Mark Rein: Epic is committed to PC, also making a game 'for mobile and tablet'
45
Epic vice president Mark Rein talked to Rock, Paper, Shotgun recently and, when confronted with the allegation that the company has abandoned its PC roots, came out shooting. Rein says that a little console success with Gears of War doesn't mean that Epic has moved on from the platform that spawned Unreal and Unreal Tournament. "Don't confuse Gears of War with everything we do," he said. "Bulletstorm is PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, and you'll see when it comes out, it will be a full-blown, oh-my-god amazing PC game."
Of course, Rein admits that the PC isn't all -- in the rest of the interview, he maintains that mobile platforms like Apple's iOS and Android are going to be very important for gaming in the future, and that getting the Unreal engine running on those is a big priority with Epic. While PC is still the foundation, Epic is "going to make a game for mobile and tablet," Rein says. "We haven't announced anything yet, but it's due."

Gears of War is fun and all, but it's a decidedly console experience. It was god awful boring on the PC. I love it on the console because it somehow manages to be the most casual of all Xbox LIVE shooters while presenting this absurdly macho, violent and fanservice filled face. Most certainly a great game, but I'd rather watch paint dry than play it on the PC. There is a reason we have Unreal on the PC and Gears on the console.

My PC cuts through Gears of War like a hot knife on butter, but it is a slow, dull game with a keyboard and mouse. TF2 is about the slowest I'll play for gameplay on the PC. I firmly believe certain games are just better suited for a couch and controller while others are meant for a keyboard/mouse and lots of caffeine. I work on games for a living so I like to have hardware up to snuff for the games that we work on, like Crysis 2 as of recent.

I also disagree with both of you two. Gears PC was an excellent port besides a few bugs. It played faster and looked a lot sharper/more colorful than 360 version. Sure, it lacked dedicated servers but it was and still is a great experience both off & online. Still play it till this day. My three most played games online for PC... Gears, Left 4 Dead 1, & TF2. ;)

Official version of Quake 3 for Android, instead of the port jobs we've seen that requires the actual files?
...Wait, I'm having a dense moment. Was Quake made by Epic?

Oh yeah Mark Rein, we believe you. What a douche. Easily the most hated figurehead in the gaming industry, and for good reason. I'll believe this "committed to PC" nonsense when I see some content/patches/updates for Unreal III. There have been what... 3 total? One that actually added content?

@Loucetios I'd say the maps, hover-boards, and at least 1-2 of the vehicles.
From what I played a lot of it seemed to be lacking color and then the hover-boards to me just kind of seemed out of place.

@tendoboy1984 What I'd give for an Unreal title on the 3DS.
There needs to be SOME company out there that will produce an awesome FPS for the 3DS. I know a lot of them suck, but Metroid Prime Hunters was extremely fun (before every person you faced was a hacker).

Epic - outside of my undying love for Unreal Tournament - is a one trick pony. Their engine however is an empowering tool. I say leave Epic out of the 3DS. I don't want to watch brown on grey with blood red highlights in 3D, it sounds painful just reading it aloud.

Well, Microsoft has a publishing deal with Epic for Gears of War series, so that's why it's a 360 exclusive. I imagine that shadow complex is the same story. Other than those 3 games, UT3 was the last main game they've released this gen, so it's not like they're swaying towards one console vs. another. And bulletstorm is a multiplatform game, so again, i find it hard to believe that they're dedicated to the 360. A nice chunk of their cash flow comes from licensing the unreal engine that work on both consoles.
UT3 for the PS3 was probably more of a proof of concept that their engine was up to speed with Sony's hardware, which is why it rushed out first.

Just out curiosity, why exactly would that be? Mike Capps (a man who causes a PR nightmare every time he opens his mouth) essentially already has and Cliffy B. (being the arrogant prick he is) has damned an entire audience because they happen to be technically proficient enough to build their own systems since they *might* use that technical inclination to pirate. Then again, they're too busy pointing the finger at us (PC gamers) for their lack of support to understand why their company's last two entries didn't perform any where near their expectations (UT3 was inferior in every way outside of visuals compared to UT2k4, GOW PC was a poorly optimized port released 6 months after it hit the 360 with hardly any fanfare outside of the blogosphere while being tied to GFWL when Microsoft expected $50 for online play). Infinity Ward (before Activision eviscerated them) was on a "Screw PC" roll prior to MW2. Microsoft? With the exception of Fable III, they've done everything within their power to keep their published games off the PC and went so far as to shutter Aces as well as Ensemble.
The few people who know me on this site now me as a PC-centric gamer; while I have all three current gen consoles, my gaming rig is by far the most used and has the largest library of any platform in the house. Do you know what "Screw PC" tells me? It tells me that particular developer and/or publisher does not value me as a customer. It tells me that they won't be fully supporting their product after launch beyond DLC, that they won't listen to honest criticisms (whether to improve their upcoming games or to fix technical issues with their current title), and that they'll accept ZERO accountability for any of their mistakes on ANY platform. They then lose me as a customer from that point on. I won't just not be buying their games for my desktop, I won't be buying their games for the other platforms I own.

You know, I hate to address people like you but here it goes. Gears PC wasn't a shoddy port, despite a few bugs(all games have them), it scaled quite well @1200 res. Its actually the best looking game outside of Crysis, in my opinion. Gears PC was not released 6 months but in fact a whole 12 months(a year) after 360 version. Epic did not do the port, it was "People Can Fly" (not bad).
Epic can do what they want as long as we get our favorite games on time and Gears 3 has dedicated servers.

"Gears PC wasn't a shoddy port, despite a few bugs(all games have them)".
I suppose the security certificate expiration that locked legitimate players out of being able to use their software doesn't count as a problem. I suppose extremely inconsistent performance on even enthusiast class hardware (which was, at the time, the Geforce 8800 GTX) isn't a problem and that the massive nosedive the game's performance took when enabling DX10 wasn't a problem either. The keyboard controls were a bit of a mess and the less said of multiplayer the better.
I like Gears. I really do. Having said that, I'm not going to let me affinity for the series blind me to the technical flaws a specific version. I have a certain degree of tolerance for bugs; I thoroughly enjoy Crysis Warhead even though it took Crytek months to release a patch that enabled me to successfully change the game's resolution in the menu when using DX10 rather than resorting to the command line or a config. However, my tolerance ends completely when a flaw interferes with my enjoyment to a degree that I spend more time getting the software I purchased to work the way I want it to instead of actually playing it. If you think I've being overly hard on Epic, you have no idea how much venom I've spat at Rockstar for their GTA IV port.
I digress. Releasing a port with both bugs that were carried over from the console version (day one bugs that were later ironed out on the 360 version, nonetheless) and new CRIPPLING bugs, tying it to an absolutely atrocious matchmaking/DRM solution, and then releasing it with ZERO advertising outside of the blogosphere is not a good way of generating sales. By the time the PC version came out, anyone would wanted to buy Gears already did, played the hell out of it, lost interest in it, and then shelved it in order to move onto other titles. Those who did buy it received a version that, while looking slightly better than it's brother, somehow didn't play anywhere near as well. If you were to pull aside someone in a store and ask them which platform Gears of War came out on, 99% of them will say 360 only.
"Epic can do what they want as long as we get our favorite games on time" They did what they wanted with UT3 and that game sold around 2 million copies across three platforms in two years; doing what you want and doing it extremely well are two completely different things. If Epic had gotten off of its UE3 and GOW high horse and actually listened to what their fans wanted, UT3 online activity wouldn't be a fraction of the size of its predecessor and it might've actually done well.

Mark Rein you're fooling no-one. Committed to PC means designing a game for the PC, not for consoles. Bulletstorm is designed for consoles in mind, and as such with the background of Epic Games' previous multiplatform products, I am almost certain that Bulletstorm will suffer in some way from being on the console. Just like Unreal Tournament did with Unreal Tournament 3.
Don't get me wrong, I still like what you are doing (And will probably check out Bulletstorm), but the possibility that what you are doing could be SO MUCH MORE kills me a little inside. Commit yourself to PC and make that potential happen, then I'll start believing you Mark Rein. Announce PC things like modding and custom multiplayer servers for Bulletstorm (If any are planned). Patch Unreal Tournament 3 so that it can be a better experience for a lot of people (Wild dream indeed). Release Gears of War 2 and 3 on the PC (MS made a deal, but you can still talk to them). ETC. That's committed. The ball is in your court.

Make a new proper Unreal game like the original in your own company and then I'll believe you are "commited". With Gears of War 2 not even getting a PC port and all the other things already mentioned, this is just PR bull.
Which especially PC gamers won't eat up as easily. Not that it really matters I guess.
