Unencumbered by legacy Xbox support, this year's Xbox 360 Dashboard update promises to be a big one. And while E3 may have been a bust for those of us eager to learn about the bi-annual update, we are getting some information piecemeal, starting with last week's Hulu Plus announcement and now, this week, we have Destination Arcade, a "brand new recommendation engine & visual browser app" coming to Xbox 360s ... next week!
There's not much information on the new browser app, but we do know you'll be able to sort by price and community rating, find out about "the latest arcade releases through a news feed" (sort of like this one!) and, seemingly replacing a piece of pre-New Xbox Experience functionality, the ability recommend games to friends and see which games your friends have recommended. You can find some pics of the new service in the gallery below.
[Thanks, Jason]

@Tiptup300 The source is noted at the bottom. Major Nelson. I think he's pretty legit.

Yeah! Love the HUGE borders all around the screen so that the actual content is tiny! Looks just like PSN now. Maybe they can make the text unreadable just like PSN?

Hope it works out.
XBLA is seriously underrated. I own all the consoles, but XBLA blows PSN and WiiWare(non-VC) out of the water from everything I've seen. they put a good bit of budget in that thing.

one thing i gotta give PSN though. whenever i pick up a new ps3 i can usually go on PSN and find a free theme for whatever game i just picked up. it's nothing big, but i really wish XBL would do that at least once in awhile.

I was hoping that the Arcade thing app that came out would be a hub for Arcade games. But this makes up for it not being. This looks nice. I just hope I don't need to launch this app to play an arcade game.

Naw it just looks like a place you can go to see what your friends like and what the community likes from the Arcade as well as showing you whats new or similar to what you have.
By the way you realise there is a quick menu to bypass all system menus anyway right?

Too bad they could do this for the entire marketplace.

I won't be satisfied until they bring back the ability to actually SORT my own Arcade games by genre. You know, like was available 2-3 years ago?

Sweet. I have relatives that find the navigation for content to be a bit burdensome, so hopefully this will make it more functional and easier.

How about the ability to fully customize your Dashboard, i.e. remove channels and streams you don't want (like the Spotlight) or add your own shortcuts to features you use frequently.

@FlawedLogicXIII
To be fair the spotlight is useful. It tells you about upcoming events and other cool videos to check out.
The ads on the marketplace make sense, because it's a store. OMG, a store having ads, that's ludicrous!
The only thing that shouldn't have ads, doesn't. The My Xbox witch is pretty much the players space doesn't have any ads. Quit complaining.

@FlawedLogicXIII Thank you. People say, "Well they won't do that because they want you to see ads." They can still put ads into the NXE... the Ads are probably the least invasive additions, when Spotlight and X-Box today an all of the other stupid panes are all one giant, dumb advertisement. Most people probably wouldn't re-order or hide a channel, they'd probably just leave it and not care. I don't mind if it's on by default, as long as I have some ability to customize it.

I have to agree with Flawed. I would love a customized Dashboard. And while I think it's stupid that since we pay for Live we have to see ads (except on the stores, that makes sense), I realize Spotlight will probably never go away. I think we should be given the options to take out like My Community & What's New if we so choose. And possibly the Music Marketplace.

That looks much better than the clicky tabs that I have to go through currently. Anyone just getting into the XBLA would have a hard time finding most of the stuff they'd be interested in.

The 'Tweets From Xbox Arcade' could be awesome if it's actually integrated. Tell us about upcoming deals, games etc.
The 'Find Similar Games to ____ ' is an excellent idea.
All in all.. that looks like a great update... Here's hoping there's more to it as well!

Yay more in-your-face marketing!
I can't stand that they feel the need to shove as much content as they can into every page you want to look at. It clutters up the interface *so* much and is not especially helpful (for me at least).
And I still wish we could go back to the original interface. The new ones and all these updates are so lifeless and derivative. I like the updated look of the new xbox, now let's see them come up with an interface that has an equal amount of character.

*I think they also might be changing the Xbox startup icon to the one shown at the start of the E3 conference, but that's just hoping.

THe 360 Dashboard sucks now. It sucked 2 years ago and then the NXE came out, which was trumped as a big upgrade, but few publications and journalists were willing to speak the truth: It sucked. It's unuseable, it's unmodifiable, it sucks.
Two simple changes would make the system infinitely better, they require no design work, no expensive PR firms, no extensive useability testing:
1) The Ability to hide categories/panes/levels in NXE.
2) The ability to hide something from displaying
NXE is incoherent. It forces you to begin on the most useless pane: "X-Box Today" or "Spotlight," I forget which one it is exactly because they are both completely useless and seemingly the exact same thing. You should be able to set which pane you want to begin on... In almost every circumstance, I turn on my 360, then have to go "up" or "down" to find what I'm looking for, which is almost always, without fail, "My X-Box." Because I don't care what stupid ads MS wants to put up on the "X-Box Today" pane, or who the "Gamer Spotlight" is, or any of the stupid shit that every pane and every level and everything on NXE is filled with. Basically, there are two things that matter to me: "My X-Box" and "My Friends," and the five or six other panes aren't something that should be primarily displayed, they should be displayed if I want to look at them... if I WANT to go to "X-Box Today" to see some stupid interview or promotion, then I will. Same thing with Spotlight. Same thing with Community.
And further, what the hell is the difference between any of these? Community, Spotlight, and X-Box Today basically cycle between the same few stories... except some of them display slightly different stories than the others. Just give me the damn option to hide them because I do not care about the Community Play Date for some game that I don't own. Further, Microsoft has all of this money, a huge development team, and they also gather all of the information about the games that I play. Amazon.com realistically predicts what products and services I am interested in, and displays those on my Amazon homepage... Yet I give Amazon a lot less concrete information than I give Microsoft. MS knows exactly what games I play and when, what I'm into, what I do not use, why can't the X-Box Dashboard have some sort of realistic tailoring option for me? Notice how I don't own any of the games for the community playdate, why even show me them?
But, nevermind these paragraphs: 1 change would be a huge improvement: The ability to hide things you don't want to see. That's it. Two buttons ... LB: Hide. RB: Show. And that's it. It starts on "My X-Box" and I am happy. Instead of being on "X-Box Today," the useless pane, and having to cycle up like two or three levels/panes to get to My X-Box just to start a game, or play a demo, etc.
There are scores of other useability problems with NXE... dozens and dozens. It's probably the least useable consumer device UI I've ever really used for an extended period of time, but those two changes would be simple and effective.

@The Albatross Sorry for the long rant that is mostly on a different topic. But, as long as they do useability testing of this new menu, then that's fine.
If also shouldn't be a separate experience from everything else. I don't hate the Zune Marketplace, although I think that I -- and a lot of other people -- are confused by what it is (basically, a video / music rental store... which has almost nothing to do with the actual consumer device, the Zune), but the one thing that I do dislike about the Zune marketplace is that it is a separate experience... it takes you away from the core menus and places you somewhere else, and you an't get back and forth between two Zune menus and two main NXE menus. It's not well thought out.
I am sure that Microsoft is being torn in different directions by all of their constituencies, and I feel for the UI directors who have to put all of these thoughts into one location. It's just easier to say, "we'll put you into the Zune Marketplace" or "We'll link to you on X-Box Today..." and make the UI experience worse for the user than to tell a department or person that their area really isn't important, nobody cares about it, and putting it somewhere high profile would degrade the experience.

I somewhat agree with you, but I think those hurdles are there for a reason. They want you to start on other panes, so you have to browse through to reach what you want. Admit it, something on those panes has at least once caught your eye....and if it catches your attention, there is a remote possibility that you will end up purchasing something related to the ad.
My gripe with the current xbox UI is the slow Guide. This is the menu that we are supposed to use IN GAME, and it is slow as molasses. Playing a multi-player game and trying to check a message is utterly ridiculous. Then there is the whole quick launch debacle, where a simple list of games can take upwards of 30 seconds to appear, at that is using a 20 gig HD.
Oh and PLEASE give us the ability to choose the sorting method when comparing games with friends, the whole idea of comparing games with someone, based on the chronological order that THEY played the games is about the dumbest thing Ive ever seen. Try comparing achievements with someone who has 100k+gamerscore, it will take you 5 minutes just to find the game you are interested in, if you are lucky enough to not skip right past it. Just make it sortable using the Y button: alphabetical, their chronological order, your chronological order, their score, and your score.
