@Kenoji It's probably going to be a while before you get one unless you have it reserved. I work at a Gamestop in Missouri and we've got 19 pre-ordered now and they won't be fulfilled until the 19th. So expect to get it the week after that. That is if you can fight off the masses of people calling and asking about it! Ironically all Gamestops are also running a special for PS3s giving $200 (store credit) for ANY model, maybe as to remind people that the PS3 is still worth something. I kid, I kid.

@psych7111 -- Well, the GameStop said they would call me if they happened to get any extras on the 9th or if someone happened to have canceled their reserve (which I doubt they will).

Plus, I have a friend that works security for the mall where that GS is located and he is close friends w/ the guys that work there (and interestingly enough, I used to work in that mall as well...) so he'll give me a heads-up if anything new develops. He's excited that I'm thinking of finally getting a 360.

@illmatic291 -- Sadly, it was for the sake of convenience. I usually buy off of eBay, but never really sell anything. Yeah, I probably would have gotten a crapload of money if I sold my stuff off of eBay, but I would have to go through preparation & packaging hell just to ship the stuff out, and I don't have that kind of time since I work almost everyday.

You need to check where you are shopping from dude, because you might be getting ripped off on a lot of other things. Where are you paying $400-500?!

It's $299.

Yeah, that is one thing I noticed when I first unboxed my PS3 Slim. It's wider than my digital cable box it sits on, so it hangs over some.

Really? It's the opposite for me, I thought the Slim looked ugly in pictures because they got rid of the gloss but it looks so much better than my phat PS3 in person. I can't say for the new 360 though, because I haven't seen one in person yet.

The GS I work @, we get daily calls about those systems. We've only had 6 systems in since they've been available and we are "reserved" up til late July. They are nice systems. I really hope MS has learned their lesson from the 360 OGs and these are reliable.

In my opinion, the slim should of been the system they released in the first place. Almost feels like a step a back.

It's not $400-$500, it's $299.

If you were quick you could have dumped off your old 360 at GameStop for at least $100 to get the "short" for $199. (Please note: I don't endorse GameStop, but that deal was a really decent one if you were looking to upgrade/replace)

VGChartz data for the last two weeks show the 360 has been selling 2x as many as the Wii and 3x as many as the PS3 in the US. I'm sure that even including sales of the price-dropped old versions, most are probably the new one.

I just wish I could upgrade. I just don't need to. I'll save my $300 for more games.

The only reason I've never purchased a 360 is because of their questionable reliability.

I read Engadget's review and it said the disc reader STILL scratches discs, and the heat off of the thing is worse because of the bigger vents. Granted, that's probably a good thing, because that means the heat is being exhumed...

Has anyone read any reviews stating this thing is actually better than the original, or am I going to have to wait a year to see how bad the early adopters get screwed?

Well, just buy a regular Elite fi you're worried about the new one. You get the 3 year warranty still with the old one, and you can still find the ODST/Forza III bundle. It's not worth it to hold out on some great games.

I've had a RRoD once, and I have paid nothing out of pocket. I spent 2 weeks without it while it got replaced.

@Wiizer they will always scratch disks when idiots bump or move the machine while a disk is in the system. I refuse to believe that was ever a problem with the system. People either didn't make sure the disks were secure when putting them in the drive or they moved the unit while the disk was spinning. (like the destructoid video)

I guess it depends on the person and the enviroment. My original was a launch system, and it died in fall of 2008. I received a new Elite back from MS, and it's been running fine ever since. I keep mine vertical in open space. The brick is kept free of cover behind the TV.

And THAT is exactly what I do not want to happen. I don't want to have to rely on the warranty to fix my system four times in a row.

I understand there were people that purchased the 360 before the whole RRoD thing was well-known, but now that they have their systems, people have to rely on Microsoft for their console, in a way. I'm not cool with that.

All I know is there's one larger fan (instead of two smaller) in the case with larger vents. Haven't looked into this one too deeply though.

The whole disc scratching thing spawned from a Youtube video of some guys who lifted one side of the new Xbox at E3, whilst it was loading Alan Wake.
Its not a problem if you have a brain.

@Wiizer -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd7PRIa5rt0

I don't know if the system has been out long enough or spread wide enough due to most retailers only receiving limited quantities, but from what I have seen so far, there have been very few reports on problems w/ the system. I check GameFAQs regularly and hardly anyone is saying "Got RDOD on the Slim. Dammit..."

One of my friends got a Slim about two weeks ago, and it is awesome. The heat from the system around the vents is quite hot, but the console itself is cool to the touch. Plus, since heat rises, putting vents on top and one side of the console instead of just the back was a very good decision by Microsoft. System also runs a bit faster, both w/ games and the NXE.

Overall, I'm very impressed and I'm sure you will be too once you see the system in-person. But I'd wait about a month before trying to get one. These things will be flying off the shelves.

Kenoji,
Oh right yeah, that as well lol.
I can understand why people don't install their games, but I do it automatically with any game I play frequently. I guess it avoids disc errors.

Also another tidbit, if you get your disc scratched for any reason, yes im looking at you, preowned Lost odyssey disc 4, install another copy onto your harddrive, the Xbox needs only recognise it is a game disc for you to be able to play it.

LOL .. that was pretty insane. I guess it just depends on your living situation. We have two kids and 6 cats meandering about constantly so it's more than possible my PS3 could get bumped while playing games. Mostly from the HDMi cable and the slack from the cable and the back of the TV.

What the video showed is that if the console gets an extremely abrupt movement it'll scratch your disc. Maybe it's because the 360 has the little disc tray that pops out (like a computer) and the PS3 / Wii just load the disc directly into the slot. Not sure of the disc in the 360 would scratch with just a small nudge.

Anyway ... this guy modded his 360 to load like a PS3 / Wii

@Spunky Monkey 190906 what can I say, just saying it how it is.. ;)

@Johnnynumber5 is powered by cell,

That video is hilarious, clear example the guy that picked it up obviously didn't see an issue with just picking up a console when its on..

The modded 360 in your video is interesting, why didnt microsoft do this for the new redesign ?

I also have had loads of laptops and pcs with tray loading drives never had 1 scratch disc and I have moved my current laptop a tonne of times while its been reading discs, cant remember my gamecube ever scratching discs while moving it around.. Never heard of the ps1 and ps2 doing this.. Did the original xbox ? Thats the crazy thing, how cheap must these drives be for them to do that ? Seriously they could have stuck a slim laptop drive in there at least..

After a complete redesign of the console and trying to actively push full body motion controls which is guaranteed to have people jumping around their 360s, (man that kinect adventures all the demo's I have seen of the raft game has had people jumping) It still scratches discs ?..

How many people have houses with wooden floors ? Guess what as soon as you jump up and down and if your 360 is on the floor it will be moving abruptly.. Bye Bye discs inside it.. So does this mean that it is now mandatory to copy games to the hdd before playing them ?

Leaves you wondering, do they even care, did they even think about this at all ?

You've likely read it before but I'll repeat it again anyway. I got a 360 at launch and had a total of 7 different hardware failures before I eventually sold it with all my games. The failures were wide ranging from Disc Read Errors, RRoD and once the refurb was incorrectly region coded. The 360 has some amazing games, no doubt, but the hardware scared me off. Then, I decided to wait until they completely redesigned the console before I bought another one. However, I ended up buying a slim PS3 after my 60 GB fat got the YLOD so I don't really see the point in getting a new 360. I ended up fixing the YLOD myself (reflowed the cpu/gpu) because I refused to pay Sony $150 or whatever it was to fix it. That was the first problem I ever had with my PS3 other than that weird Y2K bug thing that happened to everyone. If it keeps happening or my Slim kicks the bucket then I'll just get rid of the PS3 the way I did the 360 and stick to Wii and PC gaming. There is really nothing wrong with the 360 except the crappy hardware, pricing off add ons and live charge.

Nah, a small nudge isn't going to do anything. I move mine around on the shelf all the time with the disc spinning (I do it not even thinking, like when I'm over there swapping out game discs and I notice all my electronics aren't lined up on the shelf I'll shift them around), and have never even had the smallest scratch.

Given how much I've moved mine around I don't know what people are doing to scratch them. It probably has to do with the orientation of the box (moving it from horizontal to vertical or even tipping it towards vertical) more than anything, since I'm always just sliding mine around on a flat shelf.
