NPD on the Red Dead, Alan Wake, and Split/Second retail showdown

@SlyDog So the troll brings up the fact that UC2 was on one system and RDR on two. Both are amazing games and it would be a travesty for anyone that considers themselves a gamer to miss either game.

@The angry pro consumer gaming ga All I was saying is that although Uncharted 2 was a better critically received game, it still gets easily passed in sales if there is an also excellent (although slightly inferior) multi-platform game. I had temporarily forgotten the fact that RDR released on PS3 as well as 360 (I know, stupid of me)

Kind of splitting hairs by saying Uncharted 2 or RDR is better/inferior than one another. Both are extremely highly rated games. RDR got a metacritic average of 95 and UC2 of 96. R* caught lightning in a bottle with RDR and the game deserves all the sales it gets. In my opinion, it's up there with God of WAr 3 for PS3 goty (I say PS3 because I don't have 360 so can't judge the excellent looking games it's had this year like alan wake, mass effect, metro 2033, splinter cell).

I am exclusively a PS3 owner, and it is clearly a matter of opinion between the two games as they were both rated so highly. However, Uncharted 2 was an easy pick for GOTY. Can RDR be considered as the only plausible choice for that award this year?

PS3 RDR needs another 1.5 million to pass U2 sales. Thanks for making an ass out of yourself though.

@Kodros I meant in the first month it was out. RDR has sold .3 million more than Uncharted 2 did the first month it was out.

@SlyDog I don't think the GOTY pick was so cut and dry as to say UC2 was "an easy pick". There were quite a few games that could have taken it just as easily. Batman Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed II, Left 4 Dead 2, Modern Warfare 2 (though I'm glad that one didn;t win), Street Fighter IV, Borderlands, Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5 There were many. It's extremely and rediculously close-minded of you to say "Uncharted 2 was an easy pick for game of the year." Yes, it was SPIKE's GOTY. That doesn't represent the rest of the gaming community. Some other reviewers picked other games as their GOTY.

There will never in the history of the world be an "only plausible choice" for a GOTY. Mass Effect 2 was also an excellent title that could take the GOTY title as easily as RDR. Halo Reach and Black Ops will be out in a few months and I can almost assure you that they will be highly rated candidates. BioShock 2 might be worthy of a nomination but I doubt it will win. Splinter Cell. Blur. Split/Second. Alan Wake. Bad Company 2. God of War 3. Final Fantasy XIII.

Yeah I just streamed the Bright Falls prequel to Alan Wake on Zune whilst I ate my dinner. I want to play it but I'm not prepared to spend that much on it.

@BlackedOut The game isn't bad again I think its good, just not great like how "Chris" keeps spouting about. The 4th and 5th episodes are when the game really shines and the 1st gets you started, but 2&3 are repetitive to 1 and 6 is slightly better than the first 3episodes.

I don't know what you two are talking about? I ditched Red Dead after a week of it. I got so bored of the game and picked up Alan Wake and beat it about 3 times. Its so good definitely worth full price.

Yeah, I was really hoping for one. I just bought it two days ago, still haven't opened it. Waiting to finish GTA4 (on PC :D 5$ on Steam=instabuy)

In everyone possible. Having played GTA4, I can say that while the games is great and is very fun, is no that great that every single site and review said.

Many reviews gave it 10's or 11's, claiming that this games is the start of a new era in human history or something, but actually, I see GTA4 as a step-back from previous installments, specially Vice City and San Andreas, as the gameplay elements were stripped down, leaving just some kind of "semi-GTA3" with better graphics.

that happens with every game. the people who already love the game are the ones who buy it right off the bat (or at least within the first month) and as word gets out- and marketing ramps up, other people who were on the fence, or have heard about it for the first time- may not know what to expect other than 'OMG- GREATEST GAEM EVAR!!!"
and when they realize that there are many small (even insignificant) flaws in the game, it's easy to understand how the cynicism would build.

i don't think either game is all that amazing really. they are very solid games, though, and extremely ambitious in their design, and really good in overall presentation. but if you aren't a fan of the Rockstar formula- there are definitely better games out there. like many open-world games, RDR is a very interesting Jack of all trades (and absolutely worth playing) but is a master of none...

God, gamers, when taken as a whole, are the most fickle group of emotionally-stunted and moronically capricious consumer groups in the history of this or any world. Why does anyone even cater to this idiot demographic?

@Dr Perry Ulysses Cox Hah! Well, sort of. What I mean is that I remember what happened with GTA and that put my opinion of RDR into a perhaps more objective position. There were a lot of people out there going "THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER!" But when I played it, I was just like "This game is pretty good. Nothing special, but still pretty good."

I totally agree. I loved the game, bought it Day One and played thru it. My buddy bought Red Dead and finished it so we traded and I've totally lost interest in finishing it. I'm ready to get my Alan Wake back and play thru again on Nightmare

I agree. I think Alan Wake is SO good and it breaks my heart to think that it may not sell anymore and the franchise will be lost, and then the next COD sells millions instantly and so they keep them coming.

How can someone spend so many years developing a game and making it better over and over again to put it out there on the worst date of the year so far :(

There hasn't ever been a really good Western title before. And while Red Dead uses the same basic GTA engine, I personally played through it much differently than I would a GTA title. I felt more attached to Marston and felt like a "good guy" rather than a criminal, and thus made good choices throughout the entirety. Maybe when I hit 100% and get that Bureau outfit I'll switch gears to wrack havoc, but it's not what made that game fun for me.
