Not a good week for Dundee based game developers. This and APB are both getting bad reviews. Sadly, thia game adds nothing totally new and the only good thing about APB seems to be the character editor.

Joystiq you didn't mention how you no longer hit people and they flop around, now they boringly explode into a mist of blood. Or how the interface was made way worse and more generic.

No Crackdown fan had delusions about the quality of the sequel. As soon as RealtimeWorlds announced they were working on APB instead of the sequel and someone else would take over I figured we would only get a 60 dollar clone with zombies, new grass textures and ditching the delightfully iconic comic book end for the current "hot plot" zombies. Or so it was at the time the game was officially announced.

Still gonna get it though, we gamers are a self destructive bunch.

Not-even-REMOTELY-surprised.

But what makes me upset, is the sheer potential this game could have been with just a little more creativity. At least its an open world game and people can still make up their own fun.

The trailer has it right. The first game wasn't about being amazing. How could playing Hulk: Ultimate Destruction with a friend be anything but the best time of your life. I spent days with a buddy just driving up the agency tower in a level 4 SUV, only to forget to hit record on our videos. But even then it was totally worth it.

@(Unverified) While I'm all for forming your own opinion when deciding on games, Justin's review feels pretty accurate. Granted, I've only played the demo, but everything I thought and said while playing the demo, Justin confirmed.

Nothing about it interested me. I, unfortunately, am reluctant to play this game as to not ruin my love for the franchise. The guys at Ruffian seem like great people, this isn't a slam on them, but seriously. I feel like there was no real effort put into advancements or innovation.

Having said that, I've only played the demo. I suppose I'll rent it, it's the least I can do. Did I just negate everything I said above?

@(Unverified) More than likely, I will play the shit out of this anyway... I wish there was more than what I'm hearing from this review.

I enjoyed playing that demo three times, so I think I'll probably be fine. The first one was a masterful co-op game, and I'll play this one the same way.

It's really down to this:

NEW ORBS!

@DarkGrimoire Yeah, sucks. I mean, I expected APB to fail (I heard them talking about it a couple of years ago and was just shocked how little a clue they had about the market - they seemed to think all they had to do was ship an MMO and they'd then just rake in the cash), But I thought Crackdown would have some promise, the lead designer certainly seemed to know what he was talking about - shame, especially since this was Ruffians all or nothing endevour, they didn't have any other game in pre production cause they were putting all their eggs in this basket. Hope they survive.

This is damn sad. I loved the first one and my wife even played the heck out of it. I think the franchise has great potential, and I had really high hopes until I heard the "story" of this one. That made me start doubting.

Then, I tried the demo this weekend and was shocked at how much less fun it felt. It just felt uninspired. Now, reading this review I am told that what I played in the demo is essentially the whole game!? WTF is wrong with these guys? C'mon! Stop ruining fun games.

Blam, excellent game idea. Sucks we had to wait 3 years, but I'm bored of all the slow games out there. Reddead is a good game, but GTA with horses is not nearly as good as GTA on crack.

agreed, pick up Just Cause 2... totally worth it. there's a couple free DLC vehicles that are a BLAST (pun intended) to fool around in.

It's the kind of game where you make your own fun, big open sandbox world that's opened up right away, no "broken bridges" or "police blockades" preventing you from exploring the vast island.

it's probably the only game that i actually save videos from and watch again later for the lulz.

I did read.; I ignored the star rating, though, because it's needless and only stirs the pot. Joystiq is stupid for adding that in there. Even if a rating was necessary, a scale of 1 to 5 is rediculous. You can't condense your thoughts into that small of a scale. I like how most reviewers like Game Informer or IGN do it. On those scales, I know a 7 or higher is definitely a game worth reading about. I'll even read those of a 5 or 6.

From reading the review, it sounds to me like the reviewer didn't even seem to care for the original, since, this sounds to be be more of the same in the sequel. That's fine with me, because the first Crackdown was great fun to begin with(especially co-op with friends).

Whookid is right, from reading the review it's pretty clear that Justin did not particularly enjoy the first game. You can tell because the things he complained about in this one are the same things that people who didn't like the first one complained about with it, but which fans of the first game actually loved about it.

No good story style missions or dialogue? Thank goodness, that was one thing I was worried they would ruin from the first game. It's great to have story and objective missions in some games, but this isn't one of them. It's great to be able to just be running around the city screwing around, and happen to come across a guy you need to kill or something and then just do it while you're there. Piling into a vehicle and driving across the city to deliver this guy to some random building would ruin this game. We're not playing this game to get all organized and feel like we're doing some chore, we're playing it to screw around.

I never even touched the mission in the demo until like my 5th playthrough of it (with infinite timer glitch each time). Who jumps into Crackdown and goes and does a mission? No thanks. We spent our time playing barrage chicken on long pipelines, having people punting contests, playing king of the hill with the UV shotgun and ground pounds on the top of the highest building we could find, and telling friends that we'd buy them lunch if they could climb to the top of this particularly tricky building and then blowing them off the side of the building with a rocket when they got close.

I'm glad Ruffian stuck to the roots of the game, and if it's laziness that made them do it then it doesn't bother me, as long as the end result is what it is.

Yes yes and more yes to those against the reviewer. The missing areas of the game are what made the first game so great. No forced story, no sequential order, no reason or motivation to do anything at any pace other than your own. The first game was brilliant for giving me the ability to do whatever the hell I wanted when I wanted. If I wanted to go and kill the Shai Gen crimelord before even stepping foot on Los Meurtos territory, I had that option and ability. Sure, it'd be tough as hell, but I could do such if I wanted to. If I wanted to just jump around for 45 minutes rooftop to rooftop that was an option. Just wanna drive around and flinging cars everywhere with the agency vehicles, no problem. Wanna sit on the freeway and shoot out tires of cars driving by, go to town. It was a good "game", which most games aren't now. Most games now are good "cinematic adventures".

I'll agree, the lack of narrative doesn't hurt Crackdown or the sequel. It's like someone complaining, "Yeah the combat in Counter-strike is tight, but I've got to give it a 1 out of 5 because it's lacking a certain raison d'être."

The last time a dumb fun action game tried to include more of a narrative punch, we got Dom's wife in Gears of War 2. I'll pass.

Most important thing to note from the sequel didn't even get touched in the review: Do the new orbs make Driving worth a damn? It was a massive chore getting my driving skill up to max just to get Master Agent in the last one, it would be nice to know if the trek in this one is worth it or not. I guess Justin didn't bother leveling that one, since the maxed out perk for that, an attack helicopter, would make his issues with the wing suit moot.

@Vcize "Who jumps into Crackdown and goes and does a mission?"

Yep.

Besides, to claim diversity existed in the story missions of the first game is laughable. Granted, you had to do *some* things in order to unlock other portions of Liberty City, but it was still a great big bullet-riddled sandbox the minute you exited the garage for the first time.

Sounds like I (as a huge fan of co op in the original with a friend) could still enjoy this game despite all its flaws. It seems like they mostly wouldn't affect me as I played the original for countless hours by making my own fun.

Very informative review though. I'm glad I know what to expect now.

After just about an hour or so, I realized that you were going to be doing the same 2 or 3 mundane tasks until the cows came home. Just like the first one. Yuck.

If that wasn't bad enough, the lock-on system for aiming is completely useless, and often times will work against you more than aid you. I'd rather be playing GTA3 and its aiming system.

I have no idea why people liked Crackdown 1, but this is the same exact game. Finally, it's getting blasted for being super simple and way too redundant.

Yeah, but Red Dead has a pretty rich story, too. And it's pretty. I'm playing it now, and rather enjoying it because I'm not letting myself get bogged down in the crappy completionist stuff. Crackdown lacks the interesting character design and quality voice acting that makes Rockstar games palatable.

@Wiizer I don't know if this will get downvoted, but I think the reason that Crackdown 1 was so well-received is because it surprised people. The whole "OMG Halo 3 Beta with a free game!" joke, etc etc. I'm sure there were many people that were ready to dismiss the game, bought it because of Halo, played Crackdown, and thought to themselves that it was a pretty fun game. Then it caught on.

Not saying that holds true for every single player, because I rented Crackdown 1 and had a damn good time with it. But as many of the reviews have said, I played the demo for 2 and couldn't help but feel it was the exact same game but with zombies.
