StarCraft 2 free for WoW players in Korea, loses 18+ rating
36
Blizzard is tweaking the business model for its upcoming StarCraft 2 release in Korea. IGN reports that the RTS will be free for Korean subscribers to World of Warcraft there, as Blizzard reportedly wants to bolster the MMO's player base overseas. Other players will be able to buy the game outright for the US equivalent of about $54, or pick up $8 monthly or even $1.60 daily passes for the game, so Blizzard will still make a googoojillion dollars on the long-awaited sequel in Korea. No word on if these plans will make their way to North America, but we'd bet against it. WoW itself has had different pay models overseas for a while, but just the usual monthly price here in the US.
That money can also come from children as young as age 12 -- after the game was originally rated for adults only, an edited version of the game has brought the rating back down to a 12+ age rating. The edit changes Zerg and Terran blood to black from red, and removes all profanity and smoking from the game. Blizzard is reportedly still thinking about releasing the "mature" version in Korea separately, although it'll be after next month's worldwide release.

Geez, I hate to see the future of games. First holding back content and releasing it as "DLC" or "VIP content" when you don't have to download even 1 MB. Then having to pay $10+ if you buy the game used. Soon you'll have to pay more for a game or just buy daily passes to play it.

Hmm, your comment isn't actually related to the article whatsoever. You're just whining about DLC on disc and paying for new games AKA actually giving the developers the money they deserve.
I think it's great that Blizzard is trying new models instead of the old "Game is X price." This could potentially be how other publishers decide to release games like Call of Duty, where instead of paying a flat fee you just pay a monthly fee. Nothing wrong with that. :)

If you worked on the Game Industry and having huge losses because of used game sales you'd do the same.
It's not like in cars used business, the cars gets old, becomes less and less valuable and the car makers gets money from buying new parts to fix it when it eventually breaks.
Games never get old, never break, they're software, they're there. The guy who's buying Bad Company 2 used gets THE EXACTLY SAME thing as the guy who's buying it new, the difference is Gamestop gets ALL the money and the Devs who are guys that works saturdays AND sundays to get that sweet game to you don't get anything. Is it fine for you to do that?
For me it's the SAME as piracy, because in both you're not supporting who you should've been. Sure, in piracy you don't even give money to nobody, but do you feel good knowing that gamestop is getting all the money that should be going to some nice studio?

I don't see it like piracy at all.
The way I see it, when someone sells a used game, they are essentially saying that they didn't think the game was worth their money, and therefore they are un-buying it.
I have no qualms selling games I don't think are worth what I paid for them, as it's the developers who are making products I don't like that are "losing" money. Same applies when I buy them. The guy who's selling it didn't like it, therefore the devs don't deserve his money in the first place.
I believe the ability to sell things I don't like is a right, and it strongly encourages developers of all products, not just video games, to make a quality product that I will want to keep. Plus it is solely because of the used games market I have tried certain games. No way would I try some niche Japanese RPG if I didn't have the guarantee I could sell it and get most of my money back.
So really all it is is giving power to the consumers through increased consumer sovereignty and the innovative devs by increasing consumer confidence, which it does by taking away from those who produce poor quality or samey products.
Quite the opposite to piracy IMO.

@Esposch You see, for some reason everyone thinks games are holy. So you're not allowed to buy them used b/c the devs deserve every piece of your money. When in reality it doesn't work like that. The publishers give the devs a certain budget to work with. I'm sure there are many devs who come so close to a deadline or the budget limit that they release the game whether it's ready or not. Do you think they care about us when they do that?
Also, the game sales don't go to the devs. The sales of a game go to the publisher. Maybe if they sell a whole ton the publisher will give bonuses to the devs.
I will buy a new game if it's something I really want or feel deserves a $60 price tag. Most games do not, especially 360 games. There is NO reason a 360 game should be $60. Only reason is b/c Microsoft gets royalty fees. So the more a game costs, the more Microsoft makes. And don't you dare say it's b/c of increased dev costs, b/c PS3 games are on blu-ray which physically costs more money. And PC games are still $50.

Games do get old and look worse than the current releases and get discontinued as new SKUs. The guy buying and older game (say Battlefield Bad Company) may get the same content as it was on the day it was released, but sure as hell is not the same game as the new Battlefield Bad Company 2. Gamestop doesn't get ALL the money, what they get is the difference between what they pay the initial owner and the going rate for the used copy. Gamestop guys work saturdays AND sundays too, and risk getting shot by a robber (happened here last year), or risk buying a copy of the game from you and then having no one come and buy it from them. It's fine for me to do that, just like it's fine for me to loan the game I finished to my friend, or to sell it on eBay and keep all the money?
I buy a game, it's my choice what to do with it once I am done. If I couldn't sell it, I might not have bought it in the first place, so by having a used game market, sales of new games are driven up initially. They are less in the long run, but developers get their money first, and Gamestop gets more later.

Removing realistic blood coloring and profanity in an RTS game that's about war? What the Christ is Blizzard smoking?

Whatever they smoking, it was probably rolled with $100 bills!
Also, so what? What Blizzard is/are bringing young Korean children great happiness with this. The only reason anyone can disprove of this is if they aren't in Korea.
On that note, I disprove because I want SC2 for free as well. :)

Apparently Blizzard hates Koreans and wishes them ill - why else would they make SC2 so readily available to millions of its users, already at the edge of their endurance? Shame on you...

It's just a "graphics upgrade" as DoW1 was to DoW2...
Warcraft 2 was to Warcraft 3...
I think maybe you were talking about this

Thats exactly why I'm sad foetoid. DoW 2 changed the RTS game forever, at least to me. showed me you can have fun RTS action without 20 mintues of base building per game.
And while i havent done the math, many sequels introduce at least some new gameplay mechanics. Halo 2 brought dual wielding and online play, Half Life 2 brought us the gravity gun...
SC is positively nothing new. I cannot think of a single strategy from SC1 that is not also used in SC2. The tactics are the same. The playable races are the same. Even the vast majority of the units are exactly the same.
If anything SC2 is worse thanks to lack of LAN.

Furthermore I never sad that that wasnt the case. I simply said that I'm sad that a graphics overhaul (which you basically just admitted it was) will vastly outsell an RTS game that tried something new, risky, and surprisingly effective and fun from its previous iteration.
Your dickery and insults were seriously uncalled for.

Meh, if that's what it takes for them to sell millions over there, so be it. It isn't that big of a deal, especially if they offer the mature version later (but not THAT much later) on.
