What I played of the demo was dreadful. Maybe they can fix it, but most likely people will have moved on to another game by then. You can't release a bad game and then promise to fix it later.

Need I remind you how unplayable WoW was at launch? Bugs out the wazoo, servers crashed more than they didn't crash, there was never enough space for anyone to play, the queues were awful.

And I say this all, having been there, I say this, having devoted a year's worth of hours into the game (A year's worth of hours, not playing the game for a year, but having put as many hours into it, as there are hours in a year).

WoW started off the same as APB, and WoW's the pinnacle of MMO's now.

Is the 50 hours of PLAYTIME, or 50 hours after registering, etc.?

so if you buy it, and in the first two days play it for only 15 hrs.. will you have 35 hrs left or only 2?

@Faenix 50 hours of total play time available. It's when you log on into an action district that these 50 hours count down. Leave the action district or quit the game and the count down stops, and starts again the next time you get in.

As for the game, I thought of it probably a little higher, maybe because I really liked the customization aspect. But the rest, EEEEHHHHH.

@Faenix It sounds like 50 hours of playtime to me. 50 hours after registering would be a silly thing to do.

"Notice: Your Steam purchase includes 50 hours of Action District gameplay and unlimited Social District gameplay. Also includes 100 RTW Points. Additional time purchase required after promotional time expires. See below for details."

Anyone know when that promotion is over, wondering how long I got to scrape together 50 extra dollars.

@Faenix The promotional time is your 50 hours. Once the 50 hours has expired you can either buy 20 more hours with RTW points or buy a 30 day unlimited access time where time does expire even if you're not playing.

You had a one in five chance of getting it right. And if you were reading along with the reviews, probably more like a one in three chance. Not exactly like winning the lottery.

Still fair play, you did call it

@DeeZeee You did say 2/5 yesterday, though I'd like to think that's partly because my review was cohesive enough that all of it pointed to the same score.

Anyway, we're wondering what you all thought of this review format. Obviously the score isn't as important as providing some insight and serious criticism of the game. What did you all think?

@Mike Schramm Yeah, I knew by the reading the first two parts of your review it would score low. Also all the other reviews were really low...

I liked how you give an nice in-depth review. Even though I was one of the people moaning. It's great that you tried to give this game a a fair chance. I always enjoy the reviews on this site. Although, I'm still not crazy about the stars like must people, they give me the urge to go to the bottom of the page without reading the review.

@Mike Schramm "[W]e're wondering what you all thought of this review format."

It was an egregious example of pageviewing whoring. APB was never considered to be the second coming of MMOs, and no one considered its release an 'event,' but Joystiq treated it as such with this silly "review diary." Other reviewers had no difficulty encapsulating their thoughts into one page and fewer words, effectively managing to convey APB's 2-star-ness. Save the gimmicks for your giveaways and dry cereal breakfasts and such.

Joystiq's never done an mmo review to my knowledge; what's wrong with doing it in their own style?

Troll? APB IS considered an important thing in mmo's. I was very excited about it. Also I didn't get the impression from the review that it was awful. Just that it had a lot of potential that it hasn't lived up to but possibly still could. A very positive, negative review if you get my drift.

Plus MMO's are structured completely differently to other games and so need to be reviewed differently. I didn't see it as 'whoring' at all.

Plus why are they not allowed to want to get hits? That's how they make their living. It's like calling a baker a whore for selling bread.

@Jack Tretton Some of your feedback is valid, though I will state *categorically* that we did not do this just to span multiple pages for more pageviews. The idea was that we'd get a better feel of what an MMO is like by experiencing it over a full week rather than just a one-shot post. It's my fault that the review wasn't more experiential over time.

But no, I can guarantee this wasn't for pageviews. This isn't the kind of post that draws huge numbers anyway.

It's still a good review. Hopefully this game will change. I thought it was good, probably 7 out of 10 but your review focuses on the flaws. Not a bad thing, just focused on a lot of flaws

Long review is great - have to admit, I didn't read all the parts, but I surely would have if I'd been in the market for the game.

Long or not, I think it would be better if all the parts were released at once. (Preferably on a single page, but I really don't mind if it's on four pages - just, all at the same time.) As it is I read part 1 and skipped to the star rating in part 4 just now and that's it. I didn't bother reading the rest. If it'd all been available at once I would probably have at least skim-read the whole thing. (Despite not intending to buy the game.)

Basically if it takes you four days to write an extended review, that's great! but please just give us the whole review, on day four, not an 'episodic' review.

I was following your review not because I was considering buying the game (I really don't have time for an MMO these days) but because RTW is a local company and I'm considering doing a Summer placement there next year, so I'm interested in their success. So I'm certainly not the average reader, and my opinion might not mean as much, but I appreciated everything about the format of this review. The separation of categories was nice, and I applaud the fact that the last page focused on future potential and RTW's commitment to the title, as that's a very important note to end on. I also liked the daily release schedule, it kept me reading with focused, bite-sized articles. I think that this is a very good format for reviewing MMO's, and would be interested to see more of this kind of review in the future.

I'd love to give this a try, but I hate the thought of having to drop $50 just to try it and possibly not like it.

I'll wait for a 7 or 14 day free trial ... or in this case an 8 hour or 12 hour free trial.

I guess the question is, when has a MMO that's launched to reviews this terrible actually had the time to carve out what's necessary to make it compelling? As I understand it, APB has been in development for a long time. If re-tuning & adding features takes 3-6 months before the game's genuinely fun in a self-contained actual-not-potential sort of way, how many people will still care?

Given that, it seems really strange to me to end the review with a "Well, it sort of sucks now, but might be worth it in the future..." If a reviewer's supposed to put the quality of a game in *context*, it seems to make more sense to say, "Well, it sort of sucks now, and as a result, isn't likely to ever build up a fanbase that will support the game to the point where it's actually fun. Better luck next time," no?

2/5 seems perfect for where the game is now. Maybe since I bought it I want to say 3 though. That said some patches could easily turn the game into a 4/5 or better.

Shame to see a game with so much potential gradually degrade over time. When I first heard about it two years ago it sounded perfect, but since then with the stupid subscription model, adverts, basic gameplay etc... It's just a shame D:

"You can't review an MMO in one week! You don't have enough time to get into the game and learn it's nuances."

"Ok, we will spread the review out for days at a time."

"...but what if our game is bad to begin with?"

"Bingo. So, you still want to do this the "fair" way?"

Couple of things I don't agree with in this review.

The VOIP ads were a last minute announcement that kinda sucks, but they haven't started yet. I haven't heard a single one. When they do start, they are supposed to be heard once when you first enter a district and then only once every 5 hours.

The guns feel very different from eachother. I find myself changing which weapon I use fairly often, depending on the situation I find myself in. Do you want to destroy a vehicle? Go for the big ass machine gun. Do you want to pick at enemies from a distance? Grab the sniper rifle. Do you want to chew up enemies close up? Grab to OCA or one of the shotties.

You already have designers that are getting action time for free because they can sell their stuff for RTW points. You can spend RTW points to either grab 20 hour increments of action time at about $6 or just pay $10 a month for unlimited action district time.

The game is fun though. Chasing people on foot or in vehicles through the city is fun. Witnessing a criminal mug someone or break a store window to rob it and then chasing them down is pretty damn fun. Playing a criminal and having to escape the enforcers after they spotted you doing something is fun too.

Now it isn't perfect and I would love to see a few things change, but this is easily one of the better new MMOs out there and it is definitely something different.
