Miyamoto admits Nintendo needs new characters
79
If the unveiling of Nintendo's 3DS-based Kid Icarus game wasn't enough to make Nintendo fans smile, some brand-new characters from the company may very well be on the horizon. Speaking during a recent investor call, as picked up by Sankei Newspaper (via 1UP), Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto admitted that "We need new game characters soon," adding that we could see the new characters as soon as next year. While we might argue that Nintendo still has plenty of characters left languishing in a vault somewhere (Balloon Fight, anyone?), it certainly wouldn't hurt to see some fresh faces from the man who brought icons like Donkey Kong and Link into the world. (And no, Miis do not count. Seriously.)

@Metayoshi Actually, Wario's name is a play on Warui + Mario.
Waluigi, meanwhile, takes the Japanese word 'Ijiwaru' meaning short tempered, cross, etc.
Take Ijiwaru, split it in half, Iji-Waru, then reverse it. Waru-Iji.
And that's where we get the name Waluigi from!

Why not? They sure as hell are the best 1st party out there.
Most of the time anyways.

I'm pretty sure Daisy counts as Wapeach.

Dont forget Wasamus
Oh wait, there was that dark samus character from the prime game.
Nevermind, Wasamus exists under a different alias.

Basically, no one liked it unfortunately and it got shelved.
I think if Nintendo did a Geist II, Eternal Darkness II, and remade Clu Clu Land and Nazo no Mursamejou, it might work.
I would love to also see a Hogan's Alley game that's like RDR but I'm asking too much.

How about 'Master Hand: The Awkward Pubescent Years.'
You couldn't find a more perfect game for the Wii.

Well, during those years it would probably be less of a "Master Hand" and more of a "Novice Hand" or a "Premature Hand", so I don't know if that would really work.

If there is any publisher/developer that doesn't need new characters its Nintendo. They have a good amount of decent characters as it is now. They've generated at least 1 per generation with Pikmin and Wii avatars (sorta) being the last couple. I can't wait to play as Mii in the next Smash Bros game.

@Nintari now hold it right there. What about Chibi Robot, wasn't that a Nintendo 1st party? So in fact 2 new major IP characters were made for the gamecube(including pikmin) . And it also released a game on the DS if I remember

Chibi-Robo is one of the most twisted/depressing stories I've ever seen.
A guy spends all his money buying a toy robot for his daughter who dresses as a frog.
Besides that and Animal Crossing, I don't know what will make people slit their wrists faster.

The Skull Kid needs some love. One of the most under-appreciated characters ever. Just needs the Majora's Mask again to cover up that ghastly face.

Ok, seriously, the Mother series is RIGHT THERE! Make another one of those!
But if they absolutely HAVE to dust off some old characters, there are worse ideas than browsing through the Smash Bros. Brawl trophies. That trophy gallery was nostalgia-licious.
