever had.
As for the 360/Dualshock debate. I've never, ever had an issue with neither of them. The 360 controller is plain horrible, though, but it IS comfortable and works pretty well for FPS matchs. The Dualshock is comfortable as hell, as well... and all those hours playing Ape Escape made me a Dualschock ninja.

If you really want better L2/R2 triggers for the PS3 controller, there are these clip-on triggers you can get for like $4 that work surprisingly well. I've had them on my controllers for a while and I really like them.

One thing I just hate about controllers on the PS3 that use USB dongles is that you can't actually turn on the system with them. Unless that's changed in the last 2.5 years or so. I got a Logitech USB gamepad that is very nice to use but I was never able to turn the PS3 on with it. Make me get off the couch, will you.... :-s

are those concave analog sticks i spy?
the only part of the PS3 controller that i do not enjoy is the convex top of the analog sticks; although rubberized, my thumbs still sometimes slide off them at the worst of times!
if the analog sticks on these nyko monstrosities are concave, i'm definitely interested!

I might actually try these out. I do feel that the 360 triggers and analog sticks are more comfortable( and I like the resistance of the sticks better too), for me anyway. And with my PS3 controller, I tend to feel a difference if I've been playing the other console a lot. Cool stuff.
I do worry about this silky feel though. You know that's gonna look like crap once someone touches it with cheeto-hands.

The D-Pad looks really cheap...
I don't see anything special in this, other than the "I wanna be a 360 controller" makeover, which has been done before.
Also, the need of a dongle? No thanks.

Does it feel like the Gizmondo? That had a rubberized cover that felt just great on the hands. (Too bad about the games, though)

I'd buy one if I was in need of another pad, but I'd stick with the original Dualshock configuration.
I like the idea of the 'plastic velvet' coating though, why is it that current pads are built from cheap-ass feeling plastic?

I love that Sony has kept essentially the same controller for so long.
It gives them a great brand icon.
The dpad on a DS3 is perfect.
But I would be pleased if Sony offered DS3s with the dpad and left stick swapped. Just give us the option.

It used to be that men could wield an axe to heat their home, and steer a house with a strip of cow hide.
Now, we're whining about whether the rubber sticks are concave or convex because it makes our fingers too tired to play a game with the vex kind.
LOL.

I dunno. Some people really go way out of their way to bash the DS3 even though it's the most popular controller in world history if you add in the other dualshocks which are essentially the same.
The act as though it's actually too painful to use, despite the fact that so many people have been happily gaming with them for a very long time. I think the inflated language has a bit of fud to it. I admit, I wish the left stick were moved to where the dpad is, but it's not a big deal because I have these things called wrists and can move my hands with them.

I've always liked Playstation's stock controllers. Despite them all looking about the same, they've definitely made improvements over the years; the Dual Shock 3 feels a thousand times better in overall quality to the PS1's original controller.
I've also always hated the Xbox controllers. They started with that huge one at first, what an abomination. Got better with the re-release, but it's still too big. The 360's controller got it right.
Here's the thing about the DS3 that I can't stand after finally buying a 360: the functionality of the sticks. I don't care if they're concave or convex, nor do I have a preference on the triggers. It's that I've noticed the 360's analogue sticks are far more accurate and sensitive. There's a large dead zone, and the resistance isn't right.
I like the shape and layout of the DS3 better than the 360's controller though. The way I sit while I play puts strain on my wrists with the 360 controller, as it sort of forces my hands in an upward position. I can "claw grip" the DS3, whereas I can't with the 360.
My ideal controller would be a Dual Shock 3 with the 360's accurate and slightly more resistan analogue sticks. However, I have a feeling the sticks might be limited by software too, not just hardware, but that's just a guess. I'd love to be able to find out somehow, but I'm not Ben Heck. If these controllers land, and they offer higher accuracy than the DS3, maybe I'll hack it and a DS3 apart and FrankenStation them together.

@Levi Actually levi, the 360 sticks are the ones with dead zones. The ps3 sticks have less resistance, which imo is better for being able to snipe people. Are you sure you havent used the controller too much, or maybe somebody dropped it?
You should try a brand new pair of the ps3 and 360 sticks. I have a 360 controller right here that has never been used and has a slight dead zone, but not enough to matter, unless your as anal as i am about joysticks. The brand new ps3 sticks are usually juicy and have no dead zone what so ever.
Ive tested this out for days on end, i love using the 360 controller cuz i can play for hours on end, but its harder to snipe for me, and it just gets annoying cuz i focus on it too much. With the ps3 controller, im in heaven, for about 2 3 hours, then my hands start to hurt like hell because the controller is too small for me.

If I get it, it would probably be for the 360 style controller. Have a bad feeling I will get one for shooters.
Sucks that it uses a USB dongle. Means you can't start the system with it. Guess I'll be using my universal Bluetooth remote for that. :)

why dont they use the PS3s built in bluetooth? i was under the impression it wasnt proprietary like microsoft..
the RF dongle is a deal breaker for me. my friend has a ps3 and playin ssf4 with his wireless mad catz fightpads drives me nuts..
edit: assuming its RF.. doesnt say it anywhere in the text

Why no bluetooth, a USB dongle are you kidding me? I don't want to use one of my 2 ports for a controller. Then what happens when you need to charge it, you have to plug the mini usb cable into the other port? Lame.
