Ask anybody what they think about PlayStation Home and you'll likely get one of two reactions: "What is that?" and "Meh." For PlayStation Home director Jack Buser, however, it's quite the accomplishment -- a "very good business model for PlayStation, and quite profitable," he told Gamasutra.
"With numbers like we have, it goes without saying that Home has been a huge success for our company, something that we have been very proud of." The numbers he's talking about look pretty decent on paper: there are over 100 games on the service, the average user session is about 70 minutes, there are over 50 unique spaces available and 14 million people have at least stepped foot in Home once. Not bad, but it's all about the context -- do people play those games? Do people explore those unique spaces? How many of those 14 million are actual active users?
"We haven't talked too much about the platform itself, but what we have said is that every mature virtual item we have ever created has been profitable," Buser said. "We've released over 5,000 virtual items on the platform, and we know that once those items reach maturity, they are profitable. So you see us creating a tremendous amount of virtual items, because it is such a high margin business for us to be in." So it's very much a long-tail thing, then?
Look, you could probably present the numbers in any way possible and spin the service as a success, but for us, the real success is its ability to pull in new users, its effectiveness as a marketing tool and its profits from the sale of virtual goods. Log in now and you'll no doubt find a community there, passionate about Home. But is it pulling in new users? Are marketers beating down the (virtual) door to get into Home? And how much does Sony really earn from the service annually? Until we get less vague statistics and hard numbers, we might never know.

This post sounds a bit harsh... It seems like an attack in a way...
Of course those spaces get visits, of course new people join up all the time... it's a free service very obviously included on the menu when so many thousands/millions of Americans buy PS3s... believe it or not, but not everyone who buys a PS3 is a hardcore gamer. People buy them as gifts etc. etc., and people check it out, and some people like it. If you walked around the local hub in PS Home I guarantee you'll find at least a few new people. Hell the amount of times I add a good person on there and they have no trophies or haven even got an avatar yet and they say of how they just got a PS3 recently, it happens to me all the time.
Yes Sony should release some figures, and yeah I know this post wasn't directly attacking home, but it seemed implied that way from the writer who is a hardcore gamer. Especially at the last paragraph... jeez have you seen how many games that come out today have some sort of an influence of home? From costumes to fully decked out spaces... ugh.

This is exactly what I was gonna say, albeit worded differently. I personally love Home for just hanging out with friends when I don't have the chance in real life. It's actually a lot of fun if you have people to go in Home with. Boring alone, though.

I completely agree. The last paragraph really felt like an attack.
The point is, even if they're making a dollar above cost, they're still in the green. And that's saying more than a lot of businesses out there.
A success is a success is a success. Be happy for them, even if you don't know the exact details. If they were bleeding money, then you might have something to complain about. But they seem very happy with hat they've got. Why can't you be happy for them, mom?
Wow, I think it's time I called my therapist.

Wiizer, coming from a live user, the only ads I run into on my Xbox are the ones in Last.fm and that occasional one that pops up on the dashboard.
Insane right?

Aside from the spaces themselves being advertising for the game it's representing, Ads in Home are not really the "focus" anymore like they were being touted to be. I think Users responded poorly to them, and they've stopped designing their core areas to revolve around billboards and such.
I think what's surprised Sony and a lot of the Home Dev team is just how willing a portion of the population has been to buy meaningless items like shirts and such. Even Capcom has been getting away with charging ridiculous amounts for SF4 characters... I'm ashamed to admit even though I rarely go in there, I've even dropped around 20-30 on items (the $5 minimum to add funds being a large culprit there...).
So yeah, anyway, I don't think it's holding the Ads out of XMB. Just look at the no longer optional "info box" up top. And the "What's New" default selection on boot up (that one is optional, but still...).
I do still agree there's less in your face advertising then you see on an Xbox though.

What are people talking about when they talk about these ads? Are they talking about the things that say "new DLC available for xxxxx, get it here!", or "xxxxx demo released"? Because that kind of stuff is a GOOD thing, as a lot of the stuff many gamers wouldn't even know existed without it.
Or are you people talking about actual advertisements for non-gaming related products? Because while I'm sure they're in there somewhere, I'm on my xbox 10 hours a week and I've never even noticed them. I honestly couldn't even give you an example of one off the top of my head. The idea that this is "aggressive" marketing is absurd. Are you people taping magazine ads for Mountain Dew to your tv and mixing them up as part of XBL?

To be fair, once you're "in game" you're obviously not getting ads anymore. Also if you use the "shortcut" navigation method you won't get see them much either. Then, on top of that, our culture is becoming highly unconscious to the ads around them, tending to blur them out and ignore them. I doubt you know what ads were on Joystiq today so far.
They're still there, trying to get me to buy Doritos or a Scion or something. Maybe "aggressive" is a poor choice of word, but I'd say it's fair to consider Xbox the "leader" in advertising, were this a competition.

I log in occasionally, just to play some pool.. There is so much free stuff in there as well.. Audi gave me a free audi apartment.. In fact that whole audi complex looks amazing the floor the reflection, the views.. Thats the thing with the service any brand can open a space and advertise their goods and include mini games.. I really like the audi space just for the look of it.
Did any other platform provide you with a virtual look into their E3 setup ? You could literally walk around an exact clone of Sony's E3 Booth directly from Home.. If anything you have to respect that as a nice idea if nothing else..
David , do me a favour log into home for half an hour and just walk around do this for a few days.. See how many times you see the same people.. Grab another of the joystiq staff and play a game of pool with them a couple of times, see if you view changes of it..
Every time you log in your put into a different virtual home space and no matter what time I have logged in its always been incredibly busy..
This should give you an indication of how busy it is...
What would have made home perfect would have been voice chat.. When they launched it it had voice chat, they removed it for 2 reasons first was obviously bandwidth, the 2nd was idiots running around swearing..
I still think they need to re-enable voice, with voice enabled you can play pool talking to random people and instantly know if its a male or female for example or hold a decent conversation..
The initial no better than flash games were disappointing, but games like sodium 1 have shown 1 thing which is really important, opengl or 3d acceleration directly from within home .. How long before the add stuff like an environment where you can run / jump freestyle
The service is actually very interesting, I am glad we have it on the console..

Are you kidding me? Of course XBL is obliterated with ads. You're probably too used it to notice it like me. Haven't you seen the commercial for Hotpockets? It actually pretty cool to see that MS can utilize XBL to stream full motion videos on the dash even though it used for something as lame as advertising Hotpockets.

@Wiizer Least it's not in the top right hand corner all the time, hell you don't even have to scroll through ads to play your game.
On My Xbox there are no ads, only ads you get are when you look at the Video Marketplace, or Xbox News or Music one.
What are you expecting to see? Nothing?

I love the newer spaces. More and more spaces are coming with built in games, so it's almost like a giant arcade. Tower Defense for the Assassin's Creed space was pretty fun (although a bit confusing at first and it needs a better camera...).
I don't know, it's like the whole damn entirety of Home is like playing a modern Point and Click adventure with no story. Wander around cool looking areas, looking for places to click, play little mini-games to grab items... It's a Point and Click Open World MMO!!!
...well.. "open world" as in you can go wherever you want whenever you want... not like a sprawling city or anything...

Not that it matters what I think to anyone here, but I think home is a giant letdown...Especially, given it's potential to be something awesome. The character customization is the worst part of it...Realism was a cool choice, but there is practically no facial animation. This makes your avatar seem soulless and practically unrelatable. The point of an Avatar is that it represents you and you should connect with it on some basic level. I would've also liked to see more of a world to explore in general. having your own little spot where no one goes is always a cool feeling! Housing should also give you a better change to showcase your taste in games, maybe the number of trophies you've acquired could effect something. Feels like nothing more than a lack luster chat interface to me...Lastly, the games...Having a limit to the number of people who can play a game is silly! I never got a chance to play any of them, spent most of my time waiting in lines to play them. Come on Sony!
Then again it is free and you get what you pay for. Hopefully with Plus coming into this, they will be forced to raise the bar a bit!

It sounds like you haven't been to Home in a while... most if not all of the newer games have no limit on how many can play, and there's so many awesome areas to explore now. There's also a ton of items now, so everyone is looking far less "realistic"... lots of crazy costumes out there. I saw a Bulldog running around the other day... still not a lot of facial animation, sure, but there's enough options to where you feel unique and everyone around you seems to have their own "feel" or "personality" to them.
The personal spaces though... yeah... they need some help. They did add Picture Frames though, so you can put pictures of whatever you want up in your space. I also just unlocked a TV... I haven't tried it yet, and I kind of doubt it works like the one Harrison showed way back when.... but I'm slightly hopeful I can have my own Videos....
Anyway, there's a lot to like in the current version of Home. Downloads are a bit snappier, too, although you'll still wish they were better. And I get randomly disconnected sometimes... that could just be my internet though, that happens to me on most games.

Meh, I believe their measure of income for home is mostly in virtual items, in which case everyone complains endlessley about avatars on the 360 and I'm sure those were a LOT cheaper to create than Home, and probably bring in a lot more money in virtual item sales than Home does as well.
I guess from a business standpoint, you can't complain too much about something that's turning you a profit. It certainly didn't end up being the big system seller they were hoping for though.

Its another feature that makes the PSN great...

Did you know you can call friends from within home and hold a conversation with them ? So you can have a private chat while playing a game of pool, did you know you can launch any game from within home and your friends in home can join ? Or that you can start a game launch and get anyone around you to join in if they have the game once you exit the game you get automatically dropped back into home..
Its party chat but from within a 3d environment, but you don't use it so you don't know about its many features..

I have heard you moaning about how you feel your so alone on the ps3 and feel so disconnected.. Have you ever even bothered inviting your friends into home to play a game of pool with them ? From within home you can launch a game of whatever you like they can all join the game you set up and once you get bored you will be put back into home where you can carry on your private conversations and play another game of pool.. Hey all of a sudden the PSN is a lot more lively and makes you way more connected, but you dont see this ability from it..
Also I and others have mentioned Home in numerous PSN vs XBL arguments.. We usually get down voted and shouted down by people like yourself who have never actually used the service or have any idea of the services many features.. So what's the point of pointing out all of the stuff Home does to people not even willing to listen ?
I can almost guarantee that if Home was an XBL thing, 360 fanboys would be shouting about its greatness and how its so social and how dull the ps3 is because it doesn't have it and how they can hang out with their friends and have an awesome time playing pool blah blah blah..

@Ashkental Sorry bro I live in New Zealand where the PS3 still costs $600 (US $415) and I'm sorry but if you think that's affordable to everybody, then you've got another thing coming. Also, PSN+ is just people being fooled into paying Sony for things that they wouldn't have bought if PSN+ hadn't existed. I have a PS3 but I certainly don't think the pricepoint is good, and I certainly won't encourage Sony by paying for PSN+.
Anyway, that wasn't my point. My point is, why would anybody go on Home if they had games to play? I don't know anybody who does.

Hi there!
I live down under too (In Australia) and I would just like to say please stop your bitching about the prices here!
Yes, PS3's RRP is AU$500/NZ$600, but you're forgetting that US prices exclude tax and that no-one actually sells things at RRP here.
I personally bought mine (admittedly 2nd hand) 6 months ago for $325 with LittleBigPlanet. Even at Launch Dick Smith were giving away free copies of Batman, which EB would give $60 trade in for at the time.
Hell, if I went to the shops and got one right now, I would come back with a PS3, a game, HDMI cables and a PlayTV for my $500.

The thing with Home is that it doesn't do well with us commenters on videogame sites. We're "core" gamers and this appeals to non-core gamers. I've heard stories of people mentioning their friend, their sister, their gf, basically anyone who is into very social-centric thing, liking Home a lot while the other people who use the PS3 ignore it.

Hi, also from New Zealand!
Home is profitable, but how can it be profitable when people spent all their money on games you say? Well maybe they do spend money on Home and you are just wrong. And why do people go on Home when they can play games? Maybe you're just anti-social..? I kinda like meeting new people from around the world and discussing games with them and getting together to play some games together (or at least try on NZ internet)... and yes the PS3 is pricey, but it's not completely unaffordable. If you can't buy games for a PS3, well that's just too bad... I mean, a 360 over here with three games is about the same price as a PS3, but that's not including your Gold Live subscription bla bla bla, I'm not going to get into all of that but you get my point... you're just being completely illogical.

So Sony's crazy somehow just because your friends suck?...never thought of it like that...
Everytime I log into home, it's crowded...I'd say that's a success to me...not only that, but I'm probably the only person on there that isn't decked out in paid digital clothing...
With as many different things to do in Home, anyone who CAN'T find entertainment on there are either not trying or just plain boring themselves...
