Screw you. At least they try to be ambitious and take advantage of the hardware.

Ouch. I've heard some pretty low reviews out there, but this is by far one of the lowest.

From the optimistic reviews I hear: "For $30 this is a so-so brawler to add to your Wii collection. A tad gimmicky in ways that aren't fully explored, but still a good time if you're into cheesy fights."

And the pessimistic ones? ...well, I suppose this review sums all that up.

I dunno, I'll still pick this game up eventually. I'm a lot more forgiving to gimmicky games as long as I can find a charm/fun in it. That, and I have yet to find a site/magazine where I agree with all their reviews.

Oh, and one more thing: Soulcalibur "me too"s appeal to me.
I don't like how Soulcalibur controls - feels too "bleh". I can see where combos can be made and such, but yeah... "bleh".

The copies of Soulcalibur actually feel a lot more at home with me.
...hell, I enjoyed Castlevania Judgement.

So I guess I'll be picking it up sometime soon to see if it plays "bleh"-less. ...after I get Crackdown 2.

I am still waiting on Lucas Arts to come out with a sequel for Gladius. I played the heck out of that game.

Me too! I just fear that I will be waiting until after my great grandchildren are bored with Starcraft 5

DOWN WITH STARS!

In all seriousness though, it's a shame this turned out to be pants. I didn't see much of it before, but I sort of hoped it would be a proper gladitorial arena game.

Now I will never have my vengeance.

I suppose SEGA could be to blame for the change in artistic design, since Gladiator A.D. was first shown without a publisher. It could also explain why Grinder became a multiplatform title (albeit it's a different game on the HD systems).

And this is just opinion, but my interest in the game was also lost the moment it changed into a mythological brawler as well. Oh well, not like it was the only game I had to look forward to.

"If you see a half-star, assume it's between both positions and read the review for further context."

So, hmm, I'll take this to mean it's slightly worse than "No, unless this is your favorite type of game and you're starved for more."

So, I guess something like:

"Should I play it?"

"No, unless this is your favorite genre of all time and you accidentally stepped on all your Soul Calibur discs."

"and all the copies in town"

High Voltage Software made mediocre theme based games (movies and stuff) before they made The Conduit. So... I wouldn't call them a "seasoned developer" because they've never really made anything worth anything.

I see them in need of someone to do quality control and polishing of the game because they have some really good ideas that are horribly executed.

Hey gang, as you can see, I deleted most of the complaining, discussion of our rating system that doesn't directly pertain to ToL. It's just cluttering up the conversations on reviews that are actually related to the game in question. If you have any comments, questions about the ratings system, feel free to email me.

You could definitely see this coming after the change in direction. Though thematically i like the change (since i'm a sucker for crossovers at heart), but generally in gaming development more color tends to come with a decrease in budget and priority

Not unpredictable.

This may get deleted based on Justin's comments, but....

didn't I read that joystiq wasn't going to use half stars? I thought I'd read that.

hrmmm.... maybe I didn't. I don't trust my memory much anymore.

bahhh, nevermind. I'm thinking of something else. The "futurestiq" article does in fact mention half stars.

On topic, that screenshot looks pretty nice for a wii game! Same the game is balls.

I hate to say it, but this doesn't surprise me. After a somewhat promising start, prospects for this game went down drastically and swiftly after the theme change was announced. Maybe someday we'll see Gladiator A.D., but who knows if it will be worth it.
It feels bad to say this about people who are so obviously trying their hardest to please, but I've yet to see any convincing evidence that High Voltage is capable of making a legitimately good game.
