Battlefield: Bad Company 2 deploys 'Map Pack 4'
68
Two "new" maps have been added to Battlefield: Bad Company 2, free to Xbox 360 and PS3 players who bought the game new and registered their VIP codes. PC players will unlock the new maps through an in-game patch. Atacama Desert has been added to Rush Mode, while Conquest mode has seen Port Valdez added to the rotation.
And when will new (no quotation marks) maps drop into the popular first-person shooter? It's looking more and more likely that the recently announced Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam expansion (coming "winter 2010") will be the first add-on to include new terrain.
Check out a video featuring the latest map update after the break.

While at first it does seem kind of lame that they take old maps and add new modes and call it new, when you actually play them they do feel like new maps. My friends for some reason only play conquest mode (I know, I know, they're playing it wrong), so when they add a conquest mode to an old map, it is like a brand new map, at least to us. And they put in a ton of effort converting them from conquest to rush, the maps have to be expanded a ton, and add at least 2 or 3 other areas.

@Bananarama Nope. It's still totally lame. This is more egregious than Modern Warfare 2 repackaging maps from the first MW game. There's really no good way that can be seen.

Yes, because they shouldn't charge for maps that clearly aren't new.

@TonyRockyHorror How can it be more egregious when they are giving it away for free?
And have you actually seen the difference between a conquest map and a rush map? It's pretty huge.

It is free, unless you're buying it used but I can understand why they would introduce the $10 scheme, since they're losing money.
Also since it is free, I can't complain.

@Bananarama i play BC2 every night, so yes, I know the difference, and I still think this is BS calling this a map pack.
at least with MW2, the map packs are putting in content that ARE NOT OTHERWISE IN MW2 already. MW1 and MW2 are different games. i don't care to pay a little extra to get old good maps from a DIFFERENT game in a new game.

@Osnaz I have it on the pc, so yeah, its free. Also if you bought the game new its free. And the first mw2 map pack came out in late march, 4 and a half after the game came out, so 4 months without new maps really isn't a big deal.

While it sucks for second-hand purchasers, I have not minded the way they've rolled out these maps over time at no cost to me. It's kept the game fresher longer because not all of the maps are worn out instantly. I'm sure these maps are harder to make than maps for other games, seeing as how they are way bigger (at least in Rush mode), so I can kind of understand them not making new ones. At least the slow roll out has kept the maps from turning stale without a real addition.
Also, Onslaught is so much fun, especially on Hardcore. I like the Horde/Firefight/etc. mode with objectives and ground to cover, it's a good improvement.

Yes this is all "free" but you're not downloading anything! It's not like they're actually making new maps for you. It's already on your disc. I really wish they would put some effort into making an actual map you have to download. But by the time they do that (looks more and more like Vietnam expansion) they are gonna charge EVERYONE, regardless of VIP status.

@Osnaz Oh shut up already. I've played the BF series for years, from the beginning, and Rush Mode is as worthy of the BF name as Conquest. If anything, the current Conquest Mode we have is less like classic Battlefield than Rush mode is.
I don't know why you bitter gents keep up with this lame argument. "Blarhg! CQ is teh ownlee way 2 play BF rAwRrr!!!1!!"
All that said, I play Rush way more than Conquest. Conquest is boring as hell. On either side of the map each team is simply in a bitchfit with itself over "I GeTz da Choppah iTz MINE, waaahhhh!!!" Nothing happens in the middle of the map except for bush wookiee snipers thinking they're hard, and occasionally the tryhard no-lifes than heli-strafe in a panic circle over the enemy spawn, showing their 1337 skillz.
It'll be a blast playing Rush on Atacama. It's an awesome map--that was ruined by Conquest Mode.

WTF are you spazzing for? The OP said that there was something wrong with playing conquest mode, so I just replied to him. I never said anything about Rush being bad. If anything you should be spazzing on the OP for implying conquest isn't good. Go eat some potatoes and calm your raging hormones.

@Bananarama 100% correct, people try really hard to make it seem as though, lets say laguna persa rush isn't at least 15 times bigger than the largest MW2 map. I can play the same rush map 10 times straight and have a different experience each time. i don't even play conquest at all and the one time i did play laguna conqest, i was like i know this area, i've seen it before, but the action is coming from a totally different angle.
I think DICE did it right, I got a game where the community is always together due to everyone having all maps on all modes, i'm not forced to spend $90 for the full experience, and it's a blast. building a single map so big that you can have 4 variants is a plus in my book anyday.

@(Unverified) Wow someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. Don't get me wrong, I love Rush as much as the next guy but Conquest IS Battlefield. I was incredibly excited when I started playing the first time and realized what Conquest was.

Well, I suppose a little more diversity couldn't hurt.
But still, wish EA didn't have DICE toiling away on both Medal of Honor and the Vietnam expansion. Some new weapons, modes and maps would be a welcome addition.
And at this point, I'm just about ready to pay Activision prices.

@Thorz LOL that happens, man. And welcome to the Battlefield.
I quit playing MW2 in March when BF came out but went back into it recently for a few days and oh my God-- that game is so softcore and cartoonish and lame. It seriously is the "children's shooter."

I know that these listing could change, but if best buy is listing it as a retail item, don't expect it to cost $15-$20

There's no way it's actually gonna cost a full $60 for that much content. EA isn't that dumb. I could see it at $20, maybe $30 although seems pretty steep to me.

I wish it would be $20 too, but who do you think has a better idea of the price? Best Buy, or us uninformed consumers? Also, if it truly was going to be just 4 maps for $15-$20, it would be dlc, not a retail package. Clearly EA is looking to screw over its BF fans.

The listing price on that link is $69.99 which means it costs more than the game does. The 360 version on that site is listed at $59.99. I did a quick search on some of the big retail sites and I didn't find any other listings. At best this is just speculation and I doubt they have any firm details on the pricing yet.

I understand the work that goes into this kind of thing, but I still feel like this should all have been part of the main game at the point it hit retail. Sure, I see how they'd perceive the value as something to push people to buy new instead of used, but still. I've been itching for new environments for a LONG time now. Please get us new maps... my friends have gone back to MW2

On the upside, I've played 0% MP and am frustrated after going back to COD4 over the weekend.

I really love this game but felt like I was playing the sames maps over and over and over again. There isn't enough variety and these "map packs" are not map packs at all but mode packs. Also, the spawn camping was really driving me nuts. Overall it's 1,000 times better than MW2 but needs some small fixes.
