Team Fortress 2 Engineer update now available
37
Following its various stages of development, the Team Fortress 2 Engineer update is complete and its final addition has been revealed: The Gunslinger. It's a glove that gives the Engineer +25 extra health, a new combo attack and the ability to drop a mini-sentry, which Engies can build much faster than normal sentries, and for less metal. The update will automatically be applied the next time you boot up the game.
Aside from all of the Engineer upgrades, there are also three new maps to wage war on: Thunder Mountain, Hightower and Upward. Now go, go kill all of those evil [insert enemy team color here]s!

Not exactly lvl 4 sentry gun I was hoping for, but this is pretty cool too!

@Heck Guy 4th level Sentry Gun would be seriously overpowered. The current level 3 sentries are able to make you skyrocket the other direction as soon as you get close, making them hard enough to destroy already. And with the remote-control thingy for sentries, they get a 75% damage reducing shield and manual targeting, I think they'll be enough of a challenge.

Okay Valve, so do you have enough content to release Xbox 360 DLC NOW?!

Valve is done with 360, so far as this game is concerned. I'm holding out hope that, with Steamworks integration on PS3, we'll get a re-release there in the form of a downloadable title. I don't think they can do much with the Orange Box version that was released previously, but with an updated Source Engine for the PS3, maybe they'll release it again?!
I'd gladly pay $20 for TF2 on the PS3, with full Steamworks integration and free DLC. Gladly.

They're not going to. They want it to be free, but Microsoft wants them to charge for the content (so they get royalty fees). So they're been trying to figure out a way to release chunks at a time for a reasonable price.
Also, when the game was "fairly" new, there weren't that many people playing online. Is this game still alive on Xbox?
Also, yet more proof of the decline of PC gaming.

Valve has stated that the updates won't work on any console because there's not enough RAM to store everything during the game.

I thought they fixed that issue a while ago.
They've been saying they'll try to get the 360 update out once the Engie update releases, so we might at least have a chance now. I don't have much hope at this point, but just maybe...

@TheGrandHero Not entirely sure that was ever an issue. Doesn't sound likely in any case.
@Themoreyouknow The online community for this game has shrunk considerably. Valve was apparently robbed of the ability to cultivate a community out of it by Microsoft's meddlings. I've read in interviews that Valve regretted using the Xbox Live system to host the game rather than their own since Microsoft had their grimy hands in everything. Also, the Ranked matches are non-existent because you can't join a game after it started. There are plenty of player matches though.
The fact that Microsoft wants to charge for DLC hasn't deterred Valve. They said they were simply going to wait until they felt like they had enough content to make it worth the cost. As far as I can tell the nonsense about the Xbox 360 hardware being incapable of running the update is a rumor, I haven't seen anything from Valve about that.
At this point I fear the Xbox 360 community is too small to support, but isn't going to grow without that support. So it will probably just die out. That's the thing about console games that publishers like Activision love--they die out after a year so you have to go by the next marginally improved COD sequel to continue playing. That's why the borked the PC MW2, for example.

I don't believe that for a second. If they really wanted to release content for free, they would just patch it in like Criterion did for "Burnout Paradise". Either they're using that as an excuse, or they do want some money for it, just they don't want to seem money-hungry.

And a few other things that weren't announced on the blog, too. The big one (I think) being that engies can pick up and move their buildings now.

Yeah the guy above me is right. It will build up to level 3 when it's done.

NOT A GLOVE.
That, sirs, if a robotic hand. A hand that the Engineer wanted to use to the point that he CUT OF HIS OWN HAND TO INSTALL IT ON THE STUMP.
At least now there's an aesthetic purpose for that singular glove.

Man, it's changed so much since I used to play on 360 a long time ago.
So complicated now!
I always loved the Engineer, though. I loved teaming up with a few other engineers and filling the room with sentries, turtling up. I'm sure people hated us...

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze You will LOVE this update then - was playing last night, teamed-up engineers are freakishly powerful.
One engineer uses the wrangler to control the sentry (effectively triples the HP of the gun, and fires twice as fast, but you must manually target) while another one refuels the gun. Epic.

Is it multiple mini sentries or just a single mini sentry that takes basically no time to build? (guessing that along with the shotgun that gives crits for kills/assists/sentry distruction means combat enginners a go go!!)
Posted: Jul 9th 2010 11:23AM Cheesus Crust said
@Milky1985 Yeah just one. I played yesterday and it was so much fun. Just put up a ninja sentry somewhere and BAM, 2-3 Kills, then 4-6 crits with the shotty = best offensive engineer update ever.

Got every single item. That's a new record for me. All the items within about 5 hours of the release.
If you have any questions about the items let me know!

I thought that the turret update would nerf them to permanent Lv1 turrets in exchange for being able to create 3 at a time. That's what I really wanted, but all the above will suffice just fine.
The Engineer comic they release was pretty funny.
