Miyamoto admits Nintendo needs new characters
79
If the unveiling of Nintendo's 3DS-based Kid Icarus game wasn't enough to make Nintendo fans smile, some brand-new characters from the company may very well be on the horizon. Speaking during a recent investor call, as picked up by Sankei Newspaper (via 1UP), Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto admitted that "We need new game characters soon," adding that we could see the new characters as soon as next year. While we might argue that Nintendo still has plenty of characters left languishing in a vault somewhere (Balloon Fight, anyone?), it certainly wouldn't hurt to see some fresh faces from the man who brought icons like Donkey Kong and Link into the world. (And no, Miis do not count. Seriously.)

Maybe he should take into account I'm not 8 anymore.
Something more mature? You can still keep Mario locked up in the basement.

I think what he means is they need more popular characters. They've never stopped coming out with new ones, but most of the new ones never sell well.

@thedisagree Every day that goes by without a new console F-Zero is depressing. F-Zero GX was my favorite game of last generation, so I'm really hungry for more F-Zero; however, with my unrealistic hope, I'm always considering the thought of Nintendo saving this franchise to be released on the Wii HD (if that happens). JUST IMAGINE THE BLUE FALCON IN HD.

"JUST IMAGINE THE BLUE FALCON IN HD."
These days, it seems the more different games I play the less I care about whether a game is running at a particular vertical resolution. GX wouldn't have been any better than it is, had it been 1080p. HD is a boring visual tech spec, a number compared to something like the jump from 2D to 3D which was a real revolution, or great graphic design which has infinitely more impact than pixel count could ever hope to have, even at low resolutions.
I just don't give a crap, and seeing people rave like that over something as mundane as a video setting just seems weird to me lately.

@bm111 I agree video resolution is not a big deal. I play Wii on my 'full HD' (plus a bit) computer monitor. The resolution is fine. Sure it could be sharper, but it's basically the same as DVDs and they look fine.
BUT people use 'HD' as shorthand for better graphics, not just the resolution (which is not really that much higher when it comes to actual gameplay rather than text overlays etc - on the best-looking PS3/60 games, often around 600p).
I don't care that much about the resolution but it would definitely be nice if when I walked close to something it didn't get blocky, if things didn't fade out in the distance, if the lighting was more dramatic (including self-shadowing etc), if trees in the background were made out of more than 4 obvious polygons, if there were more fancy depth-of-field effects etc. Obviously this applies mostly to realistic games. Mario Galaxy and the like look awesome regardless because they've designed it perfectly, but for something like F-Zero, yes fancy graphics would be nice.
I like Wii and don't own the other systems, but I'm not going to pretend I wouldn't like it even better if it had graphics like the other two. I'll be excited - with most other people - if their next system has PS3/60 level graphics. And if they announce some nice first-party games to show it off, like a new F-Zero. (They better make it easier than GX, though; that game was ridiculous hard.)

20 bucks says the new IP will never take off and will go in the dead franchise pile with F-Zero and Earthbound within a few years

I would hesitate to say F-Zero is dead, but Earhbound... yeah, don't hold your breath.

There's a reason those games are in that pile, though. Nintendo never really tried to make them big. F-Zero got that anime, but the writing was on the wall after how GX sold. Mother 2 was the only mother game that they really tried to pitch (localized at all)

Nintendo needs new characters? I know of a perfectly good frog king who doesn't like vegetables just lying around going to waste, and I'm sure he'd like a villain role in the Mario universe (you know, because Bowser doesn't have to be the only villain Mario fights, nor do we need new ones like that dork from Super Paper Mario).

No, Wart has dibs because we've SEEN Fawful recently. Where has Wart been since his Link's Awakening cameo?

Huh, I thought you people grew out of that phase where "same character = same game"? Look, just because SMG has Mario in it doesn't make it the same game as SM64. Or Mario Kart for that matter. This post is about characters. Not games.
Of course I wouldn't blame hardcoar gamers for thinking all games are rehashes of the last one if you look at the current day hardcoar shooter market, where you basically have one single game that every company is copypasting and slapping some new textures on (sometimes not even that apparently, I can barely distinguish some of these FPSes anymore).

I think they should make a counting game with Slippy as the lead. Then they can market it to compete right along any LeapFrog items this holiday season.

I wish Sega would do with Ristar what Nintendo did with Kid Icarus.
Oh wait...it's Sega I'm talking about. Never mind.
