THQ is a small and silent publisher. They were a lot higher before the economic trouble but seems like most of the new IP games that was supposed to come out a while back where cancelled. Yeah the Hollywood model makes it so the company doesnt yo-yo like Activision or EA but they really dont have huge success.

@Bloodyghost

To add they're assuming that one of those high-end companies would want to produce their IP. I could see this working if the titles was a game like Fallout or Call of Duty because those games are proven. But THQ really doesn't have a large list of IP to choose from like EA or Activision so they need to invest in their library first.

Let's not forget though... the "Hollywood" model includes unions, agents, and doing all actual production in cheaper / more incentified locations, such as Canada.

I think I like the Developer owned IP better. Hell, if it want it to be like Hollywood, pretend you're paying an author for book licensing rights or something.

This is probably the reason why I don't have even 1 xbox 360 game published by THQ in my games. I don't have much interest in the few IP's they have and the ones I do don't have enough replay value to keep.

@Thorz What? The publisher owning the IPs is why you dont like their IPs?

@TheDarkWayne No, that has nothing to do with it, its just they don't seem to be able to make a deal to own any that interest me. Theirs a couple of titles I might buy when they hit the $15 pre-owned mark but for now other publishers have much better IP's than THQ and thats something that in my mind they should address. Sorry for the confusion.

THQ hasn't interested me since I was a WCW fan in the 64 era.

Huge fan of THQ. I don't care how they go about creating games, so long as the continue on this awesome path of theirs.

Dawn of War
Red Faction
Saints Row
Darksiders
Metro 2033
de Blob

Aside from their shitty Nickelodeon and UFC/WWE licenses almost everything THQ creates holds some sort of appeal to me.

@BacteriaEP I was going to pick up metro 2033 out of your list, I don't like the red faction demo so I gave that a miss, GTA has always beat Saints Row to me. Darksiders is another one that I am considering to pick up, demo was okay but not amazing. I have never heard of Dawn of War and I have heard very little of de Blob if you wish to enlighten me.

Just my take on that list anyways, some good games in their though I can give you that I just don't think they are good enough to meet the standards of the other major publishers such as Ubisoft, Activision and EA.

Well, what if they gave those IPs you love to some no talent hack of a developer, and Dawn of War suddenly became uninspired and derivative, and lost all it's appeal?

@Thorz

I mean, really it all boils down to personal tastes.

GTA for me, is boring. It has an "okay" story but without much to do besides that... except for going on man dates. Saints Row has a weaker story, but there's also more to actually do in the game.

Darksiders is also a game that takes a little while to really get into. I think THQ gave a generous demo of... an hour?? ,,, But really you'd need at least 3-4 to really get into the game.

Dawn of War is a series of RTS games that are based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe. For those of us who were huge Starcraft fans back in the day, Dawn of War was the RTS that held us over... maybe a little too well because I have no strong desire to play SC2.

For me, Activision and EA are great pubs but a lot of their stuff... like most of it... is just rehashes of earlier stuff or stuff their competitor is doing. I mean how many Medal of Duty's do we need?

@BacteriaEP I can agree their, too many publishers trying to copy eachother, thats why my personal favorite games are ones like assassins creed, mirrors edge and Portal. EA especially brings out a new sports game every year with the only change being players names and slightly improved graphics. Also COD 5 and MW2 multiplayer is exactly the same at COD 4 with some tweaks. This is why I cannot wait for Bulletstorm.

The darksiders demo I only managed half an hour of it before I had to go to work and have never played it since so I shall give that another try.

Dawn of War sounds interesting and I will look further into it. I have had brief experiences with Warhammer 40,000 and they were fun.

I think that GTA and Saints Row offer different things for different tastes for example after I completed GTA 4, I made no attempt to complete all of the achievements ect. because It was too boring. Maybe I should give saints row more of a chance.

Well that should give me something to do, thankyou for the info.

@Xoonaka.

Why would they do that? They own all of the studios that originally created all of that IP, and those same studios/people are still working on those properties. If they own the studios, why on earth would they farm the work out to other, shitty studios? You comment makes no sense.

Not exactly IP related, but it'd be nice if some of this "OH MY GOD" stuff included a WWE game which lived up to its potential and wasn't still being overshadowed in various ares of gameplay by a game made back on the N64.

i prefer the move to studio owned IP like EA is doing, its much better to keep those who came up with the idea in charge so that the story doesnt become a washed up nightmare just because some asshat publisher wants to ride the money train.

plus i am in no way interested in designing an IP just to have my complete creative license taken away from me, and told how my IP should evolve.

You know though, his logic is actually flawed. Hollywood does not actually own many of the properties it works on. Many, many, many movies are based on pre-existing material, even if most people watching it don't realize that. The license or option the rights to a lot of their biggest properties. And the true control of those properties remains in the hands of the original creators.

This certainly isn't true across the board, but his position seems to ignore that many IP creators do retain ownership of their property in regards to movies.
