Preview: The Fight: Lights Out
38
Of all the PlayStation Move games at E3, The Fight: Lights Out was the one I had the most advance interest in. While I enjoyed pummeling my friends and foes in Wii Sports Boxing, I was curious if The Fight would be the next evolution of motion-controlled fighting games -- or just a pretty tech demo. After making short work of my computer-controlled opponent -- and working up a sweat in the process -- it's clear that Sony and developer Coldwood Interactive still have plenty of work to do on this third-person brawler.
My demo took place inside of a prison -- sans security guards and tear gas. Armed with both a Move controller and Navigation sub-controller (read: Nunchuk), I delivered multiple jabs, uppercuts and left/right crosses by performing those same maneuvers in real life. (Crazy, right?) When my adversary attempted to fight back (which he rarely did), I brought both controllers together and covered my face to block.
The game was somewhat satisfying insomuch as I enjoyed torturing the artificial intelligence, but the demo was way too easy. The other guy threw no more than three punches and failed to guard his head from my (let's be honest) devastating blows. More problematic: There was a slight delay between my punches and the moves happening onscreen.
That will hopefully change by the time Sony releases the game this fall. For now, The Fight: Lights Out is a beat-'em-up that could be one of the Move's premier offerings -- but it has a long way to go.

Welcome to Joystiq, Chris. :)
Hopefully they do tune this game up to be a great. I can see me and my uncle(Also a gamer) spending a lot of hours in this.
Let's hope this doesn't have a case of "Alpha Protocol syndrome" where it seems like it's going to be excellent, then comes out smoking with failure.

From what I've heard regarding this game, in order to accommodate different difficulty levels, they had to choreograph all the moves to represent what you're actually doing without actually being totally 1:1 and adjusted the AI accordingly. I also understand there is going to be like a 'Pro' mode that is true 1:1 with more challenging opponents but it's still a work in progress.
Either way, it's too much effort for the likes of me.

I'm surprised to hear that it worked with the NavC as well. I'd always heard that the game needed two move controllers. If it supports the NavC, then it probably supports a regular controller too? That'd make my day :)
I'm pretty sure the NavC has sixaxis control. I've seen it stated a few times, but I can't remember where.

I think it's probably the game rather than Move itself, we'll see though.

@(Unverified) of course every input device has lag, the data has to be interpreted, game controllers also have lag..
In this case, I think its definitely this game.. The reason I say that is because this game I think is a train wreck.. They use some middleware that interprets movement and then maps that to specific movement.. Its not even attempting 1:1 tracking, this is why I think Chris Buffa noticed lag.. It just sounds like a terrible implementation..
If you look at the elbow movements or the approximations of the movements it just looks fake.. I also dont like the art style, its like some one drained all colour from the game..
I havent obviously played it or even seen the final release of the game, it could be awesome by release. What I have seen so far hasn't left me impressed though..

But the mechanics worked good, right? (Except for the slight delay, and what do you mean as "slight"?)

They did say they would make it possible to play games with or without two wands, the only thing I could think of would be making the NavC motion sensitive.

I have to say.. I have yet to find any interest in this Wii HD movement Sony seems to be going with. Marketing wise I do see the up side for them. Now, if you want a Wii and a PS3 you can just get the PS3 and play all the silly swinging controller at screen games you want. That and they can now port a ton of games and make a cash here and there. Its games like this that have killed the Wii.. that and the fact it is a PS2 with a different controller and Mario.

:/ But Sony is being rigid with what is being put on the PS3, other then PSN titles that were already out and popular, there is few if more then 1 party games thus far. Who knows what the future will hold, but if Sony says it hates none money making party games, then who else am I to listen to :D
I seriously doubt and hope that half of the boring stuff on Wii will get ported to PS3, games are expensive, they may be easier and cheaper to make on Wii, but thats not the case on PS3 and 360, rubbish games spell bankruptcy. However, you may see the better ones appearing on PS3, alas Madworld 2.

Not interested. It's basically a tech demo with no substance. Sony'll have to show me something 'core' using the Move for me to get excited. At this point, 130 bucks for the bare-bones package (including the Navigator) is too much to swallow.

@ch3burashka socom not core enough for you ? how about killzone 3 ? I am getting this just for shooters as I hope it will act much like a light gun (the time crisis game is proof of that as well).. ever played time crisis with a controller ? It sucks hard, now attach the guncon and play, its so much better.. Thats what I expect to happen with the move its worth the $50 just for that..

From the looks of it, Socom 4 and Killzone 3 are just the tip, Sony looks to implement this in nearly every game possible.
You can't really say there aren't any core games, unless you're saying Killzone isn't core, which of course would lead me to question your judgement of what a 'core game' is.
How well it works with core games is the question you should have floating above your head, as I do, so far we have had good reviews from Resident Evil Move and Socom 4 Move, so we just need to see how well Killzone 3 Move works.

Good article, Chris!
I'm excited bout Move and this 1 of the games I'm interested in. I think this game W/ online seems like it's gonna be cool.
I hope Sony clarifies this 2 Move contollers/ Move and Nav controller issue though cause now I'm confused. I thought the Nav controller had no motion in it at all.

As a strong Move supporter, I have to say: how many of you all DIDN'T think this game was a fail?...seems like every video demonstration they've shown of it up til this point have been of the same, laggy, non-1:1 mess...
The other Move-only games look much more polished, to be honest...well, except that TV Superstars crap...

Leaves lots of questions, bar the slight delay which was kind of expected, what difficulty was being played and how would it differ if played with a friend over online, they certainly wouldn't hold back. If its difficulty you wanted, wouldn't real life gamers supply that?

Now please go back through the comments and answer some questions if you could.
My own question- did this feel more like a boxing game (Wii Sports, or Mike Tyson's PO, or more like a brawler- UFC/Double Dragon-esk?

@aarontuyet I'm just happy to be here! ;) It feels more like Wii Boxing at this point, and I think that's the goal. Sony wants to remove you from a schoolyard brawl and let you pound someone's face on PS3.
