Fable 3 combat video is not safe for wolves
41
Lionhead's latest Fable 3 video depicts an epic fight against a pack of wolves who are endangering a young girl's life, in which the hero transitions effortlessly between the sword, gun, and magic combat styles. Although, given the sheer power at the hero's command, it comes off a lot more like a massacre of some helpless animals.
Don't get us wrong -- saving a little girl from being mauled by a large pack of wolves is a heroic act indeed, and, in real life, fighting that many ravenous beasts would be really difficult. But somewhere between the explosive magic and the unnecessarily brutal flourish at the end, we ... started to feel bad for the wolves. Fable 3 will let you clear forests on October 26.

I don't think it runs on points this time around.

Death to Wolves!
Actually, it makes me cringe a little because the wolves whine realistically when you injure them.

This video really was NSFW. Couldn't the dog get in on the action too?

Loving the wind effects on the clothing and the trees.

The whole game looks like it runs in slow motion. Why is everything so extremely slow? Except for how fast that little girl can run, that is. Though that only serves to make the combat seem even slower.
Does this game use that one button combat system or whatever it was Fable 2 used? I haven't played it, but I can't imagine how it could possibly be good. It sounds like extreme oversimplification.
Also, the Fable games really need to stop using such horrible stereotypes as characters. Why would you possibly want to marry someone when everyone is exactly the same, with a different skin? It goes completely against the idea of developing feelings for the characters, due to them not actually being characters in the first place.

@Mehbah The one button combat idea really was extreme oversimplification on molyneux's part, especially since it definitely involved much more than one button. X, Y, B, A, L were all used without even thinking hard about it.
I also agree about the way characters are, I certainly wish they had more depth. That said, it would be incredibly hard to make the game the way Fable is while each character having interactive dialogue choices and individual personalities.

@Mehbah Also the video had slowmo 3 times, only one of them lasted more than 2 seconds. QQ

Did he just touch that little girl inappropriately or was that just my messed up mind?

@DarknessBear Erm, he brushed her a bit to get her between him and the wolves, then gave her a hug and held her hand.

The whole thing looked like Fable 2 with very minor improvements, and the whole added touch system. Speaking of which, I have a feeling the touch system will lead to a whole ton of clipping issues during plenty of animations if you have your character wearing something baggy/poofy/non-body-conforming

Gosh the "cutscenes" in the game were terrible, tottaly un-immersed me out of the game because you're just standing there and this lifeless person is slowly talking to me or himself.
I hope they at least make the talking scenes more lively and less boring to watch, I don't want to skip them. This video has a good enough cutscene for me, hope it's not the only one.

I dont know the animations look way better than fable 2 so far as I can see. I'm ok with a similar look if they have fixed some of the gameplay issues, fable 2 felt a bit clunky. This looks a lot smoother. About the wolfs wining .. I like it, it's realistic, they are predatory but when hurt the would make that kind of noise when injured.

Agreed.
Hopefully terrain navigation is... about a billion percent better. I can do without constant on screen cues to jerkily "leap" and "dive," this time around.
My biggest concern, though, is the civilians.
How many wives can you have? Who gives a rat's ass. They all look roughly the same. The increase in population in Fable 2 over 1 did not mesh with the lack of character variation in each town/district.
I couldn't get attached to any of my "families" because the only thing to differentiate them was how hilarious they found my flatulence.

@Vandell there isnt anything wrong with the framerate, plus this video is so compressed you cant even make that kind of a judgment on it anyways...

the combat looks much more fluid than fable 2, which is a nice improvement, however people lets remember that there was a whole console generation difference between 1 - 2, so having similar graphics is well, to be expected, maybe 4 or 5 on the xbox 3(720?) will have better graphics.
What i want to know is if the picking up the kid was a button press or whether its a scripted event everytime you greet or save some kid, because i dont feel like grabbing each kid i see AND, id much prefer to hold the kid in my hands and have the dog point the way.
The dog however remains as craptastic as ever, they really need to work on that combat and seeing as how it probably wont be improved before release, i hope to god if the dog is in 4, that they rebuild it from the ground up.
IMO the dog should find less condom digspots and instead scale and fight much better, the amount of times i got frustrated at the dog and was like OMG STOP BARKING, I DONT CARE ABOUT THE CHOCOLATE BAR IN THE GROUND.
In Fable 2 Molynaux said the dog would target ranged enemies if you used your sword and would target melee enemies if you used your gun, i however saw no evidence of this, if lionhead cant program the dog combat logic, they need to hire or remove the furry companion asap.

This games engine needs some massive clean up thats for sure. For starters the blur effect needs to be toned down by half (It was a major problem for my eyes in Fable 2 game when I had my Xbox360, and it seems they still use the cheap blur effects on screen now in combat as well) The AA work is still last generation useing cheap crappy performaning AA makes the whole game looked washed out, and in a game thats boasted by the developers to have higher detail and better effects the blur, and poor AA quality means half of them go un noticed by the gamer.
If they can fix those issues the game will look much better IMHO.

I actually don't think this looks very good. I couldn't finish Fable 2 (although my gf at the time finished 100% of the game) and at this rate I will probably try Fable 3 but it's not looking like I'll be invested enough to finish this one either.

This is TYPICAL of fable. It' s always had an overpowered combat system. The last game the combat should have just been left out it was so easy. It makes all the battles anti climatic. It also never gives you a sense of accomplishment because it's so easy to kill everything. They need to quit catering to 5 year old gamers and make it a challenge.
