Not to brag (or to be a douche) but I knew this game would suck. It had a good concept but from what I saw this game just REALLY sucked. Thank god I was right.

Wait, "good concept"?

The concept was "Hey, let's do Raze's Hell, but instead base it on Manhunt. Those games sold really well, right?"

Yeesh. I was turned off by this game the second I saw the first screenshots, the big lame bears are so horrifically stupid I wonder who they were targeting with this garbage. So, so stupid. The metacritic average for this one ain't gonna be pretty.

So how is that over 2,200 people have rated the game 4.5/5 via the console or xbox.com?

They must have been voting by the IDEA of the game. Very disappointing to hear how it actually is:(

I can't believe these guys thought this game would do well as a new IP, a $60 game, and it would stand on just the violence alone...

Yeah, like the reviewer said, this would be good as a cheap-ish downloadable game, but not a retail game.

Also, on the stars thing, is it possible to somehow have the user press a button to show them, and have them hidden until then. Because I liked how I could read a Joystiq review and make my own judgement based on the words of the review. While the stars are great, seeing them before I finish reading makes me prejudge how I'm going to think about the game.

Well then why don't you just buy yourself a pair of red flannel feety pajamas?

See they have a flap that opens up in the back, so longer would you have to choose between pooping and being warm!

And that is what it feels like to be a bear :D

I really wanted it to be good, but all the previews were just these idea pitches--"You're a mean bear! Look--stuffing instead of blood!"--that I finally decided that it was going to suck and they knew it. Which is too bad, because I loved the idea.

The reason this game had so much hype is because everyone was hoping that it would be a spiritual successor to the conker games. Unfortunately, that seems not to be the case, at all.

Singularity on the other hand is amazing (singleplayer). I love how it has a sort of tutorial to survival horror games in the first segment without being obvious about it. They give you a slow shooting pistol and five rounds between each enemy or enemies. And once you are finally to the point where you are like, "THIS IS F&$*ING IMPOSSIBLE" they shout, "SURPRISE! AWESOME GUNS AND AMMO!" It is probably the most refreshing shooter I've played in a while, and this coming from a guy who thought it was a clone of every bad game we didn't play in the Fall of 2009.

@Barry Burton Hey Barry, I don't think there's a chance of that happening. I can't attest to the rest of the team, but I wrote the review first, and then I referred to our reviews guideline. I reminded myself, "what do our stars mean?" I definitely think people can (and will) like Naughty Bear -- but only "unless this is your favorite type of game and you're starved for more," which is exactly what the 2-star rating means.

Andrew, given that the ratings system Joystiq has implemented is intended to impart specific meanings to each level rather than display a spectrum of generalized "is it good?", I think the star count method should be replaced with standalone symbols. E.g., instead of 1 star, a Stop sign; instead of 3 stars, an Equals sign; instead of 5 stars, a smashed piggy bank. I don't know, just something that won't automatically lead people to convert an object count into a percentage score, just like everyone else's ratings system. Newcomers to the site will not likely read the ratings legend and will just assume your stars are like everyone else's numbers.

@Andrew Yoon

Hello, Andrew! Thanks for the response, but i think i have to disagree with you.

"Two Stars" can mean anything to anyone, since there's no way to know what are the expectations/quality level desired by all you reviewers individually are. Many people complained about the 7 for God of War 2 and 5 for FFXIII given by Edge, but when you read their reviews you see that they have their points. "7" and "5" for them have different meaning than the "7" and "5" from ign, for example (and by ign standards, i believe "8" means "mediocre").

That's the error commited by ALL other reviews sites around there (except maybe Kotaku and you old self). When you don't give a score, you force the readers to, well, read the reviews, instead of just letting them judge the game by a number.

The purpose of a review should be a opinion of someone who experienced the game. Certainly there are high-prized games that you can't seem to get into (as i am with GTA and Halo series), so your judgment with numbers would be totally screwed up because you have to lie with them about things you don't like or think it's bad just because you have to give a score that has "common sense" and "logic". It's when it enters the pathetic discussion that game X is better than game Y because it is 0,3 points superior in gamerankings.

I do not see how to compare a flawed-but-great-despite-it game like Yakuza with an almost-perfected-though-not-as-compelling Shatter with numbers, it makes no sense! But at the same time, some people may think that Shatter is the only game to have on PS3 while Yakuza is the work of depraved japanese pedophiles, and they're no wrong at all.

But what matters is that the person express WHY this and that. I know you guys keep doing it, but adding a score just make everything look poor... like all you've said means nothing, because there's a score below saying just that.

Personally, i think it's completly wrong judging any form of art by numbers (and stars ARE numbers, two stars meaning 2 out of 5, 40 out of 100 or whatever). Simply because any art form (considering that art is anything expressed by someone trough a media) are not exact things.

If you click on the stars, it takes you to the description of what they mean.

The point is, a score on a review lands Joystiq on review aggregate sites, which leads to more traffic, which entices advertisers.

...and that's basically all there is to say on the matter.

If the scores really bother you, add the following filters to Adblock Plus:

.joystiq.com/media/*/*/review-one-star.jpg
.joystiq.com/media/*/*/review-two-stars.jpg
.joystiq.com/media/*/*/review-three-stars.jpg
.joystiq.com/media/*/*/review-four-stars.jpg
.joystiq.com/media/*/*/review-five-stars.jpg

- or just ignore them. Some of us like scores, they add a nice, definitive conclusion to the review, and if I just want to quickly get an idea of the quality of a game, I can hit Metacritic and get that. Nobody's stopping you or anyone else from reading the review, and to be honest I doubt people are likely to skip straight to the score on Joystiq very often, their reviews are quite short and informative, and the 5-point system of scores makes clear that you're not getting enough information from the score alone.

Except State of Emergency 2, that game was shit. Just like Fighting Force 2.

I was pretty excited about the game early on - the first render was incredibly impressive. However, finding out it was a 'budget' title lowered my expectations. The first gameplay vignette plummeted them down to earth, especially the visuals. Way to blow it, A2M.

Well, now I am off the fence and will be saving $60+.
