Why would you make an elf rogue?

One of the things that I hated about dragon age is the fact that the beginning stats make dwarves better at being rogues than elves. Better archers, even.

@torgo (loved it overall, though. Just wish they'd done seperate magicky high-elves and archer-y woodelves or something like that.)

Not sayin your play style is wrong or anything, but some people do just play characters that they want to play, and not only the "best" setups. I started with an elf rouge to, because I wanted to play an elf who was a rouge. That character still made it through the game. Different strokes for different folks...

@swooded Sure, you CAN still play an elf rogue, but to my way of thinking, an elf should be GOOD at it too. They're supposed to be nimble folk, but in this game they're actually the slowest and clumsiest race.

It's like if you played a star trek game and vulcans were the worst scientists, with klingons laughing at their meager intellect. The game might still rock, but that one thing would never sit right.

Uhhhhhh... you're kinda forgetting that star trek is one specific property with defined species, whereas with elves and dwarves anything goes. When it comes to mythical creatures there's no set values. I've seen elves shown as sprightly tricksters and reserved mystics.

@Acosta02 Yeah, and elves that hole up in trees and bake cookies.

Don't you think these are supposed to be tolkien elves, though?

The hierarchy of these elves seems to be

tolkien -> gygax (bioware peeps even worked on D&D games) -> dragon age.

Also, there's the fact that the dalish elves are depicted IN THIS GAME as favoring bows and hunting over magic. Why, when they suck so bad at it?

Remember when big name games used to be revealed by the developers, instead of magazine leaks? I miss those days.

What do you mean "the old days"? Up until about 8 years ago, all the major games were revealed by magazines, not by the developer though a website press release. This IS old-school.

I skipped Dragon Age origins because of my shameful backlog means I limit the amount to 40 hour plus RPGs in my life. I intend to play 2 so I'm kind of glad that there is not a strong link to the first game.

I really must get to Portal *Dies of embarrassment*

I'm in your boat. I never played the first one, and avoided picking it up because I heard it was so insanely long. Now I'm kind of disappointed that they've already announced a sequel. Is it just me, or are franchises that are CONSTANTLY having sequels and new content added more intimidating to try and get into on the ground level?

Dragon Age: Origins just came out last year, so isn't it a little premature to be revealing details about the sequel? It's not that I have a problem with more Dragon Age; I was just hoping that the announcement would be something a little more ... surprising. Like, you know, an announcement for Jade Empire 2. You remember Jade Empire, right BioWare? That game you released all the way back in 2005 for the original Xbox? That game that I've been waiting for a sequel to ever since? No ... ?

While I dislike seeing sequels for franchises announced so soon after their prior entries, the development cycle here really isn't all that unusual. These days the average dev cycle for a big-budget title is about 2 years, so it makes sense for the game to come out one year, then announce the sequel the next year, and then have the sequel actually come out the next year after that.

That said, as I was saying above, all these franchises that are constantly getting sequels can be really intimidating for someone who wants to try them but doesn't want to make a big time or money investment. Personally, I rarely buy games soon after they come out - I usually wait a few months for the price to drop. When a sequel is announced before the original game has even gone down in price, it puts me at a dilemma: I want to try the game, but I don't want to be playing the "outdated" version, and I also don't want to pay $60 for something that I'm not absolutely, 100% positive I'm going to like (and even then $60 might not be something I can spare). So I end up just not getting any of the games, because I figure whatever I do I'm missing out on something, and at any rate I don't want to get into a series where I'll be pressured to constantly buy new games just to stay current.

Keep in mind that Game Informer pays to get exclusive reveals way ahead of when they actually come out. For example, their Borderlands cover issue was the September '07 issue, and that game didn't come out until October '09.

I would at elast try it IF...they rebalanced the power sets and abilties those felt wonky, 2nd classes need a overhaul AN OVERHAUL! and enhancement should be able to have runes with any attribute/ability thats in the game instead of like 15% of them.....

Also would be nice if the games AI script commands did what they were suppose to all the time.....

This game sounds epic. However, this "new visual style" better not mean they cheaped out on good graphics and gave us something similar to Dragon Age: Journeys. That would...suck.

Also, is anyone not slightly worried about the incredibly fast turnaround on this game? DA:O was released in late 2009, and this game is set for a release in early 2011. That's not a lot of time to develop a whole new game, is it?

I don't know where you're getting that set to release date from. The only one that seems to have a release date is GameStop, and they're notorious for putting release dates that are years too early (and for games that never actually exist). Also remember that the game was RELEASED in November 2009. That means the game went gold in October 2009, so we've had a full year of development.

Further, game development isn't like it was done long ago where the game had only one development team. BioWare probably has a team devoted to just making engines, leaving the actual DA2 team working on the important stuff like mechanics, story, and level design. With a proper department setup, high quality games can be cranked out in two years.

Totally.
I am excited by this news but at the same time worried.
Did anyone else get the feel that Dragon Age: Awakenings was rushed?

I enjoy Bioware games overall but there is this nagging feeling that their quality has been dropping. Not a whole lot but it is still dropping nonetheless.

BioWare itself teased 2/11/2011 as the release date, and I wouldn't be surprised if that is it, regardless of GameStop's credibility issues. But, while I have faith that BioWare can deliver a great experience, I am slightly reserved at the moment, particularly about the new visual style they are teasing.

Also, IGN confirmed via the press release that the game is shipping March 2011. They also seemed to confirm that the game is going the Mass Effect route in terms of the main character being a pre-determined person (called "Hawke" in DA2) who's story and decisions are crafted by the gamer. Very interesting, so far.

I need to seriously know why there isn't coop? Don't bash me cause I'm not a real RPG player but I did play Origins and it was fun as hell.

I'd love to invite my friend and his character in my world.... I could easily see it being able to work over Live with at least 1 other player.
