If we didn't know better, we'd say Ubisoft's UK marketing chief, Murray Pannell, has money riding on the success of 3D televisions. Speaking to Eurogamer, Pannell said that adoption of the technology will "start out slowly this year," then boldly claimed that he "wouldn't rule out the fact that this will be installed in everyone's living room in three years' time."
Pannell's crystal ball may be in HD (and 3D!) but only seems capable of looking into the future. If it could see the past, he'd know that the first consumer HDTVs hit the market 12 years ago in 1998, and that, according to an NPD report from May of this year, the technology has only managed to make its way into 64 percent of US homes in that time.
Of course, Ubisoft is a true believer in 3D TV, having released Avatar: The Game before 3D sets were widely available to the public, and is positioning itself as a major player in the space -- so while it's in the company's best interest for the fledgling technology to succeed, it might want to keep its predictions somewhere remotely near the realm of probability.

No chance in hell is this happening. I may be wrong about 3D being a fad. Every time I think it's a fad, I find myself again surprised by the recent staying-power of 3D movies at the cinema, and I'm pretty sure I just read an article about 3D home sales being pretty strong so far this year. -BUT- I still don't think it's every going to be more than a niche market for home viewership.
I have to think that with about 1/4 of the movies being in 3D anymore, people will get tired of paying more to see crap movies (which will hurt 3D). Also, many people are very new to HD itself. They're not going to go out and buy a new TV anytime soon. We just bought 2 new HDTV's, a 32" Panny LCD from Costco and a 58" Sammy Plasma from Scum's Club. The first was an open box and was $200 + tax. The second was $1090 + tax. Two excellent deals on two great sets. The smaller TV is only 720p, but 's gorgeous.
I just checked the price of the Sammy 58" 3D Plasma on Amazon. It's 2,018. That's not outrageous, but you still have to buy the stupid glasses. Who wants to shell out big $$ for glasses? Who wants to sit around wearing glasses when they're watching TV?
Fail Ubisoft. Fail.

You can find 3D DLP tv's for under $2000. A freakin' deal last week netted you 73" for $1050.. Add a $400 kit that includes everything you need for 3D (minus the source, aka PS3, BluRay).
Yep, I can't hang a DLP from the wall but you can't buy an LCD/Plasma this big either.
The glasses aren't nearly as bad as people think they are. New digital 3d (stereoscopic) glasses are pretty comfy and light as hell.
This isn't your grandaddy's 3D..

Strange how marketing people are always so out of touch with the real world.

Does Ubisoft also see themselves paying for a 3dTV in my house?

You don't HAVE to go out and buy a new TV.. some DLP from 2008+ are already 3D ready and require an adapter and glasses.
my 73" DLP from 2009 does Stereoscopic 3D. It rocks.. Been playing the PS3 3D "launch" games for the past few weeks.
3D is here. Like it or not. ;)
